These ostriches need to learn the concept of personal space.

[ Under 21s ]

Hey, my name is May and I just started working at the Youth Center. I don't have many preconceived notions about what this place is or should be, which is good because it's not for me. It's for you guys. With that in mind, I'd love if you could answer some questions for me, because we can't shape it into what you guys want or need without your input. Feel free to make the message private to me if you don't want to share with your peers.

  1. I'd like to get to know you all, so let's start with names
  2. Did you know the Youth Center existed? Have you been to an event or the center itself?
  3. I know adults aren't cool, but if we could facilitate activities just for you guys, what would bring you to visit us?
    • Social events? Non-school-related classes (like exercise/sports or hobbies)? Something else? Be specific and dream big!
  4. Would you or your peers use a safe space for advice outside of your guardians, with the express promise that whatever you share is confidential?
    • Would you like this to be one-on-one, or in small groups? Both?
  5. If we could do one thing to make your life here easier, what would it be?

2. Sort of. I've never been.
3. I don't really know what a youth centre is or what sort of thing happens there.
4. I've never had a guardian. I usually just ask Wanda if I don't know something.
5. It's already easier than back home so I don't need anything else.

Nice to meet you, Laura. Thank you for answering.

Right now we're looking to let you guys define what a youth center can or should be specifically, but ideally and more generally, it would be a place where you could hang out with other people your age that would be safe as well as stimulating. I'm glad you're happy here, but if there's anything you think of that would be nice, we'd like to be able to provide it.

2. No.
3. I do not know. Got a bloody huge family and a lot of the time it's easier to stick around them than try to get used to other people.
4. Maybe. My parents are both here but [...] the most either knows me from their time is as an infant. I would not want to talk in a small group but one on one might work.
5. There is not really one thing.

A pleasure, Louis, thanks for answering.

I can see how a big family could be helpful for navigating this place. You wouldn't have to always engage, if you wanted to just come in for some one on one chats, that'd be fine too.

What if you pick your top five things? Is that easier?

Hi, Cirilla, thanks for answering.

A youth center is a place where you can be with people your own age and make friends, in a general sense. We're hoping to touch a little bit on everyone's interests so that it's useful for as many people as possible. We can bring in something you enjoy doing from your homeworld, it doesn't have to be how people do things here.

2. I did. I went to a dance there once.
3. Most of my friends were adults before coming here so I disagree with the 'adults aren't cool'. Social events can be so much fun but also have the potential to be awkward.
4. It might be nice to have one-on-ones. I'm pretty open with my parents and have others I turn to, but it's always nice to have the option for an outside opinion. Ixnay on the small groups.
5. I love it here and have zero desire to ever return home...so raincheck on this one?

Hey Morgan, thanks.

How was the dance? Worth having another or would it be too awkward? I don't think there's a fix for the potential awkwardness of youth in any of the worlds yet.

People seem to be with you on the groups thing.

I'm glad you're happy here.

Nice to meet you, Tandy. Thanks for replying.

I like that idea. Would you imagine that as a group activity? Or at least open to the potential of it being a group thing, but obviously voluntary.

I wish we could bring people here, but is there anything Luke or I could do? Big weekend group breakfasts? A room where you go just to smash things?

Hi, Freddy, nice to meet you. Thanks for the response. I like these ideas! What system do you like to play most?

I wish your family would come, too, but keep thinking about something that might make you happier. Nothing is too big or too small to be at least considered.

Nice to meet you, Emma, thanks for answering.

Feel free to take your time, this isn't a speak-now-or-hold-your-peace offer. As far as I know, we're still without a professional, but I'm happy to be an impartial party who listens and keeps her mouth shut. And when we have one, I've got plans to snag part of their time for sure.

I wish that was in our power, trust me!

i feel weird answering the questions because being a teacher and helping to look after three little girls, i don't really feel like i'm part of the whole youth center world as an actual...youth. but having said that, i was thinking about volunteering there before with the person who ran it then. so, if you need any help, just let me know.
