It had been one month since Kirino Issei had set foot in the Imperial Palace hotel in Las Vegas. There were 345 miles between the Blood Drinker’s city and the place where his mistress waited. Issei had walked them twice now in the service of that same mistress. But it was not the distance that made him feel weary. It was what he had discovered there. Even now, he did not know what he would say to Hatsuyuki-dono.
Issei had traveled to Reno to be her eyes. The Sanguine prince, Lucian, believed that there was trouble brewing there, and Hatsuyuki agreed with him. He had volunteered to make the journey where they could not, where a vampire of their age and power would surely be noticed. He had seen the Blood Drinker, a giant of a man with hair like the pelt of a wild animal. He had seen the vampires that man gathered to himself, vicious creatures every one of them. But he had also seen one that he had not expected, and this was his dilemma now.
He ascended the stairs of the Imperial Palace, disdaining the elevator as he always did. Nineteen flights, and at the top, Hatsuyuki’s residence. She had renovated the drab old hotel to suit her particular tastes and now her suite on the top floor was full of light, airy rooms separated with beautifully painted screens and decorated with tasteful minimalism with carefully chosen works of art. It was a reminder of the world they’d come from, and Issei felt at home here as he did nowhere else. Stepping into the entrance hall, Issei listened for indication that anyone was in the apartments. “Tadaima,” he called out. He didn’t need to raise his voice too loudly as Hatsuyuki, with her superior senses, would hear him no matter where she was. He removed his shoes and left them in the alcove by the door and went on silent feet into the interior rooms. He thought he knew where she would be.
