What: Markus and Connor are zapped into the maze to ensuing badness

Warnings: Spoilers for Detroit: Become Human and death

Markus blinked.

He didn’t know where he was or why it was so dark. Nor had he intended to go offline, which was disturbing. He started a quick system-scan to see if he’d sustained damage to either his body or programming. As the scan completed, with no verified errors, Markus jumped backwards as something brushed against his ankle.

As he switched to night-vision he felt pressure clamp tight, halting further movement and as he glanced down he saw the mass of broken machinery surrounding him and, reaching for him, the disembodied hand held him tight.

“This can’t be!” Markus fell backwards, scrabbling away and trying to shake his ankle free. Instead of letting him go, the hand broke away from its limb and fell useless onto the bed of strewn metal and body-parts that made up the junkyard. “I can’t be here!” he shook his head in disbelief, the sight of so much death more than his heart could take. “I have to get out of here,” he told himself as calmly as he could. He’d done it once and he’d do it again, but please god, don’t force him to hurt anyone else? Not again!

Nothing had changed here since he’d been shot by the cops. The bodies of his people, screaming and dying, lay all around him, discarded by humanity as broken and beyond repair. As he managed to force his feet to move people reached for him as though sensing life in this place of death and decay. “I’m sorry,” he whispered as he clutched his head, trying not to see the faces of people he couldn’t help, “so very sorry!”

The walls stacked around him and Markus knew that the only way out of here was to climb. As he studied the route he stopped dead, a face in the tangle of bodies catching his eye. “North?” He staggered at the sight of her eyes rolling towards his, knowing that she only had moments left before she died.

“I always told you they’d come for us eventually, Markus,” she said softly as the light behind her eyes finally failed.

He reached out to touch her cheek, “I never meant to leave you,” he told her softly and gently closed her eyes. He’d never understood the human habit until that moment, but dead as they were he couldn’t bear to see his own failure in her death. He’d failed them all.

A hand shot from the wall and clutched his arm, followed by a second that sent North’s head rolling across the floor. One after the other more arms pulled him tighter in, until it was all Markus could do to keep from being pulled into the wall itself.

“Not like this!” he gasped as he began to fight against the grasping limbs and heard the whispers of friends and fallen comrade’s whisper and his in his ears ‘Join us’. “I don’t want to die!” he screamed, as he battled against the androids. Markus felt tears falling against his cheeks as he finally pulled free and scuttled away from the wall, gasping for breath and sanity. “I want to live…” he whispered to himself, knowing that in order to do so he must tackle the wall once more. Not there, though. Not where North had died.

Connor had known about the maze since everyone had been talking about it over the network. He had been trying to round up some of the police to help get the people out of the maze, but some of them didn't seem all that concerned over it. Figures.

He had been heading back to his desk when he blacked out. When he woke up, it was pitch black and he heard hear distant screams and whispers. He quickly sat up and scanned the area. He was in the corn maze. How did he get in there? He had been nowhere near it. And yet, here he was.

He scanned his systems to make sure he had no errors and when none were found he finally got up. Right, he needed to get out of here now. He scanned the area before making his choice of which way to go.

He had been making his way through the maze for over a half-hour now. Remembering which directions led him to dead ends and which ones didn't. What he didn't count on seeing was Markus. He had reached out to get his friend's attention, but that didn't seem to work. It seemed like he was lost in his head. Connor took a step back and watched as Markus acted out whatever his mind's eye was seeing. "Markus!" he finally called out again when it looked like the other android was going to try to climb the wall that wasn't there. "Hey," he reached out again, this time grabbing Markus' arm.

Markus carefully plotted the route he'd take up the wall, this time being far quicker and more careful. He braced himself to jump but just as he was about to leap a hand clamped around his wrist and the shock knocked him off balance. "I just want to live!" he cried out as he was thrown back to the ground by the displaced energy. "Please, just let me go!" he begged, lacking the energy to even shake himself free of the new android holding on to him.

"I tried to save you," Markus told the androids. "I don't deserve to die like this, please," he begged. "Please!"

"Markus! Snap out of it!" Connor literally grabbed Markus by the shoulders and shook him. Only grabbing him by the wrist or touching his shoulder did nothing. Maybe this would actually get Markus to come back to this world and not the one he seemed to be stuck in.

He heard his name above the cacophony of android voices as he was shook roughly by the hands capturing him. Markus felt sure he knew the voice, but didn't want to believe that his friend could be in this terrifying place too. "Connor, no," he said shaking his head and letting the tears fall, "not you too. Please not you," he hissed as he tried to see some way out of this hell. "You can't leave me," because soon there would be nobody left. Did he really want to live with all those deaths on his hands? Would he ever be able to move on?

