John liked to give people the impression that he was an arsehole. It made it easier to push people away. To get them to stay clear of him. And by doing so, they would hopefully live longer lives. Being around the Liverpudlian was a death sentence, at least in his mind. And while she fought her own battles and survived, losing others in the process, in John's mind it wasn't exactly the same.
