Excuse me I'm

What is going-

Oh, I'm sorry. Things don't seem to be quite right. I believe I am lost. Very very lost.

Has anyone seen my horse?

I think the only horses here belong to the carriage ride companies that give rides around Central Park.

I have this map... but I’m afraid none of this makes any sense. All the buildings are so tall and everything is so fast and loud. What is this place?

It's a replica of a part New York City. Well, a New York City. Maybe an amalgamation of several from a specific time period. I'm not entirely sure. Do you know what the multiverse is?

I... this isn’t what I thought was back east.

Sorry, I do not understand the meaning of that word. What do you mean by time period? Is this now?

I guess it also depends on which east you're talking about. East is very big and vague, though I can make a couple guesses. No clue how accurate they'd be. But I don't think we're east or west or north or south. I think we just are.

I'm going to preface this with an apology. If I come off as if I'm speaking down to you, I'm not. Certain things make a lot more sense in my head, and I don't have the best interpersonal skills.

In essence, the multiverse is a theory that there are multiple universes (or multiple "nows") coexisting side by side at the same time. Kind of like, crudely, how you stack boxes on top of and next to each other. The contents of the boxes are universes, and the boxes themselves are next to each other. Does that make sense? It's a bit crude, but it's also a large concept that's not always the easiest to visualize. But, essentially, you got plucked from your box and put into this one, as have the rest of us.

A time period is a large chunk of time (typically years) with some kind of significance. In this context, the significance is historical. There's usually specific characteristics that mark each "period". Kind of like rings on a tree. Again, a crude example, but tree rings are a visual, physical representation of time passing, and some rings are thicker than others.

That is a very strange story. But I’m not in a box. I’m outside somewhere, but it doesn’t really look like any outside I’ve ever seen. There are no trees nor grass anywhere.

What... year is this meant to be?

It's a metaphorical box. I will say this city has quote a lot of green space, though it's got a lot of not green space, too. Do you see a street sign or any signs in windows that might help you figure out where you are?

From what people have said, 2020. It's February 7, 2020. Though whether or not this place has been around long enough to actually What year is it for you at home?

It may not seem right, which is something I understand, but it's what it is. Which is hard to wrap your brain around. I know. You were in one page of a book, and now you're on another page in an entirely different book and missed the plot. It's a lot to take in, and I'm sorry you got dragged into this mess.

There’s a sign that says Lexington?

... there’s a book I read once. About a girl in a strange place called Wonderland. Except this doesn’t seem like this at all. I don’t remember falling.

You’ve been so helpful, and I haven’t even introduced myself properly. I’m Dolores.

That's a good start to figuring out where you are! You can try to see if you can find it on the map to get an idea of direction. Avenues like Lexington tend to run north to south, though this place is complicated at times, and I'm happy to try to help where I can.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland? It's one of my favorites. This is kind of like that. You fell down a rabbit hole even if you don't remember falling. But instead of Wonderland you've ended up in Goodland.

What?

I used to think it was big, but this place...

We have cattle. They take up a lot of land, so we’re just outside town. But there’s so much empty land around, as far as you can see in all directions. It’s beautiful, usually peaceful. There are sometimes bandits out in the hills, but my father-

My father will be looking for me. I’m not supposed to be out this far.

Everything feels big when you're little. And then something makes you realize it might not be so big.

It sounds nice. I bet the sky looks nice at night with all the stars.

There's a theory that I think might hold some weight about how people at home aren't aware that you're gone because you've been duplicated here. If it's true, that you're in two places at once like straddling a border, than your father won't notice you're gone.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Maybe big isn't the correct word for it. Expansive, maybe. Like the world goes on forever without end, that you'll never reach the edge of it. But here, everything feels so close together.

But the lights here at night look as if somebody scattered the stars all across the ground. It has its own sort of beauty, even though there's nothing natural about it.

I... Do not feel comfortable with such a thought. Does that mean I am not the real me?

It doesn’t help that we can’t leave the island. And Manhattan isn’t very big mile wise. It’s not so bad, though. They couldn’t go out so they went up.

Cities have their own beauty. Their own frenetic pulse. There’s always an underlying beat underneath the hustle and bustle. Sometimes it’s comforting.

Me, neither. And no idea. But if you don’t feel any less real, I don’t think you are. Just a different edition of a book. That’s all.

I always knew you to be a man of your word, but I... I kept waiting. Every train that came into Sweetwater, I hoped it would bring you with it. This isn’t how I imagined our reunion, but I hope I can find my way to you soon.

I’m waiting for the doctor. He said he’d come find me. There’s a map but I’m afraid I don’t understand any of this at all. There’s no landmarks and all these buildings look the same. How’d they make them so tall?

Trust me when I say the only reason for the distance between us was that I needed to make sure I was a man worthy of a woman like you, Dolores.