"Not me too?" He was a little confused since he couldn't see what Markus was seeing. He knew one thing, though. He wasn't getting through to Markus. He needed to figure out another wake to make the other android snap out of it. It only took him a split second to come up with an idea. Hopefully, it worked. He grabbed Markus by the arm and started to pull him away from the area of the maze they were in. He was hoping that whatever had a hold on Markus would finally let go once they got moving again.

How was he moving? Markus could feel hands restraining him but could see the world around him receding as he seemed to move away from the wall of the junkyard and towards... what? He should have passed through the mass of lifeless androids but instead he was propelled forward, gently but forceable. "Connor?" he asked hopefully as he gave a puzzled look around him. The walls were made of corn and the only hands holding him were of his dear friend.

He looked into Connor's eyes with a mixture of hope and confusion. "You're real, aren't you?" Markus breathed, almost in disbelief. "How did you get me out of there?" he asked, looking around for some way back to the junkyard.

Connor kept dragging Markus along only stopped when it seemed like whatever had a hold over him had disappeared. "Welcome back," he finally said as he let go of Markus. No need to hold onto him any longer. "Yes, I'm real," he replied, eyebrow slightly raised at the question. "I just grabbed you and pulled you along until you stopped seeing whatever it was that you were seeing." He paused for a moment before asking, "what were you seeing back there?"

It didn't make sense that Connor had simply pulled him out of the mass of broken androids, but here he was as large as life. Markus had no idea how any of this was possible but his systems were error-free and there was no reason for him 'seeing' things. "I... don't know how to explain it," he answered looking at him helplessly. "I don't think I have the words or the emotions to explain it," he said hanging his head for a moment before looking back at him. "But I can show you," he said turning Connor's palm towards him and ran his hand over it, transferring the images and experiences he'd seen.

Before Connor could even ask any more questions, he was being shown exactly what Marcus had seen. There were so many broken bodies and pieces of their kind just strewn around the place. Some of them barely hanging on to their last bits of life, begging for help. This place was awful. He pulled his hand away, breaking the connection between them when a broken version of himself showed up in Markus' vision. That must have been when he found Markus. And that was all he needed to see. "We need to get out of here." If this place made Markus see all of that...he was almost afraid to see what else it had in store for them both.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know how else to explain," he said softly, shaking his head as if it would clear the memories from his mind. "What could do this to us, Connor?" Markus asked, almost afraid to know the answer, if there was one to be had. "And how did I get in here? I was in the apartment resting and then..." he was in the junkyard amongst every nightmare he could imagine. "I'm totally in for getting out, just show me the way," Markus answered as he started to feel more himself. "Which way is out?"

"It's...okay." He got why Markus did it. Fewer questions to be asked if Conor saw exactly what he saw. "I don't know." He wished he had the answer, but he was as clueless as Markus. "I was at the police department when I woke up here. I don't think there is any real rhyme or reason as to how we got here." Since Markus wasn't feeling the need to try and climb any walls, he started to lead the way through the maze. "Not sure, but we'll find it sooner or later. We can't be trapped here forever."

Sharing the images he'd seen felt uncomfortable, but knowing Connor had also felt his emotions was worse. "You wouldn't have understood any other way. Not the true horror," Markus told him softly and he also knew Connor would keep questioning him until he did understand.

"So you were just working and then came online here?" it shouldn't be possible to screw with their programming to that extent. "Do you think we've been hacked?" he asked with a growing unease as he looked around him. "I can't think of another reason for the visions or for just appearing here, can you?"

Whatever the reason for their sudden break, they needed to find a way home. "So we move and see what else is out there?" he looked at Connor with a concerned frown, "but what if there's worse out there?"

Well, not only had Connor seen the horror that Markus went through, but he had felt it, too. He didn't want to deal with that again.

"Yes." He shook his head. "I check my systems when I came back online. I didn't find anything." Not to mention he knew what it felt like to be hacked and this wasn't any kind of hacking. Something else happened to them. "Maybe it has something to do with this place?" It was a guess.

"Then we deal with it. We can't just stand here forever. We need to get out of here."

Markus nodded his agreement. "My systems are all clear too, but whatever caused the... hallucinations," or dreams? he didn't have the right words to express what he'd been through, but hallucinations was as close to the mark as he could come. "It had to be powerful. Maybe the Entity?" he suggested, wondering what Connor thought of the whole thing. "Unless there's an opposing power. Something evil," he said dropping his head, wondering if his musings about android-religion had finally unhinged him.

He looked at Connor and nodded, "we can handle it. So long as we stick together," Markus said in a defiant tone. "We move and get out of here, if we can," he said letting a little doubt enter his voice once more.
