Steve isn’t sure what woke him, but it was sudden and jarring and left an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. He doesn’t open his eyes right away though, using his other senses to take in the world around him and try to figure out what’s going on. He notices first that he’s alone. Not totally, there’s another heartbeat somewhere nearby, but Bucky isn’t in the bed with him. Neither is Peggy. The bed is familiar but he can’t place it right away. His kids aren’t there.
That’s what makes his eyes finally open, taking in the world around him. It only takes half of a moment to confirm what he’d already been thinking. The Island.
But it’s wrong. Things are too quiet and something in his gut feels...off. And why would he be here (almost) alone? He steps out of the bed and then out of the master bedroom. He’s only wearing his cotton pajama bottoms but he doesn’t bother with a shirt or slippers, even if something tells him the earlier would be waiting in the familiar chest of drawers just next to the door he steps out and the latter tucked at the foot of the bed.
“Hello?” He calls out into the quiet early morning still of the house. “Can anyone hear me?” he knows someone is there but doesn’t know who. Doesn’t know if they’re just as confused as he is or the reason he’s there in the first place. His stance is guarded but he doesn’t grab for anything that might be a weapon. Not yet at least.
