MORGAN
MARKUS
The new scenery was a welcome change for Morgan. They all deserved some fun following the events of the previous weeks, and she had always loved winter as a child. There was something magical about a fresh blanket of snow covering the ground, but add in the fact that they suddenly found themselves in cabins? Well, everything about it reminded her of home.

The first thing she thought of upon laying her eyes on the change, was ice skating. Morgan hadn’t had many extracurricular activities outside of her inventions growing up, but she always loved skating. Much like tinkering in a lab, it was something that required a lot of focus and didn’t leave much room for other thoughts. Everything went away when she was gliding across the ice, but there was also science involved. Physics, to be exact. It was all about balance, controlling her center of mass, and the moment of inertia.

Figure skating was the only sport that had ever interested, Morgan- and it wasn’t just because of the physics. It was also beautiful, and she felt beautiful doing it. The exhilarating feeling of soaring through the air didn’t hurt either. The only other time she experienced it was when she was flying with her suit, but even then, she couldn’t feel the wind against her skin. There just wasn’t much that compared to skating, and she had naturally wanted to spend as much time as she could on the ice as soon as the Entity had gifted them this little getaway.

Although it made her nostalgic for home, in some ways, it was better. Because in Goodland, her family was whole. She had both of her parents, all of her siblings, and she had Markus.

She had wanted the two of them to enjoy it together. So, early Thursday evening, she sent him a message, asking him to meet her near the frozen pond. Morgan didn’t intend on spending their time with the ice- since she had already been out on it every chance she got- but she could at least twirl around on her skates until he got there.

Initially the chill in the air and the snow falling had reminded Markus of home. Perhaps not in a good way, either. When the war had finally come it had brought bad weather and an icy enviornment even their complex circuits had struggled to survive through.

When he'd woken up Markus' first thought was that he'd been sent home, such was the temperature around him, but the log cabin threw him and he quickly realised that this was another Entity-stunt. It wasn't the most comforting thought, given their recent experience, which were still burnt bright into his memory.

The text from Morgan gave him something positive to think about and he replied quickly that he'd meet her there. As he walked to the lake Markus was able to take pleasure in the peace and beauty of the unspoilt drifts and the way sounds seemed muffled by the fresh snow. It was strangely comforting and he wondered if this was why centuries of humans had looked forward to the first snows. A time to curl up with family and hibernate until it was over, or an excuse to play.

As he was approaching the lake Markus caught sight of a streak of movement and immediately went still. His instincts told him that he was safe but they'd been wrong too many times lately. Again he saw the figure and this time he smiled, seeing the familiar hair fly out behind Morgan as she seemed to fly across the lake's surface. He moved slowly and quietly, wanting to watch her for a few more moments before she saw him, enjoying the look of exhilaration and freedom her body-language screamed.

Markus approached the edge of the lake and as she looked his way, to which he raised a hand of greeting. There was no rush in his actions, happy as he was to see her happy.

A slow smile spread across Morgan's face when she caught sight of Markus as she whipped around the pond. Increasing speed, she flung herself into the air for one more spin, pulling her arms in tightly against her chest, and closing her eyes. This was one of the best feelings in the entire world, and she resided herself to make time for the rink back in Goodland's New York.

Morgan counted the turns before landing gracefully a few yards away from him. She laughed then, a true laugh that broke through the peaceful silence around them and seemingly echoed off the drifts.

"Hey, you." She said a little breathlessly as she skated over toward him- her cheeks rosy from the cold. "I'm glad you came."

It was hypnotic, watching the spins and turns as she moved so easily across the ice and it brought a broad smile to Markus' face. Morgan was so clearly happy, which made him happy as a result.

Markus knew that laugh would play on a loop whenever he he felt glum, it was one of the most joyful sounds he'd ever heard. This seemed like Morgan truly in her element, which was strange to think of given all they'd been through so far.

"Hey yourself," he said smiling and stepping towards the edge of the lake. "You've made yourself quite at home here. I wasn't totally sure you'd want company," Markus said with a teasing lilt. "But of course I came," he added, as if there'd been any doubt in that.

