"Exactly, yeah. People can believe whatever they want," he said, then sat up straighter to lift the napkin with a little smile of thanks. He set the napkin on the table once he'd put the ashes onto it, and then put the beer bottle in the middle of the napkin. And then he moved it out of the way when Azzie appeared, just in case the cat was dumb enough to try and eat cigarette ash.
"Rae-Rae, meet Azzie. Azzie, this is Rae-Rae. Say hi."
The cat purred and rubbed against Rae-Rae's hand before giving it a good sniff. Then he just lay down in the middle of the table, curling up into a neat circle. "Great," Dan said, although his smile proved that he wasn't nearly as annoyed as he sounded. "Now I'll have to clean this table properly or Lacey and Isabel won't feed me."
