The fears we don’t face become our limits.
DATES: Saturday, August 3 - Tuesday, August 6

SUMMARY: Ostrich Villa residents wake up to an eerie, black sky. Dark ghost-like creatures confront those brave enough to venture out. Those confronted not only feel dread and cold when these creatures approach, but also face their worst fears. The creatures seem invincible; neither magical nor lay means kill them. Re: CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Freddy & Jason

FREDDY woke up early Saturday morning in the mood for a bagel so he quietly slipped out of his apartment after leaving a note on his door letting Jim and Nat know he was at the nearest deli. He thought the sky looked odd, but figured a summer storm was brewing. He moved fast, even with his cane, since he didn't have an umbrella. However, he suddenly felt cold and nervous when he was only a few feet from the deli. He was no longer hungry; rather, he felt sick. He glanced left and right, hoping to find a place to sit. However, that awful feeling of dread worsened. Also, was it getting darker above him? He glanced up. "Wh---"

The creature was hideous. "Uh---" It felt like it was looking into his soul. "Billy!" He called. "Darla! Pedro! Eugene! Rosa! Victor!" He flailed blindly as he thought he saw the super villain that pursued him and Billy in his time going after his family in Goodland. When did they arrive? "NO! WATCH OUT!"

He tripped and fell face first onto the pavement. His cane flew into the street. "N-no!" He gasped out as blood sprouted from his mouth. "What..."

The creature was gone as suddenly as it appeared, but left Freddy injured and sick. He tried to pull himself up so he could crawl to his cane, but it was little use. He didn't have enough spine strength.

The message from their ‘host’ had barely come out before the former Robins had fallen into their familiar pattern. They were all trained in patrolling without drawing any unnecessary attention to themselves, a task which was made that much easier with so many shadows to sink into. Whatever the creatures were wasn’t something they’d dealt with before, but in the lingering darkness it held a similar tone to plenty of their prior experiences. Horrific beings in strange clothing appearing throughout the city, and picking numerous victims with no particular method and no reasonable explanation for why? It felt more and more like Gotham city by the moment.

The only thing they were missing was a terrible theme.

To his credit, Nightwing had given completely reasonable instructions. Stick to groups, set clear perimeters, keep in communication, and try to determine exactly what they were going up against. It made sense this early into things and Jason was generally willing to follow them. In spite of what anyone may have thought, he didn’t really have a compulsion to break rules. But he also didn’t have any intention of sticking close enough to risk attempts at dredging up distant memories when there was a lull in activity. That meant that when he felt a certain sort of silence take over, one that was more pronounced than comfortable, he’d slipped away to avoid the mere possibility of it.

It also meant that Jason was the first person to hear Freddy calling out with a distinct tone of terror to his voice. By the time that he’d found the source of those cries, though, there was nothing left to see except for the boy bloodied and slumped on the ground. There was an instance of relief to see that Freddy wasn’t hurt worse than he was; he was alive even if he was stuck trying to drag himself toward a much more battered crutch than he’d had before.

Jason took off his mask as he approached Freddy, tucking it under an arm so he’d be recognizable when he came into the boy’s line of sight. The last thing he needed to do was strike more fear into his heart by appearing out of nowhere looking the way that he did like he was just some continuation of whatever had just happened. “Freddy,” he said to announce his presence “It’s okay. I’m going to help you up, alright?”

As he knelt down on the sidewalk, he offered an arm out to Freddy to help him brace himself so that they could get him into a better position. He was more than willing to completely lift him off the ground but what fourteen (and a half) year old wanted a bridal carry to be someone’s first instinct around them? Especially one who’d probably spent enough of his life having people make assumptions about his capabilities.

(OOC: I made an assumption about Freddy’s cane getting broken at this point, but if I’m wrong and that’s a later occurrence let me know and I will edit.)

Freddy would have been happy to see Jason with his mask on a normal day, but right then he only felt embarrassed. He had no idea what just happened, but it felt all too real. And that chill? Well, it hit to the bone. Still, he did need help. He saw his crutch was useless and, on some level, he realized his face was bloodied too. Heck, even the bullies who beat him up at school that time hadn't made him bleed. Later, Freddy might find the irony funny, but not in that moment. "Hi, Jason," he replied quietly. "Thanks."

He reached for Jason's shoulder as Jason inclined his arm toward him. He hoisted himself using the strong side of his body. He appreciated Jason not scooping him up. He was humiliated enough. "Crappy morning," he weakly kidded.

