Building a farm all new from scratch hadn't been as difficult as it had been on the island. There she was at the mercy of the elements and the seasons, and night and day. Here she wasn't, she could literally work whenever she wanted too. Especially whenever the Sully kid had made a translator and she actually understood the computers and stuff she could change the different areas of the dome to suit her, and the plants, needs. What had been difficult was building a barn for all the farm animals that had shown up. But she had managed with the first door to earth. She bartered and sold what she could to get enough wood to build a few decent sized barns, both here and in the other wheels, just in case animals there needed a place to sleep. The only ones she didn't bother with was wheel five, because it wasn't quite livable yet, and wheel one, because Loki and Katherine could handle their own. And the really hard part was doing it on her own. It was lonely work. Lonely work made even lonelier by the disappearance of her only son. And that's where she was, day's work done, and she didn't want to go home to a slightly emptier home. It was hard to believe one person could add so much presence. She sat in the dirt, on the edge of one of the planted fields, haphazardly dressed in a tanktop and her overalls. Hat pulled over messy hair. Feet bare because she had been a horse not even an hour ago, and saw little need for shoes. One stalk of wheat between her teeth as she lightly chewed it. The wheat wasn't quite ready to be harvested. |
