The sounds had stopped. The gunfire and the mortars. Everything was quiet. He'd had his eyes closed for a while, hidden in the trench. He wasn't asleep, just needed a moment. As soon as the sounds stopped, his eyes came open. He was in the middle of a city. A moment ago he'd been in a trench and now he was in a city. It was very strange. He was the only one there. He was sure he recognized some of the buildings, but he couldn't quite figure it out. He'd kept the voices blocked during the war. He didn't need to hear the last thoughts of the dying soldiers around him. Didn't need to feel their fear as well as his own. Now that he was alone, and dirty, and cold, he closed his eyes and listened. It was familiar, but there was a hint of fear behind everything. Something had changed. He removed his helmet as he started walking around, trying to remind himself where he was. |