It was times like this that Jason wished he had all the charm and natural social graces of his brother. Dick would have known the right thing to say to help Freddy bounce back to his usual chipper self in a heartbeat, but all Jason could offer was that life really did suck. That didn’t seem like the thing to say to a child, though, no matter how true it was. “Yeah. They could have at least waited for Halloween, then their costumes would have made some sense.” he replied to Freddy’s assessment before letting his tone soften. “Are you okay?”

It was obvious that Jason didn’t really mean the bruises and split lip, but he felt like there was enough leeway in the question for Freddy to brush it off as that if he didn’t want to talk about it. The crutch wasn’t looking it’s best either when Jason reached to snatch it off the ground, taking it along with them so that Freddy could make the decision for himself once the nurse had given his face a more proper examination than just glancing down at him.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Finn + Open

The first hing he noticed when he woke up was that there were no lights. Finn tried to turn on the lamp by his bed but nothing worked. He somehow managed to get dressed in the dark and immediately hurried into the living area to see if Rey, Millie, or Susan was awake and needed help. He called their names but no one answered.

He ran to the door and flung it open only to see Kylo Ren standing there light saber in hand."Help!" he yelled and took off running. Finn didn't want to run, he wanted to fight but he had no weapon so he ran until finally he could run no more and he turned to face his attacker. Just as Ren moved closer to him, Finn heard someone's voice that he didn't recognize and then he fainted.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Edmund Pevensie & Open
[info]justed
2019-08-03 07:57 pm UTC (link)
Nothing set warning bells ringing for Edmund like an unprompted reassurance. He didn't quite panic at the mysterious text message, but he did strap his newly regained sword to his waist when he set out of the apartment. The lack of sunlight during what certainly ought to be daytime hours made him uneasy - not to the point of losing his head but enough to send a chill down his spine. Predictably, with the darkness the temperature dropped. A break in the August heat wasn't such a bad thing, but it was quickly dipping past comfortable and into icy. Edmund wiped clammy hands on his trouser legs.

As he passed the mouth of an alley, Edmund heard a rattling sound and turned. He'd faced some monstrous looking beasts in Narnia, some similar but none exactly like this. It looked like one of the Fell, something out of the White Witch's army of monsters, as soon as he had the thought more rushed in around him: werewolves, hags, Toadstools, and the dark spirits of corrupted trees. Edmund drew his sword, but the throng of monsters did not attack. Instead, they gave way before him, opening a narrow pathway to where a tall, white-clad figure stood waiting.

"Edmund." The last time he'd heard that voice outside of nightmares had been on board the Dawn Treader as the ship neared Dark Island. The last time he'd seen her in the flesh had been at the Fords of Beruna. A stabbing, burning in his stomach reminded him of that battle, but although she held both deadly weapons in her hand - the wand of gold and crystal and the knife of stone - she did not make a move with either, except to open her arms wide. "My little prince."

Edmund walked forward, sword held out in front of him, but Jadis only smiled at his approach. She was still feet taller than him, even taller than she had seemed when he was nine - a decade or millenia ago. In another case, he wouldn't have said it was possible, but in hers he didn't question.

We might have visitors. So the message had said. Do not panic.

He wasn't nine years old any more or caught in nightmares of when he had been, although the air around him continued to grow colder and his heart thudded. "This isn't your world," he said clearly as he reached her.

"Oh, Edmund." The tinkling laughter sounded like breaking glass. He shouldn't know the sound that well. "It is your world," she said, lowering now empty hands to his shoulders. He prepared to strike, but she was suddenly behind him, a veil of wind and ice and snow white mantle whirling around him and then parting to reveal what her robes had hidden before.

Peter, still and gray, head turned to some sight that had just caught his attention while his right hand clutched a pouch that had once been cloth but was now the same cold granite as the hand. Lucy, leaning forward, half out of her seat, arm raised to wave as if the most genius of sculptors had bound all her boundless life into a moment of stone. Susan, paused in the act of drawing her compact from her handbag, looking at him over the tiny mirror with eyes to full of terror to be merely stone.

Edmund felt the fingers that could snap iron bars dig into his shoulders. Sick and nerveless, he felt his own grip weaken, and the sword fell from his left hand. The fell beasts drew in close around them again, and he struggled for air. "Your world," the silky voice continued, "is mine."

A moment later the grip on his shoulders was gone, and Edmund found himself doubled over in the back of the alley, his sword on the ground beside him, retching into a pile of rubbish in the corner. When he came to himself, all of it - Jadis, the beasts, the statues - was gone save for the images burned on the back of his eyelids, but it seemed he still was not alone.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Edmund Pevensie & Natasha Romanoff

She couldn't sit still so Natasha headed out into the darkness with no idea of what to expect. There were strange white creatures floating around but none approached her so she skirted around them, looking for someone who needed help. She was also scanning the roofs because she hadn't seen Clint or heard from him and that would be the most logical place for him to go. He always went up when he needed to help or hide in some cases, it was where he felt more comfortable.

