Alright, so, I was out earlier trying to find a store that sold Hispanic foods (I found one, so there's one problem taken care of) in the hopes that either my debit card would work here (no) or that $17.48 would be enough to buy everything I needed (yes) and I happened upon a movie theater with a help wanted sign in the ticket kiosk.

...Which is great. That's exactly what I needed. But I'm sort of curious about whether they're going to be able to check any of my references? Does anyone ever check references or is sweeping up popcorn and Mike & Ike such a menial task that anyone capable holding a broom could do it? I mean, sure, it'd be nice if my former managerial position could mean something more than $7.50/hr and filling sodas for eight hours a day, but should I hold out much hope?

Also, I know it's summer and it's about two years too late chronologically, but I can see the NYU campus from here and it's kind of getting me right in the feelings. This was supposed to be the future for me and now it's the past and I totally missed it. It's weird. And I've coped with weird before, but this is really weird. It's just right there and there's nothing I can do about it.

I suppose this is better than the possible alternative, though. Considering all the shit the keeps happening back at home and the notable lack of masked killers around here, this is almost good. And then I look out and see those purple Tisch banners and I'm just like... damn.

Chitauri? Sounds like Chitauri.

I can't say I'm disappointed that I don't have to deal with it. I just hope that whatever version of me got left back there is doing a decent job.

Yeah, well. People can be dicks. And they're really bad at translating scripture. Seriously. My dad can rant for weeks on bad translations. It's one of my favorite things to get him started on because he just gets so heated over it. He's not quite a brimstone-style preacher but man when he does get started... It's impressive. And I'm an atheist.

Yeah! How'd you know? Are we from the same universe?

I'll cross my fingers for her. Maybe she's making the best of it.

That sounds pretty impressive. I'm curious about his rants now. And I'm... agnostic, I guess? I don't not believe in a higher being (I've seen too much in 16 years to think there isn't something), but I don't know who or what that is. I mean, there's Thor and that whole group, but I don't know what else is out there. I don't know who else is out there. And I don't see why it couldn't be God or just a god, like this entity thing. I'm definitely open to the idea. But I also don't dismiss anyone else's beliefs. That'd just be a dick move, and, anyway, who am I to say what is and isn't "correct" with what someone believes? Mostly, don't be a dick, don't hurt people, and try to do your best to help out others if and when you can.

Nah, I'm just really into aliens.

Yeah. I'm pretty good with whatever everyone believes as long as they're not using it to be cruel to people. Faith isn't a weapon. But people like to try to make it into one. And me, y'know, I like to think about energy and consciousness and how complex the universe is and either that had to be specifically designed by something to work that way or it was just a random accident. I'm okay with it being an accident. Just space dust smashing together at the right time and in the right place. It's sort of beautiful. There's so much possibility in that. Anything is possible.

That doesn't really explain Oh okay.

Exactly. Faith isn't a weapon. Differences aren't a reason to be cruel. The universe (well, universes) is (are) so complicated that it seems like anything is possible. If there's a higher being at the top of the higher being list (highest being I guess?), cool. And, if not, cool. Because, like you said, it's kinda beautiful if everything coalesced the way it did by accident or some higher math that we haven't fully begun to understand yet.

Yeah, if there is a highest being... I mean, I don't think we could ever comprehend it and I get that religion, as a cultural function, is a way to understand things that are that much bigger than us. But I just never had much use for it? Besides, I come from a mixed-faith family, when you're raised with three different faiths it's kind of easy to see where they all overlap and just apply it in a secular way. Like, the tenants are nice, but man the fandom sucks.

Sometimes the worst things about religion are the people who practice it. Not everyone! Just the loud assholes. I don't want to participate in that type of fandom. I'll just enjoy my Star Wars fandom instead.

There are loud assholes who are atheists too, though. I try not to be one of them, try to keep an open mind with everyone and everything, but I'm also not afraid to call out either side when they're being dicks. There's just not enough time in the day to be that bitter.

And I, the human coffee bean, know a thing or three about bitter. So take it from me.
