Tony wasn’t typically the “bright side” type of guy, but he was almost grateful for the distraction that Friday the 13th provided. Stepping into his Iron Man suit forced him into superhero mode and, in turn, he focused on matters at hand. However, the bad luck seemed to subside as Goodland neared sunrise. He hadn’t been pinged in over an hour so he decided it was safe to return to his apartment. He wanted to check on the kids anyway.

He entered the apartment quietly, but Tesla still barked from, he presumed, Peter’s room. He sighed. Sure, the sun was up by then, but it was early for a weekend. He hoped he didn’t wake anyone. He changed into sweat-pants and a band t-shirt before he slipped into the kitchen for a cup of coffee. He considered eating something, but quickly realized he didn’t feel like it. He rubbed his blood-shot eyes. He felt exhausted, but knew he wouldn’t sleep well if he went to bed. His sleep had been improving somewhat, but losing Pepper made rest even more difficult than before. The bed felt lonely.

Peter probably would have slept in a bit more if it hadn’t been for Tesla’s bark. That was the one bad thing about an apartment; there was no backyard to let out a dog. Instead, he had to get up and get dressed to take her out. He didn’t mind it, of course. But it made some things a little less convenient, like sleeping in or going out to play (which required an actual park of some kind and the hopes that the other dogs around were friendly. He’d found out pretty quickly not all of them were well socialized). Walks were nice, and he enjoyed going on them, but, at the moment, he was just tired. Getting back into the swing of school plus everything else that this place seemed to be doing? That was a lot. That was exhausting.

“‘M coming,” he mumbled as he stumbled out of bed. Blinking, he looked around his bedroom before pulling on a pair of jeans. “Gimme a minute,” he told Tesla as he put on his shoes, pausing to give her a scratch behind her ears. Then he grabbed her leash and attached it to her collar, grabbed his wallet with the thought of maybe picking up a bagel while out, and headed out of his room. He did his best to be quiet as he headed toward the front door, not wanting to wake anyone up. Just because he and Tesla had to be up early didn’t mean everyone else couldn’t enjoy sleeping in.

“Oh,” he said as he spotted Tony in the kitchen. “Sorry. I hope we didn’t wake you,” he added, feeling a little sheepish. He wasn’t entirely sure when Tony had gotten in, but he knew it was definitely after he’d passed out. And if he or Tesla had woken the man, well, Peter felt bad. It was, after all, the weekend, and everyone deserved to sleep in. Especially after the week they’d all had.

Tony glanced up from the cellphone he was fiddling with while he enjoyed his coffee. “Oh, hey, underroos,” he said, the old nickname unconsciously slipping as he regarded Peter and the dog. “Okay, okay, you mutt,” he told the dog, who was obviously excited to greet him. “I’m coming.” He left the kitchen, stopping only to place his coffee on one of the living room tables, before he knelt to pet Tesla. “Oh, please, no,” he complained as she licked his nose. “Okay, enough.” He spoke gently despite the rebukes, showing he did indeed like Tesla. He straightened up and turned his attention to Peter. He thought he seemed tired. “I just got in,” he admitted. “I think I woke the dog. Sorry about that. I can take her out.” He ruffled the boy’s hair and smiled. “Seems like we haven’t had Tony and Pete time in forever, kid.” He felt guilty about that too. Sure, they had the internship, but Tony’s attention couldn’t always be on Peter while in the office. Tony, honestly, was starting to feel pulled in multiple directions, but he was determined to prioritize the kids. “We’ll fix that, I promise.”

Although Peter had the ability to talk at length if allowed, there was always something strange about talking about himself. It was one thing to have attention focused on him based on something he knew and something entirely different when it was just about him. He didn't mind it, per se, but it was always a little weird to him to talk about himself.

"School's good. Weird because it's all kind of a repeat but with some of the same junior year stress," he said with a shrug. "Not sure about new friends, but I've got friends, so I'm good," he added. It wasn't like there were all that many people around his age here, and while I he wasn't sure they all wanted to be his friend, he'd managed to make friends with at least some people. Or so he thought. He considered them friends, or at least friendly, though he never knew if others considered him a friend. Sometimes he still doubted even MJ thought of him as a friend, though he was pretty sure she did.

"How are you," he said, looking over at Tony while Tesla sniffed a tree. Peter wasn't as stupid as he may have come across at times, and he wasn't so oblivious as to not notice the behaviors of people he lived with. Even with other things taking up his time, he noticed things. And it wasn't like he didn't have a reason to make sure the man was doing all right. People disappearing, he'd come to realize, was not an easy thing to deal with.

Tony listened, really listened, as Peter talked. He was interested in the boy's life and remembered how much he wanted his father's attention when he was a kid. Tony, subsequently, wanted the kids he cared about to know they always had someone in their corners no matter what else was on Tony's plate.