Natasha was hurrying past an alley when she heard someone throwing up. Not her favorite thing in the world but she turned into the alley and saw Edmund. She didn't know him that well but she had spoken to him on the network and she knew that he was Rose's roommate. "Edmund," she said approaching him slowly. "It's Natasha. Can I help you? Are you okay?" She wasn't sure how spooked he was and there was a sword lying next to him. The last thing she wanted was to find herself facing the end of a blade.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Vanya & Five
[info]martyrisms
2019-08-04 08:22 pm UTC (link)
It wasn't unusual for Vanya to be the first out of the house, to head into town while it was still dark and grab some coffee, maybe bring back a coffee for Five and donuts for everyone. She was trying to establish routines, to feel normal in some way. Routines kept things stable, and she needed to keep her emotions on a nice level playing field. The energy-containing devices Tony had made for her were really helpful in letting Vanya identify her own emotions and try and change them if need be, Vanya thought as she made her way back down the streets towards Ostrich Villas. Two coffees balanced precariously in a carrier on top of a soft pink box of donuts, her attention almost fully on where she was walking and gauging every little slip of the coffees on the box to make sure they didn't fall.

So it was these sort of thoughts and that sort of focus that kept Vanya from noticing right away that the sun hadn't ever come up. It should have by now, shouldn't it? She barely noticed the cold, though as she got closer to the Villas it got more and more apparent. An intense feeling of dread and fear rose up in her, the colors on her pendant and bracelets going from a soft grey to a harsh red as her heart raced. Panic attacks weren't uncommon for Vanya at this point, and though it didn't feel exactly the same, the sudden dread and racing heart were typical of a panic attack. So, it was a bad one. She breathed deliberately, trying to calm herself. "You're fine, you're fine, you're fine."

She was almost there, and she could sit down and talk to Five or she could go for a run or something after she dropped these off, to get the anxiety back down. She was trying to keep positive, forward-thinking thoughts in her head until she could get inside - but even that became difficult. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a black, shadow-like creature appeared in front of her. Stopping dead in her tracks and still for some reason holding the donuts and coffee, Vanya stared at the creature hoping it would pass or was just not as scary as it seemed. Neither of those things would happen, though, and Vanya gasped as the first hallucination hit her.

Five, disappearing all over again.
Five, dead.
Klaus, dead.
Luther, dead.
Diego, dead.
Ben's death, again and again.

And Allison - oh, God, Allison, who's throat she had slit when she couldn't control her abilities. Allison, actually dead from what she had done. All of them blaming her for their deaths and it was all true - if she had been there, if she had been allowed to do something more, maybe Ben wouldn't have died. If she was more important, if she was special, maybe Five wouldn't have left that day, and estranged himself so wholly from the rest of the family even now that he was back. If she had listened to Allison instead of the Leonard, the entire world would not be in danger - their world.

In real life, Vanya had dropped the box and the coffees. On her knees, her hands pressed firmly over her ears she cried. The stones were starting to turn white. Her eyes were starting to glow and she squeezed them shut, as if she knew, as if she could feel it. And she could feel something - the way the energy stored in the devices felt suffocating all of a sudden, the necklace hanging around her neck, choking her. The pendant part, pressed into her chest, crushing her. Take it off a voice, her voice, younger and angry and lonely, called out. Vanya tugged the necklace off without thinking, trying to escape the feeling.

The buildings around her swayed, in her vision, they were no longer separate buildings but dark black walls forming. Clean lines and flat surfaces that were pressing in around her, caging her. It started to rain, wind picking up. Vanya's clothes started to turn white and she let out a high, piercing scream as the ground beneath her rumbled and rolled. "Stop it, stop it, stop it, please. Please please please please." She repeated, curling into herself with hands pressed hard into her ears, trying to drown out every sound she could possibly hear.

Ominous messages were not good things, especially not first thing in the morning. They were made worse when they started Do not panic! and finished with a return message that any attempts to respond were unable to be delivered. What did that mean? Oh, Five understood what the words themselves meant, but in the context of this thing sending out text messages, what did it mean? Why would it be dark? Who were these visitors? What was this... being doing?

