Daniel knew what had changed with him and Lacey was the fault of the Island, not his girlfriend. The relationship with another man that the new memories had bought with them Daniel was working hard to push down. After all in her mind she wasn’t with him now, and they all had baggage, Daniel himself used to be married and didn’t know what he’d do if Sha’ree ever came here.

He was putting the whole episode through the part of his mind that was used to the associated madness that came with the paradoxes that often accompanied gate travel and that was just about enabling him to cope

Lacey watched Daniel, wondering if she should have lied about Brent. If he'd never known, then he wouldn't be hurting now. On the other hand, he might have found out some other way, and hurt even more than he did now. She wished she had a way of calling home and getting advice from her old friends. The strange thing was Brent was the one she was most likely to talk to, if she could.

Lacey cleared her throat and walked into the room, looking at Daniel. "Hi."

Lacey managed not to ask why she wasn't someone he trusted. It oddly reminded her of Brent and her questioning why she wasn't his best friend instead of Hank.

"You weren't dead, but I didn't remember you. I didn't remember anything from the island, while I was there. It was as if I never left." Lacey sighed. "Dog River is a tiny place, compared to everything we have here, but it was home. And it was falling apart. Brent and I helped each other through it, feelings developed...it wasn't because I chose to forget you. The island did that."

"Of course. There'll always be feelings. He was a dear friend, even before we dated. He changed me. Before Brent, I was the kind of person who never stood up for herself. I thought a relationship had to be two people agreeing all the time. He showed me it was okay to have differences, to joke around, to have fun. Without remembering you, it was easy to fall for him." Lacey looked at Daniel. "He's an important part of my past. You're my future."
