When things went well on the island, Sookie would have supported her mother in working in her workshop and everything else she wanted to do while pregnant. This place was different - too dangerous for a woman carrying multiples and no doctors or healers just a phone call away. She hadn't told her mom or her dad yet, but she given up the idea of ever having a family of her own, wouldn't risk a pregnancy. She was even starting to think that she'd wait to bond with her siblings when they were born, to see if they'd make it.
"I want to do all I can. I mean it." Anything less, and she'd feel like a failure. It already seemed like a let down when she couldn't keep up with her father and other strong workers. "Keeping busy keeps me from worrying or feeling bad." It didn't, but she was becoming a more skilled liar, she couldn't let her parents or sisters see her despair.