Morgan grinned as his teasing tone, brushing her hair out of her face and reaching for his arms for balance. "I love it here," she mused, glancing around at their surroundings before meeting his eyes. "It's one of the only places I feel free." That shortlist of freedom inducing spaces was growing since she arrived in Goodland, however- and one of them was standing in front of her.

"Skating was a part of my life back home," she continued, her smile holding steady. "It probably has a lot to do with the physics behind it." Morgan's eyebrows lifted at that statement because of course, the sport that held the scientist's heart was one with a slew of equations.

"But of course I wanted company," she teased with a tilt of her head. "What do you think about our sudden change of scenery?"

He put his hands out, giving her a strong frame to balance on the impossibly thin knives that Morgan seemed so comfortable on. "You say that as if I hadn't noticed," Markus answered with a teasing smile, loving how happy she seemed to be in this strange place.

Markus was always interested to hear about her home-life, which was such a massive step from the world he'd known himself. "Or it's just to do with the speed and freedom," he countered, with a raised eyebrow, suspecting he knew a little about the way Morgan's mind worked by now. "Something that could be dangerous, but also something you can control?" he asked attempting to understand. Much like his own penchant for parkour, it allowed him a way to explore the limits of his physicality and the only person that could get hurt was himself. "I think I understand."

He gave a shy smile when she admitted to wanting his company, and hearing it would never get old. "I thought I'd been sent home, to begin with," he said looking around at the snow. "It was winter when I left. I don't think I appreciated how beautiful snow could make a city look," Markus said looking around. "Never had the chance to fully appreciate it." He looked back at Morgan with a grin, "and you're going to try to teach me to skate, aren't you? I just know it!"

Morgan's eyebrow arched in response to his brilliant deduction. She tried to keep a straight face but it failed horribly and gave way to another bright smile. "Okay fine. It may have everything to do with everything you just said."I'm never going to be able to get anything past you." Truth be told, she liked that he knew how her mind worked. "You understand," she asked curiously. "Does this mean you have something comparable that you like doing?"

His shy smile made hers widen more. She always committed these endearing moments they shared to memory, so she could fondly recall them later. When he spoke of thinking he had been sent home, however, she tried not to look too concerned. He had expressed to her that, much like herself, he didn't want to return home. And to be quite honest? She didn't know what she would do if he was ever sent back. Perhaps it was selfish on her part, but she couldn't help it. Pushing all of that aside, because she wanted this day to be a happy one, she forced her smile to return.

"Well, in that case, we can't waste this chance now can we?" Slipping her hands down into his, she gave them a gentle squeeze. "I mean, yes that was always a part of the plan," she said with a sly smile. "But we could build a snowman, go sledding, take a walk and explore or I don't know...start with that over there." Still grinning her sly grin, she motioned over to the bench near the pond that was decked out with a blanket and two thermoses. One of them was filled with hot chocolate, and the other was giving off the tell-tale glow of one of her holograms. "Since you've never gotten to fully appreciate winter? You get to decide what is on the agenda."

"I have absolutely no doubt you'll get something past me," Markus answered with a chuckle, "but it won't be this," he told Morgan happily. There was too much energy and joy about what she was doing to boil the feeling down to equations and physics. He cocked his head to one side and nodded, "you could say that," he answered mysteriously. "This isn't quite the place to demonstrate, though, but I promise I will. Just as soon as I can," Markus told her with a wiggle of his eyebrows that hinted at future fun.

Markus caught the flicker in her smile and knew she was trying to put on a brave face, but he couldn't lie to her. Intellectually he knew there were white-lies, that protected the people you cared about, but it felt a dangerous road to go down. Particularly when Morgan wore her heart on her sleeve as she did. Instead he offered her a smile and said, "I was just confused. I'm not going anywhere," which was the only assurance he could give her.

