Dan hung back. He couldn't help it. Up ahead was where he'd been thrown through a window and he really didn't want to relive that in any way. But if he wanted to remember what had happened, then he had to.
He'd been arguing with himself the whole way down, quieter than usual as he went through things in his head. He didn't want to see where he'd been hurt, but if he did that, was he giving this one place too much power and he'd never come back again? But that was stupid, right? It was just a place. Then again, if anyone knew how powerful places could be, it was him. The Overlook was long gone, 36 years now, and it still kept dragging him back. But this was different, this was just a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And anyway, worse things had happened on the station, he told himself. His thoughts had whirled round in circles since he'd left the apartment with Abra and his dad, and he had no idea what they'd talked about, or even if they'd talked about anything at all. He'd replied to things with a low "mm," or a head-shake, but he couldn't have said what he'd said yes or no to.
So now he stood, looking at a handful of his posters that had been left sitting on a display shelf. There was something filled with rolled-up blankets over there that made him think about Abra. A load of knocked-over cups or glasses or something that he wanted to avoid, and another display case that had had everything on it knocked over or shoved back onto it. And then there was where the broken window had been, that looked out over the walkway. He didn't want to go near it, didn't want to see the dent in the floor he knew was there despite not remembering any of this.
He rubbed at his lips for a few moments, and then walked over to pick up his posters.
