John wasn't entirely sure why she felt the need to reminisce. At least he didn't understand at first. Perhaps Scarlet's childbirth reminded her of her own? And how she had survived where Scarlet had not. Not that John knew she wasn't gone. As far as he knew she was dead, lost in her strange child labour. John knew what it was like to be raised without a Mother. To know that she had died in child birth. He had been reminded often enough by his Father. It was a shame he didn't know the truth of it.
"Well, here's a toast to Magnus, eh?" he said, holding the glass out to her. "And to all those we loved and lost" he added. Not that he was one for sentiment but he didn't know what else to say. It was that or crack a joke or say something rude.
