They've been here a number of days now; here being wherever they are. In the 'city'. Where the human dwellings are made of intricately carved stone, smooth and huge like mountains but full of layers where the humans live.
He and Thorin are sheltered in the empty space within one of the lower dwellings, only a single story, along a row of lower dwellings. Like Hobbit holes, almost. But not quite. This is certainly not the Shire.
Neither of them have been going out in the daytime. Neither of them have been out when the city is buzzing with the humans. They have to return to the woods, that is the plan, as kind as Samir Marcus has been to them, setting them up with these lodgings, but Thorin is on edge and Fíli hates that. They can't go without supplies and they can't go without Thorin being able to defend himself. Which he can't for the moment. And Fíli doesn't know what to feed him here. Or how to treat him.
He leaves their temporary lodgings as the sun rises. Because the humans here don't tend to get up with the dawn. They have the torches that burn all day and night in their homes and streets so they can wait. They aren't at the whims of nature.
But Fíli leaves their lodgings with the first rays to find more food. They have a reasonable supply but it's not really sufficient to both feed them now and supply them as they seek somewhere else to live. He has one of his blades with him, drawn even as he walks down the silent roads towards where the food is kept. It's too easy, he thinks. It's too easy to just walk in and pick up food. Nothing stops him, no one guards it, and it puts him on edge more than it would if it were being defended.
The skins of some of the food confuse him, so he opts for the ones that are as skinned as possible. The texture of their coverings are different and he doesn't want to take them back. Other things are in capsules, others have armour around them, and Fíli finds the human's setting such challenges for themselves to simply eat rather perplexing. But then perhaps that stops other people eating their food- It is perhaps a cunning ploy, but he would like to know what a 'spaghetti hoops' tastes like. Just out of curiosity.
