[Filtered Away from Lyra]

Questions I never thought I'd have to ask...

Daycare? Or, I don't know, a nanny?? It's not going to look great if I call out of my first lectures of the year. But I honestly don't know her well enough to be like 'here, sit in my office for an hour and read, I'll be back', and that doesn't really sound like solid parenting anyway.

Most parents at least have nine months to consider this. I got forty-eight hours.

[Filtered TO Lyra]

So
Do you like
What do you want to

Do you know how to ride a bike yet? Is that a thing on the planet you're from?

What is a Bike?

I think no

If you've never heard of one, probably not.

It's a way to get around but it's also a lot of fun to ride. We'll get you one with training wheels so you can see if you like it. My dad taught me when I was about your age so I guess it's time I get to teach you.

You know, I haven't ridden one in a really long time. I might need to practice, too!

How would you like to spend a day with your Aunt Pepper and baby Ethan tomorrow? I've got to spend a few hours at work but the two of them would love to play with you for a while.

You definitely can. We'll get you a couple more coloring books, too. And maybe some games you can play when Ethan isn't napping.

And no hitting the baby with the sword! He's just not as big and tough as you are yet.

Okay! I'll bring some books too.

Can I read to the baby? I've never seen a boy baby before. How long has he been out of his pod for?

I bet Ethan would love if you read to him. We don't have pods here on Earth, but he was born just a couple months ago. He's still very little.

I'm working from home, so she can come stay with Ethan and I while you work.

Have her bring some things to do and maybe we'll go to the park during my lunch break.

Pep, you're amazing. Thank you. I'll have to see what she wants to do for school, they start back after the long weekend, but that's a huge help.

Plus, Aunt Pepper would love some time with her newest niece.

Well we can't all be the most important person in a tech superbusiness.

I think she'd like that. Strong female role models who don't stab people regularly.

Perks of them not showing up till they're six? You didn't really get much Morgan practice, though.

I learned that long ago.

You...got a small child dropped on you by surprise at your...what is it, a school? City? I feel like I should know this one.

I'm catching on to that. Except stuff like major decisions like where to send her to school or, you know, what she should do while I'm at work.

Accelerated pregnancy. Magical world, lots of messed up shit.

The major stuff is tough and I am the last person who should be giving this advice, but try not to overthink it. I'm not sure there's a lot of choice in schools here, anyway.

Holy shit.

Yeah. Okay, no, that makes sense. Someone pointed out, at least she's old enough to talk and say what she needs. That's something.

That was pretty much my reaction, too, but I also wouldn't trade her for anything.

Talking helps. My partner has this psychic connection. Figuring out what my baby wants would be a lot easier if the Entity had brought him here with us.

Yeah. I think I maybe get how that feels.

I have the distinct feeling the Entity doesn't care much what would make things easier. Though...does he hear her in baby talk or like, adult speech, or is it just feelings? That's fascinating.

I can keep an eye on her if you like. I got pretty good at keeping kids entertained during the day, and can even help you get her ready for school if you're planning on sending her.

Yeah? I mean, that'd be great, if you're free. Pepper gets her tomorrow, apparently. She wants Aunt Pepper time, and I'm not going to argue that for a minute. But I definitely want her getting an education.

I am, yeah. If you want to start her off easy with just a couple hours a day or two or three days a week, that'd probably be best. Don't wanna overwhelm her with too much right away, or just toss her into a normal school without some basics.

[info]sevenphds

Yeah, that'd probably work. Classes don't officially start for another couple of weeks, I think, but it would be good to know what she already knows. Fortunately she's young enough that hopefully the huge jump in, well, planets won't affect her too much.

I did not have a Winston. I had a mom who stayed home till she could officially kick me to school and then went back to work. But there have to be daycares or after school programs in the city.

My Dad wasn't around a lot before he died, Winston was the only one around. He and Roth, my dad's friend, but he was gone a lot too.

I know there's a Youth Center here, I wonder if they have something for younger kids.

I admittedly got pretty lucky in the parent department. Especially considering among my friend group, I think I'm the only one with a stable home life.

For some reason I always thought it was geared more towards the teens. I could be very wrong, I'll admit that. And we do have a few girls around who babysit the littler ones, but that won't help on a school day.

It wasn't all bad, and to be fair playdates with me at a young age didn't always go over well, after a while they stopped making me go.

Possibly, just didn't know if they had an option for younger. It was just a guess, I didn't get that much exploring of the city before we changed.
