The baby hadn't settled for a sleep longer than an hour all night. Sook wondered what Elli had been so fretful about at just over 10 weeks old but fretful she had been and unable to settle during the night. Finally, strapped to Sook's chest, she had fallen fast asleep after a feed and had been out for nearly two hours. Unfortunately Sook's head was wide awake and unable to block out the thoughts of anyone in the house. They had weird dreams, did Sullys.
With the baby sound asleep on her chest, Sook decided a morning stroll might clear the airways through her lungs and give her some time for herself, only having to block out Elli's emotions in her dreams. Babies were easy to block, as long as you weren't pregnant with one.
It had been a good half hour of walking around the house and garden before she got bored and decided to go around the edge of the city instead. For once, Sook heard heavy thudding footsteps before she could hear the thoughts of who was attached to them.
"Hello?" she said, swinging around slowly, her hand over the baby's head to help her. "If this is you, Jake, it's not funny."