Tony was caught off guard when Peter turned the conversation around on him. "Me? Oh, fine." He waved a hand in the air. "I mean obviously I miss Pepper. Steve too." He shrugged. "But all we can do is keep figuring this place out, right?" His cheerful voice, however, didn't disguise the haunted look in his eyes. He did miss his fiancee and friend, but his feelings were complicated. He not only missed them, but worried about losing everyone else, including the kid next to him, he loved. It wasn't a new fear. How many nightmares did he have in his world? Still, the disappearances felt cruel. Death was unavoidable. Everyone would die eventually, but people didn't just vanish into thin air every day.

He wrinkled his nose as Tesla relieved herself next to the tree. "Good girl," he praised. "And good job training her, kid."

Peter watched Tony as he spoke, then watched him for a few seconds after. He might not always catch everything, but he wasn't so oblivious or blind as to not notice the haunted look in the man's eyes. He also wasn't so far in his own head that he didn't know what some of the disappeared had meant to Tony. They'd meant something to quite a few people, including himself, so it was, if nothing else, safe to assume there were those, especially Pepper, who'd meant a whole lot to Tony. Really, more than a whole lot. However, he decided not to push the man on the subject. He knew he didn't like talking about some things, so he tried to extend the courtesy to others. That didn't stop him from giving the man a quick look that said he wasn't so stupid as to not know he wasn't fine before turning his attention to Tesla.

"Good potty!" he said, giving her a pat on the head. "Yes, you're a good girl. You're a very good girl." He scratched behind her ears befor straightening up again with a shrug.

"It helps that she wants to learn," he said, which was true. She was definitely a smart dog, and she seemed more than happy to learn new things. Peter suspected as long as she didn't get bored, it wouldn't be too difficult to ensure she didn't have any mishaps in the apartment, from bathroom accidents to too much chewing. "I'm thinking about getting her one of those puzzle boxes for dog treats. Probably keep her busy while I'm at school," he added, looking back at Tony. "Unless you want to build something like it with me. Not really sure how to make that, but I'm sure I can look it up. It can't be that hard. I mean, they have things where the dogs can press a button and get a treat. She does not need that, though. Her name is Telsa, not Pavlov." He smirked at his own bad joke. "Maybe Dahlia would like a cat version of it," he added, letting his mind wander briefly, wondering if cats liked cat treat toys and if MJ would want one for her. He made a note to ask MJ later and look up if cats responded to such things.

Tony caught Peter's look although he let it slide. He knew the kid wasn't dumb, but there was no use reiterating what they both already knew -- the disappearances sucked. All they could do was move forward and concentrate on the present. Who knew how many more moments they'd have in the exact versions they were currently? Tony wanted to make the most of it.

"Sure," he easily agreed when Peter asked about building the puzzle. "I think they'd both enjoy it." He cleared his throat. "You know, might as well tell you this even though it is moot now..." He was anxious to move and so he fidgeted in place. "I made a puzzle for you too. Not that you are a dog or anything...well, I mean, you are sort of like a cute puppy, but also, you know, very mature when you need to be..." He paused briefly to collect his thoughts. "I had a whole day planned and it was going to end with giving you a puzzle. It was going to ask you to be my best man when you solved it." He flung his hands in an "oh well" gesture. "Funny that you mentioned making them today is all. I guess we think alike." He pointed down the block. "You ready to keep going?"

Peter wasn't entirely sure what to make of Tony's words. The man wanted him as his best man? He certainly wasn't expecting that, and he wasn't entirely sure what to say about such an honor. He didn't know much about being a groomsman, and he certainly didn't know anything about being a best man. Wasn't there someone else Tony would have preferred? Not that Peter wasn't touched! It was just very surprising. But a good surprising. A warm, fuzzy feeling kind of surprising. Out of all the people he thought Tony could choose, and he had wanted him to be his best man.

He wasn't entirely sure what to say at that moment, so he nodded a little and started walking again. Was thank you the correct response? Or maybe an I'd be delighted? Even if it wasn't happening just yet, even if it never happened, Peter knew he had to say something. But what? What were the right words? This was not something they taught at Midtown. There was no class in high school on these types of real world scenarios. He knew real world prep classes existed, but he doubted they included how to respond when someone tells you something like what Tony told him. Maybe they had special classes for that, though? Maybe Goodland had such things? Not that he expected to be in a lot of weddings. And he always assumed if he were invited to any weddings in the future it'd be, you know, in the future. When he was older.

Gathering his thoughts and swallowing, Peter glanced over at Tony and said, "I'd've said yes." Because he would have. Among other words, no doubt. "I don't know what a best man does, but I'd've said yes. It'd be an honor." And would have required a bit of research to figure out if there were special duties that differed from just being a groomsman. "I-I'm not sure what else to say," he added with a little sheepish laugh. "Thank you? Is that appropriate? Thank you for the honor, Tony."