"Nope, don't waste a single moment," his smile broadened in reply and he nodded. "Teach me? And then we can try the other things?" Because, when it came to it, he was a thrill-seeker too and though he doubted he'd even be able to stand up on the ice Markus loved the idea of spinning until he was giddy. "Did you manage to find skates for me?" he suspected there were very few things that were beyond Ms Stark.

Morgan couldn't help but laugh as his eyebrows wiggled. "So mysterious," she said with a teasing smirk, but she was excited to one day see what he was speaking of. She wanted to see him doing something in his element, something that made him as happy as skating made her. These happy moments had been few and far between lately, and he deserved every single one he could get his hands on. "I'm going to hold you to that promise." Not that she for one second thought he wouldn't keep it. They had formed quite a habit of promising things to one another, and she didn't suspect either of them to break one.

"I know," she said softly. "I guess I was so excited about the snow that it didn't occur to me that it would cause you to think you had been sent back- albeit briefly. "

Her eyes sparkled happily when he said he wanted to learn how to skate. Deep down she had hoped he would. It was a part of herself that she wanted to share with him, and she was so excited that she leaned in to press a kiss to his cheek. "I'd love to!" Grinning, she motioned toward the bench again. "There are a couple of pairs for you near my bag. I wasn't a hundred percent sure about your size, so I had to guesstimate."

He raised an eyebrow and smiled, "I can go with mysterious," he answered with a chuckle. "My thing isn't as spectacular as yours, but ice and snow would definitely hamper my ability to perform," Markus added a little more intrigue to the pot, knowing it would just make Morgan more curious. "Wouldn't have it any other way," he told her, because once he promised her something he'd do everything in his power to see it through.

"I understand," Markus replied. "Different conditions have different connotations for each of us. I'm glad this one make you happy, though," he said giving her flushed cheeks a gentle stroke.

Markus grinned happily at the kiss, feeling strangely embarrassed but not entirely sure why. "You came extra prepared. I shouldn't have expected anything less," he said as he looked towards the bag. "Now all I have to figure out is how to get them on without you falling on your ass," he told Morgan as he stepped back from the ice and switched to holding her with one hand and then, as she regained her balance, none before bolting for the bag and changing shoes as quickly as he was able.

He tried to stand on the blades but his ankles just wanted to bend in strange and unexpected ways. Instead he crawled through the snow towards the lake and back towards Morgan. "And that was my most dignified entrance ever," he said with a laugh as he tried once more to get to his feet. "I'm not sure how you do this," Markus looked at her in wonder.

"You are being extra vague on purpose," she began, clearly amused, "and now I'm even more intrigued." She didn't for one minute believe that she wouldn't find his thing- whatever it was- any less spectacular than he found hers, but Morgan would allow him to think so until she could prove him wrong.

"Thank you," she whispered, leaning her head against his hand. "I hope you can find some happiness in winter after today too."

Another laugh escaped Morgan's lips as he tried to figure out how to get the skates without causing her to fall. She could have quickly begun skating again or found her balance, but the scene that was unfolding before her was incredibly cute. "I hope they fit alright," she called after Markus as he quickly changed into the skates, and then he was crawling through the snow, and she was covering her mouth with her hands to stifle the laugh that was that threatening to escape her throat. "That was possibly the best entrance I ever witnessed," she teased and reached her hands out for him to try and balance with her. "Getting on the ice is the hard part; what comes after is easier."

"I would never intentionally do such a thing," Markus deadpanned, though he gave a tiny hint of a smile when Morgan said she was intrigued. "I guess you'll just have to be patient for a little while," he said giving her nose a teasing tap with the tip of his finger.

Markus gave a soft smile and answered, "I have a suspicion that won't be too difficult."

So he wasn't exactly dainty. Or going for any podium finishes in this year's 'getting started on skates' awards. He was making Morgan laugh, though, which made him happy enough to continue this folly. "I think that was an entrance we'll never mention again," he said with a chuckle, wondering how in the hell he actually got to his feet now he was at the lake.

