Miguel crouched down so that Darcy didn't have to look up to talk to him, and watched him for a brief moment. "I'll start at the basics and go from there. I don't think you're stupid, I just don't know what you've been taught, and knowing the facts is always useful. So, pregnancy occurs when a male's sperm and a female's egg fuse to form a zygote, which then has to implant itself into the female's womb lining. The female is then pregnant, and the zygote is now an embryo. If the zygote doesn't implant, then the womb just sheds its lining and starts getting ready for the next period of ovulation. For humans, if the zygote does implant, the next ten weeks are crazy, so much cell division and growth and cells deciding which part of the body they are, and then it's a fetus and for the next twenty-eight to thirty weeks, it grows and grows and at the end, you have a baby. It sounds easy, but it's not."
He spoke matter-of-factly as he went on to explain some of the things that would stop people from getting pregnant, mainly because he knew what he was talking about, but also because he was pretty certain that if he spoke any other way, Darcy might crack. List facts, talk like a lecturer.
"The implants work by stopping the zygote forming or implanting in the womb's lining. In a female, they trick the body into thinking it's already pregnant, so new eggs aren't released from the ovaries or the zygote can't implant itself. In a male, they inhibit the production of sperm, or weaken the sperm so that they either aren't strong enough to reach the egg in the first place, or there just aren't enough of them. Implants are temporary and can be removed quickly and easily, and full fertility is often restored within hours. Everyone involved can continue to have sex at all times. As for your family genetics, I can have a look and see if you want. And if there is a problem, I can probably help with that as well."
