"Oh, it's all about that stupid auction," Peter said, sitting up and pushing his glass away from him. It wasn't doing any good, and it tasted terrible. "I signed up because it was for charity. I wasn't seeing anyone at the time, you know, so it didn't really matter. So this girl buys me, and I'm just a little nervous because I don't know what's expected. And I have a girlfriend now that I'm crazy about."
He shook his head, looking for a moment at his phone, as if thinking of messaging Lucy. But he changed his mind.
"And, well, anyway, she got it in her head that I didn't want to go out with her. Which wasn't true. I didn't want to go out with her as a girlfriend, no. But I would have enjoyed going out, making new friends, having dinner...you know. Friends. But she just kind of freaked out at me about it. So...yeah. That's been my night. And now she's all upset, and it thoroughly convinced I'm a total jerk, I'm sure."