Markus really only had one answer and after running the variables through his programming and pulling himself into a crouch he pushed upwards, springing to his feet and then balancing precariously on the twin blades. "I felt less worried facing the army back home," he said wide-eyed as he tentatively shuffled forwards. "And I always thought Bambi was being a drama-queen," he told Morgan as he stepped onto the ice and felt his foot attempt to run away immediately.

"Of course you wouldn't," she replied with another smile- her nose scrunching up at the tap to her nose. "Fine. Fine. Okay. I can attempt being patient."

"Oh no, that's an entrance that is now permanently engraved into my mind." Her shoulders shrugged exaggeratingly, and she gave him her most faux-angelic look. "Have I mentioned the eidetic memory?" She winked then, trying not to laugh harder.

She observed Markus carefully as he gathered his bearings and inched toward the ice. "That deer needed a better teacher," Morgan mused, quickly skidding in front of him as soon as his foot started to go the wrong direction. "Careful, Bambi," she said teasingly- grabbing hold of him in an attempt to keep him from busting his ass before he even really got started. She met his wide-eyes with her own reassuring ones. "Hold on to me, and don't look at your feet. Look at me. I can't promise you won't fall, but I do promise to go slow."

Markus dropped his head to his hands in fake-despair. "Just great. With your eidetic memory and my programming, our mistakes are going to be preserved for all eternity," he told Morgan with a shudder. "I'm not sure either of us ready for this," he told her laughing. "Perhaps there should be some kind of contract that we never share," he teased, because he might be on the receiving end of the teasing today but tomorrow it could easily be Morgan.

Right. He could do this. Markus' leading foot threatened to learn the skating thing long before his trailing foot even left the ground. Luckily Morgan's intervention kept him upright and as he inched his weight back to centre-mass he let out a small sigh. "Lesson one: don't do the splits. Check!" he said meeting Morgan's eyes with an amused grin. "So if I look down I'll fall down - perfect," Markus grimaced. "I'm guessing I'll do no better looking at the sky?" He was so ending up on his ass today and he just had to hope when he did he didn't injure anything. Especially not Morgan!

"What exactly should I be aiming for here?" he asked as he tested different methods of weight distribution, hoping to strike the perfect balance that would allow him to glide across the ice. Stuttering against the ice was more his speed at the minute and he'd never before realised just how rough something so slippery could be! "Definitely out of my depth here," Markus said with worried eyes, "I can see why people usually start hugging a rail!"

Morgan threw her head back and laughed as she had when she landed her triple-axel. "I'm not sure we're ready for it either, there should definitely be some kind of contract. We can come up with terms and put it into effect immediately." Morgan adored their heart to hearts, but there was something about their teasing banter that made her heart flutter in other nice ways. Sure, sarcasm ran deep through her veins, but it was different with Markus.

"Right. Don't look at your feet, and don't look at the sky. As confident as I am in my abilities to keep you upright, let's not take any chances." Maybe she should have thought to bring one of those skating accessories that resembled a walker. Damn, she knew she hadn't thought of everything.

Taking his hands, she moved them gently to her waist, barely moving backward across the ice. "You've got to locate your centre-mass and control it. Hold on tight to me, bend your knees slightly, and try to steady your legs. Just don't let go and move your arms around, that will most definitely make you fall." Her voice was soft and unwavering, and her eyes never left his. She was trying to reassure him, especially after seeing his worried look.

He loved the sound of her laughter, especially when it bubbled out of her like that and it was infectious. Markus gave a nod of approval. "From here on, anything that passes between us, either secret or embarrassing, is here-by enshrined in our pact!" he said with incredible seriousness, though his eyes twinkled with a mischievous get-out clause.

Markus nodded and stared straight ahead. "Confidence is key, though I'm totally falling on my ass, aren't I?" he said with a chuckle that set him wobbling on his skates. "Note to self. Don't have fun," he said as he looked straight at Morgan and pulled a face, cause her seriousness was bringing out the worse in him.

