Tony wasn’t typically the “bright side” type of guy, but he was almost grateful for the distraction that Friday the 13th provided. Stepping into his Iron Man suit forced him into superhero mode and, in turn, he focused on matters at hand. However, the bad luck seemed to subside as Goodland neared sunrise. He hadn’t been pinged in over an hour so he decided it was safe to return to his apartment. He wanted to check on the kids anyway.

He entered the apartment quietly, but Tesla still barked from, he presumed, Peter’s room. He sighed. Sure, the sun was up by then, but it was early for a weekend. He hoped he didn’t wake anyone. He changed into sweat-pants and a band t-shirt before he slipped into the kitchen for a cup of coffee. He considered eating something, but quickly realized he didn’t feel like it. He rubbed his blood-shot eyes. He felt exhausted, but knew he wouldn’t sleep well if he went to bed. His sleep had been improving somewhat, but losing Pepper made rest even more difficult than before. The bed felt lonely.

Peter probably would have slept in a bit more if it hadn’t been for Tesla’s bark. That was the one bad thing about an apartment; there was no backyard to let out a dog. Instead, he had to get up and get dressed to take her out. He didn’t mind it, of course. But it made some things a little less convenient, like sleeping in or going out to play (which required an actual park of some kind and the hopes that the other dogs around were friendly. He’d found out pretty quickly not all of them were well socialized). Walks were nice, and he enjoyed going on them, but, at the moment, he was just tired. Getting back into the swing of school plus everything else that this place seemed to be doing? That was a lot. That was exhausting.

“‘M coming,” he mumbled as he stumbled out of bed. Blinking, he looked around his bedroom before pulling on a pair of jeans. “Gimme a minute,” he told Tesla as he put on his shoes, pausing to give her a scratch behind her ears. Then he grabbed her leash and attached it to her collar, grabbed his wallet with the thought of maybe picking up a bagel while out, and headed out of his room. He did his best to be quiet as he headed toward the front door, not wanting to wake anyone up. Just because he and Tesla had to be up early didn’t mean everyone else couldn’t enjoy sleeping in.

“Oh,” he said as he spotted Tony in the kitchen. “Sorry. I hope we didn’t wake you,” he added, feeling a little sheepish. He wasn’t entirely sure when Tony had gotten in, but he knew it was definitely after he’d passed out. And if he or Tesla had woken the man, well, Peter felt bad. It was, after all, the weekend, and everyone deserved to sleep in. Especially after the week they’d all had.

Tony glanced up from the cellphone he was fiddling with while he enjoyed his coffee. “Oh, hey, underroos,” he said, the old nickname unconsciously slipping as he regarded Peter and the dog. “Okay, okay, you mutt,” he told the dog, who was obviously excited to greet him. “I’m coming.” He left the kitchen, stopping only to place his coffee on one of the living room tables, before he knelt to pet Tesla. “Oh, please, no,” he complained as she licked his nose. “Okay, enough.” He spoke gently despite the rebukes, showing he did indeed like Tesla. He straightened up and turned his attention to Peter. He thought he seemed tired. “I just got in,” he admitted. “I think I woke the dog. Sorry about that. I can take her out.” He ruffled the boy’s hair and smiled. “Seems like we haven’t had Tony and Pete time in forever, kid.” He felt guilty about that too. Sure, they had the internship, but Tony’s attention couldn’t always be on Peter while in the office. Tony, honestly, was starting to feel pulled in multiple directions, but he was determined to prioritize the kids. “We’ll fix that, I promise.”

"I didn't say I didn't want to do it," Peter said quickly, confused, trying to reassure Tony he hadn't mean to say or imply or infer that he didn't want to be his best man. He'd just been surprised. Of all the people to pick, Peter never would have thought of himself as best man material. They were always older guys the groom was friends with, right? That's who they were in movies at least. And that was about the end and beginning of his knowledge about best men -- movie references. But he did know it was a big deal, and he didn't want Tony thinking he didn't want to or something, even if Pepper wasn't there.

"I don't know anything about being a best man," he continued. "But that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to be your best man. I would. I do! I mean, if Pepper comes back, and if you guys plan your wedding, and you still want me to be," because he knew there were others here, especially with Colonel Rhodes there, "I'd like to." And he meant it. And he did hope Pepper came back. Some people seemed to, so there was always hope she'd return.

"You just may have to tell me what a best man does, or I'll end up looking it up on the internet," he added, his tone joking though his face was sincere. He really did mean what he said about wanting to be Tony's best man if the man still wanted him to be should Pepper return.

Tony stopped near the store as they finally reached the corner. He blamed sleep deprivation on bringing all the shit up. He placed a hand on Peter's shoulder while a happy Tesla, still on her leach, wagged her tail to greet passing customers. "I just want you next to me if the day comes," he admitted. "You'll hold the ring during the ceremony. Pep and I have been together for ages so we weren't planning on all that traditional stuff that leads up to the wedding. We just wanted to be married." He winked. "And to keep me from doing anything stupid like running away." Not that he planned on it if given the chance to marry Pepper. They were practically married anyway. "You and me? We're still a good team, hmm? I know there are a lot more people here since we arrived." He chuckled. "And that our apartment is crowded," he continued, "But we're still in this together, kid."

Peter honestly had no idea what all that traditional stuff that leads up to a wedding consisted of. He had ideas, yeah, but the ideas in his head didn't involve a seventeen year old being allowed to do half of those things. And cake testing, which he wasn't sure was a bridal party activity, per se, though he didn't see why it couldn't be. But holding rings and standing next to Tony? That he could do. And he would be happy to if this place allowed it. A few other thoughts entered his head, less pleasant than a wedding, and he quickly shoved them to the back of his mind. It was too early for such things.

"We're still a good team, yeah," Peter said with a smile. "And I can do that. The rings holding and standing thing. I hope Pepper comes back and comes back soon so you two can have your happily ever after." Because, as far as he was concerned, they both deserved it. Especially with Morgan there now, too. All three of them deserved it. He had to believe that, somehow, they would get it.
