Darcy had been doing the usual rounds. Mornings were actually fairly busy for him. They'd never been particularly quiet, but with Rochester's arrival they were fuller than ever.
As usual when Ashley wasn't rushing off to work, they'd had breakfast together. Ashley had made a little extra, and so after he was dressed he took it across the way to reheat for Rochester. He laid out clothes for him, too. He'd made him tea and once he was sure everything he needed was explained and within easy reach he'd gone to take Bingley for a walk. On their way, he'd checked in on Annie and let her out to stretch her legs. He hadn't been riding much at all since the accident, but he wanted to make sure she still got enough exercise o her own to keep fit and healthy.
On his way back, he'd dropped in on Rochester again. The gentleman was usually able to manage the basics of his clothes, but things like cuffs and collars and shoelaces were impossible. He made a mental note to ask if anyone was particularly skilled with alterations, if there might be a way to make it easier for him.
He had no idea what Ashley had been up to in the meantime. He'd opened the door to their apartment with one hand, Rochester's empty dishes in the other, and Bingley rushed in ahead of him. He didn't know what her question was in relation to at first.
"Everything alright?" he asked, nudging the door closed behind him again.