"Oh, I'm holding," he answered as they started to move tentatively, Markus' grip on Morgan not faltering as he attempted to take some of the balance into his own hands. He followed her instructions to the letter and for a moment he felt as though he was stable and almost moving independently of his partner. Which was when his foot hit a crack in the ice which had him flailing to keep himself upright. He immediately let go of Morgan, making sure he didn't bring her down with him, but a second later he was on his ass and laughing. "How the hell do you make this look so easy?" he asked shaking his head and pushing himself to his feet to try again.

Morgan attempted to stifle her laughter and put on her most serious expression. "If either of us violates the terms of this pact, we will be held accountable for our actions." Much like his eyes, hers were filled with a bit of mischief.

"Oh yeah, you're totally falling. Everyone falls their first time out." The face he pulled made her seriousness falter, and she laughed again, wobbling a little herself. "Whoa. None of that, Bambi. Remember what I said about balance?" She was teasing, of course, despite her efforts to deadpan.

Morgan's eyes glittered with admiration as he began to hit a little bit of a stride, but then he collided with the ice. "On no, are you okay?" Although she was concerned, she couldn't help but cover her mouth and laugh again. "I think you just saved my ass, such a gentleman." Reaching for his hands again, she smiled brightly. "Years of practice and mapping out the exact formulas to make my skating look pretty."

"Then it's agreed," he said with a decisive nod. "We break the pact, there will be consequences!" he told Morgan with a grin. "Perhaps even forfeits," Markus added with a soft chuckle, "that will equal the embarrassment of said transgression. It seems appropriate, right?"

Markus took her hand as he got back on his skates, wondering if it had been that flicked of pride he'd seen in Morgan's eyes that had made him trip rather than the rough ice. "You're gonna keep calling me Bambi till I get the hang of this, aren't you?" he asked with a shake of his head as he reassumed the position. "Just because I get to fall on my ass doesn't mean you do too. Something tells me you've already had more than your fair share of falls," Markus teased as he started to inch towards her once more.

"Years, huh?" he asked with a wince. "You're pretty determined when you put your mind to it, aren't you?" Markus was more impressed than disheartened, though now he'd felt the way the skates ran away from him he found it a little easier to control them.

"Forfeits seem a perfectly reasonable consequence," she began with a tilt of her head, "and I'm sure along the way, we can think of other consequences for breach of contract."

Morgan squeezed Markus' hand. "One of the first things I learned was that you're going to fall. It's inevitable, and also crucial because you have to learn how to get back up. I even had to practice falling," scrunching her nose up again, she smiled. "So yes, more than my fair share, and I'm fairly certain I have more falls in my future." Taking both of his hands, she placed them on her shoulders this time- now that he seemed to be standing a little straighter. "And I'm sure Bambi won't stick, although now that you mention it? I was thinking of Moriarty for your bike, but 'Bambi' is so tempting." She was clearly amused and slowly began skating backward again.

"Once I've set my mind to something, it's hard to change it." Her smile was still bright, and she was obviously happy he had gotten back up again. "Truth time, how much do you wish you had opted for the nice safe walk through the snow right now?"

"We're going to end up breaking this contract just for the forfeits, aren't we?" Markus said with sudden realisation in his voice. They were both thrill-seekers at heart and it would turn into a game only they understood the rules to and weirdly, as he looked at Morgan, he was okay with that.

Markus listened in amusement, having few doubts that she was embellishing the truth for the benefit of his ego. "Is this the 'get back on the horse' speech that you've adapted for the ice rink?" he asked with a laugh as he balanced against her shoulders. As strange as Bambi sounded, there was something quite sweet about the way Morgan used the nickname and so long as the kids he taught never found out he might even wear it. The way he was moving right now definitely deserved it, though he was starting to get a feel for the position he needed to assume to stay upright. Strangely moving was easier than standing still and he was happy to let Morgan guide him. "You know, you're a pretty good teacher," he said with a raised eyebrow. "Are you after my job?" he asked smiling.

