After doing some studying on the history between my time and now, I'm sad to see that humanity has learned so little.

I'd always thought by the dawn of the 21st century, we'd be done with war and using our scientific expertise for the betterment of humanity. Instead, we're still using it to find better ways to kill each other.

Terribly disappointing.

Sometimes even using technology for the good goes wrong. The road to hell paved with good intent and all that.

Very true. I suppose I just hoped we’d advanced in a half century.

Not sure we will ever eradicate the causes of war. More than slightly depressing.

I can't help but be optimistic, though. Someday, somehow, we'll learn the hard lessons.

I have seen science condense an entire decade into a single piece of candy. Quite fascinating. Far more interesting than war, though perhaps not as profitable.

From what I've seen for every advancement there are more men who will take advantage of it. It's unfortunate. All we can do is hope reason sinks in.

War comes naturally to human beings. Mankind, like any other animal, has a drive for violence selected through evolution.

How else would survival be ensured if not for the ability to detect harmful predators and react accordingly?

We're not in a state of nature anymore. We have the intelligence and capacity to be better than that.

You are thinking far too much of philosophy and not enough of biology. Mankind does not, in fact, possess the ability to function without the presence of threat detection and subsequent protective aggression.

We do not have the capacity to survive if it is removed or excessively over-ridden, because this drive also provides protection from seemingly insignificant threats. If that process is removed, as it was in the case of patient SM-046, then individuals begin to approach situations without recognizing negative social cues, lack the ability to gauge environmental threats, and often suffer horrific consequences because of this.

I believe most universities cover this somewhere in the first year or so.

Do you want to tell him that utopias are built on an inherent mercenary or do I?

Even the most renowned idealists in history wrote some militaristic structures into their utopias. Plato's Republic discussed, at length, the need for mercenaries to protect the people right alongside its emphasis on socialism, equality in education, and pacifism. It was, in fact, that pacifism that made the mercenary class necessary because Plato knew that a utopia was not a universally applicable system but rather system that only worked as a small-scale community. He also recognized that man's inherent nature was one of violence. And yet we know Plato today for his reason and writings on love and logic. He was able to hold both ideas equally and without conflict.

There is, in fact, a scientifically noted correlation between higher threat response and higher intelligence. Of course, we can't do any in-depth studies on these responses in an ethical manner, but anecdotal evidence, as well as studies done on mice, and various brain scans on neurologically unique individuals suggest a high relationship between the two factors. So it's rather offensive to suggest that we're all unevolved barbarians beating each other with clubs.

Yes, I have read Plato. I don't need to be lectured on his teachings.

My feelings are not on what is, but what could be. I come from a time in which militarism is applauded and used more than it should be. I myself have acted more violently at times than I wish I would have.

I simply hoped that we had evolved in fifty years. It seems we have not.

I've seen all of it. From Adam and Eve on.

Goes in cycles. Over and over. You can't judge humanity on a lifetime or two.
