The sensation was palpable, it screamed through every neuron, nerve, muscle, artery, vein, capillary, fibre and follicle of Dan like lightning filling his gut with dread and horror. In an instant, Dan saw the first extinction event on Earth. The world wreathed in fire and ash, no oxygen to sustain life in the air. As quickly as the sensation began it disappeared.
Higgs replied, standing slowly as he spoke, "Save my world from the beached things, end the suffering and the pain. Stop the screaming in my head. Free the ones trapped by the other side." His hands darted out taking Dan by the shoulders. "It makes me what I was meant to be." Higgs' eyes are wide, crazed, desperate and hungry. His face is caught in a rictus grin, the tears of tar flowing from his tearducts. "Haven't you wondered why my name is Higgs?"