"Moriarty? I like it. Sliding through the streets at night like a story-book villain," Markus gave her shoulders a gentle squeeze. "I like it. Moriarty it is," he said happily. Now that the bike was named, he just had to buy the bike. At least now he had an image in his mind to fit the fantasy. "Morgan, Markus and Moriarty... yep, it works," he said with approval at the alliteration.

"I might have noticed that about you," he said smiling with her. "I always tell you the truth," Markus said cocking his head to one side contemplating the question. "I'm not very good at opting for safe, or walking away from the chance to learn a new skill. So no," he told Morgan. "I might not be good at this, but I'm having fun. Besides, we can still go for that walk," he said with a smile.

"Oh yeah," she said with a knowing nod of her head. "We're definitely going to break this contract on purpose, probably numerous times." Much like Markus, Morgan was completely okay with that fact. "Rules are meant to be broken."

"More or less." Morgan smiled and ever so slightly quickened her pace. "I have a whole list of things I've adapted that speech for, so you should probably prepare yourself to hear other variations in the future." She could feel him getting a little more confident, and that just made her smile brighten. "No, you see, I'm far too much of a worrier ever to be able to teach future generations." Tucking her hair behind her ear, her cheeks flushed a little. "But thank you, Bambi. I'm glad my useless ice skating knowledge is being put to good use."

Morgan's eyes lit up with excitement. She hadn't been too sure if he would like the name, or if it would be too predictable. He had given her a copy of 'On the Road' to read, and admittedly that's where she got the idea. Her mind was put at ease though with his words and gentle squeeze to her shoulders. "Morgan, Markus, and Moriarty. It's kind of perfect."

"See? I can't get anything past you." She laughed a little more and then met his eyes again as he spoke. "I'm not very good at opting for safe or walking away either, but I suppose you already know that." Reaching up, she placed her hand against his cheek as they continued to glide across the ice. "I'm so glad you're having fun."

"Numerous times, you think?" he asked with an amused smirk. "I could see how that would play out. It would be terrible to betray such trust in one another," Markus deadpanned. "And yet..." he added with a smile, leaving the sentence hanging.

He gave a laugh that left him wobbling and trying to control his skates as he looked into Morgan's eyes. "I should strap in for the Ted Talks, huh? Good to know you're thinking about the future," Markus said with a twinkle in his eyes. He gave a nod, "you'd be worried the kids would follow your own rebellious example. Totally understood, you should definitely be discouraged from teaching," he teased. "At least, teaching anyone else. I'm already corrupted, so no damage done. And I'm also going to be stuck with Bambi," Markus said with a resolute sigh.

"It is perfect," he agreed. "Now you have to come shopping with me," he said resting his chin on Morgan's head and smiling. "You can make sure I pick the right bike," seeing as she'd be the one sharing it with him. At least, Markus hoped she would.

He looked down at her and smiled happily, "I'm definitely having fun. It's possible it's the company," Markus said with a wiggle of his eyebrows, momentarily leaning into her hand before loosing his balance once again. "Well this seems to going well," he said as he sat on the ice laughing as gravity reminded him to keep his balance and not give in to the moment.

"And yet..." she repeated with her most mischevious smile yet and left it there just as he had.

"I've decided to look forward and try to stop looking back. We can't change the past- no matter how much we may want to. Our choices led us here, with maybe a little higher power intervention, but still. They led us here, and I like it here." When 'here' passed her lips, she pressed her hand gently against his chest to let him know he was part of 'here,' in case he had any doubt. "But yes. No need to be a bad influence on formidable minds. I'm perfectly happy with my one student." She laughed again when he remarked on his new nickname. "I solemnly swear never to call you 'Bambi' where anyone other than you can hear it."

Morgan's eyes fluttered closed when he rested his chin on her head, a content smile crossing her features. "Of course I will," she replied softly. She was just as much a part of his open road fantasy as the bike itself- at least it felt like she was.

Her cheeks flushed again at his words, but then she was no longer touching him because he had fallen once again. Laughing along with him, she somewhat gracefully managed to sink down to the ice next to him. "I think this fall was my fault," she mused- looking him over and brushing some freshly falling snow out of his hair.
