Summer couldn't help the little, amused smile that spread across her lips as she replied, "No. Not fleeing." She didn't think she'd ever said the word 'fleeing' out loud in her life before. It was the kind of thing she'd read in books when she'd been younger.
Glad to see that the stick had finally been lowered, Summer's stance relaxed. She knew that, most of the month, she was almost as vulnerable as a regular human, with only the benefit of being stronger and more agile, but the pack had taught her to defend herself well enough that she wasn't an easy opponent in a fight. She didn't like violence, though. She firmly believed that everyone should just suck up their differences and get along. Among the werewolf community, who were known for their fiery tempers, she was quite unique in that respect. Still, she was glad the little man didn't seem to be wanting to beat her with the tree branch any more. She had no idea how to start defending herself against an angry midget with a stick.
Summer shrugged. "There are all kinds of people in the city," she said simply. "And not all of them are human." She didn't mention that she, in fact, wasn't human, but she was just one of many that weren't. She might look like a regular, teenage, human girl but that didn't mean she was one. She guessed this little, hairy man might stand out quite a bit, though, even in the mishmash of people that made up the island community.
Slowly, Summer's eyebrows raised as it dawned on her that she recognised the man's name. It took her a moment or two to place it but when she did she gave a little squeal of delight. "Seriously?" she asked, clapping her cold hands together in front of her. "The dwarf?" She'd read Tolkien when she was still in Junior High, when the rest of the girls in her year were more interested in the latest issue of Cosmo Girl, and Thorin Oakenshield had always been one of her favourite characters in The Hobbit. It had been weird enough to make friends with Sirius Black and Remus Lupin from Harry Potter but the Tolkien books were freaking legendary, and here she was, talking to a character from one of them. It was all she could do to contain her excitement. She guessed it did explain why the man was about a foot shorter than her though.
