[posted early tomorrow morning, 10/10, after his morning run.. or an attempt at one]

Has anyone been outside yet today? Why does it seem like I stepped into the Land of Oz? And not in the Emerald City, that's a horse of a different color kind of way.

[...] Yes, I know what Oz is.

If you don't know some things, I'd get it. Like if you said the only thing you know about Grease is it's messy, I'd get it. Cause, you know. But some things? Yeah no. Definitely not surprised. And yeah what's not to like? For one, it was definitely a precursor to things like Star Wards and Lord of the Rings. Like if we didn't have WoO, where would we even be with epic tales? Visually it holds up through literally decades, and it was the first wide release technicolor film. And of course they had to show it off with the shoes because that RED really POPS compared to silver (or even gold). It's got some of that "role reversal" because the characters with any power and the main character are all women, which is really neat. The music is so iconic (and also Judy Garland is iconic in and of herself). It's got of iconic (if sometimes misquoted) lines and is a major reference throughout film and tv history. It's influence is far and wide, and I don't think a lot of what came after it would have really come after it had it not been made. Though it also had a lot of filming issues, but I think that's a subject for another time.

[...] The only thing I know about grease is it's oily and I used to use it on my old arm. I've seen Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but I knew of Tolkien before the war, too. But.. yeah. All of the rest of that. It's a good picture.

I'd think you'd have an idea of Tolkien, but I don't know how popular The Hobbit was when it was published? But then there's a lot of talk about Lord of the Rings and World War II and the connections there, but I'm pretty sure it's actually World War I that influenced it a lot more. I know "You shall not pass" is something from World War I and also WW I propaganda, and there's this idea of the Übermensch, which might be a bit off base right now since you and Cap I won't bore you anymore! But I'm glad you've seen Star Wars and LotR! :D

It was popular at the time, and I'd read it. The trilogy more recently, obviously. I can't say I ever went far enough into them to pick out the war influences, but I usually enjoyed reading fantasy novels when I could get my hands on them.

Which ones are you favorites? Which ones did you recently discover and like? Which ones do you not like/think are overrated?