Annoyed at his one successful attempt to sleep in the last week being interrupted, Five extricated himself from his closet. He carefully organized it to ensure it did not look like anyone had slept in it, though he kept his room locked, going so far as to install a chain on the door. If anyone had wanted in, they would have to knock, and that would give him time to compose himself, to ensure it did not look like he could not sleep in his bed. And if he weren't home, it kept out prying eyes, though he doubted any of his siblings wanted to pry. He owned nothing of monetary value, and the only secret he kept that could be found out he doubted would read as more than a messy closet. But that comfort of being able to shut out the world, of knowing there was one untouched place in an otherwise strange and potentially dangerous world, was nice. It was safe.

As he tied his shoes, the building seemed to move. He straightened, briefly wondering if this was what that stupid entity was talking about when he said not to panic. But then he remembered the Academy -- a house that had not been his home in so long reduced to rumble, images of his siblings buried beneath, two versions of the same event in his head -- and he moved. He grabbed his jacket and jumped from his bedroom to the living room.

Blue eyes wide, he scanned the living room and kitchen. Not seeing her, he headed toward her room, one second walking across the living room, the next appearing inside a bedroom. Again he looked, and, again, he did not find her. Which meant she'd left already. Which meant--

One moment he was in Vanya's room, the next just outside the doors of the apartment building, looking up and down the dark, rainy street.

"Shit," he said when he saw her on the ground, when he saw the being before her. He didn't know what it was, didn't know what it was doing. He had the vague sense that these were the visitors that stupid text message had meant, but his mind focused in on his sister, on the way her clothes were turning white, on the way she curled in on herself. He ran toward her, pushing through the sudden feeling of dread, of regret and misery, of utter loneliness and near soul crushing despair.

"Vanya," he said, sliding to his knees as he came to a stop in front of her. His eyes roamed over her, over the whitening ground. Briefly he saw the Academy in ruins, his brothers and sisters crushed by debris. No, he told the vision, focusing on the present. He caught sight of the necklace, looked at her neck, then grabbed it. He didn't know what to do with it, didn't know if he should touch her, remembering his last confrontation with her, how she'd managed to trap all of them in some kind of energy beam. He didn't want to provoke her, but he couldn't let her lose herself again.

"Vanya, please," he said, his vision shifting again. The Academy was intact, and his father--NO! he screamed in his head, forcing himself once more to the present, a part of him dropping deep down inside, pulling away from the fear and pain. He would not give in to the past.

"I'm here," he said, voice calm. Slowly, carefully he reached out toward her. "Just listen to my voice, okay? Nothing else. I'm here. But I need you to focus. You aren't alone, all right? I'm here. It isn't real. Whatever it is, whatever you're seeing or saw, it isn't real. But I am. Please come back."

It wasn't real, none of it was real - neither was this Five who was in front of her, she could hear him, but how could she know it was real? He was saying he was, and she wanted to believe him but she was crushed, her thoughts so absolutely muddled she couldn't be sure.

Listening to his voice - she heard it and the sound was all she focused on and the ground rumbled even more. "No, no no, bad idea." She covered her ears again and tried to focus on the nothingness, on no sound, and as painful as it was - the thoughts, the memories, and the feelings she felt, instead of the sounds.

"Get me out of here Five. If you're real, if you're here, please get me out here." She begged, terrified she was going to do something worse.

A part of him broke at the sound of her begging. It broke, replaced by cool detachment and efficiency. He didn't feel the cold or the rain as he slipped the necklace into the pocket of his shorts. He didn't feel the hopelessness or fear that had tried to tie him down. But he could not be contained, could not be chained. No one and nothing could imprison him, especially not some robed thing not worth his time.

Without thinking about the fact that he'd never done it before, his mind raced, his body instinctively adjusting as he reached out, as he gently took hold of Vanya's wrists in his hand. He jumped, bringing her with him, moving through the space of the city from one point to another, to a place he thought had enough walls around it to keep the beings at bay.

His lab at Stark Industries might have been more of a good sized office, with a desk and a chair, a computer on the desk, and papers on various surfaces. There were whiteboards with calculations and a set of club chairs in front of a coffee table. The coffee table also had notebooks on it, along with a few library books he'd checked out recently. One one wall was a long console table with a coffee maker and a few empty coffee cups, and along other was what could only be considered lab paraphernalia, with a sink in the counter, more papers on the surface, a few held down by beakers.

"You're safe," he said, voice soft, still kneeling before his sister. Slowly, he dropped his hands, his eyes looking her over for any sign of injury. Seeing none, a bit of that cool detachment faded, enough to let him feel relief and let it show on his face. "You're safe," he repeated, more to himself, assuring himself that they were both safe.

The feeling of his hands on her wrists caused a tug-of-war of sorts. Part of her was immensely relieved, feeling safe and happy. The other part wanted to throw him back, to get him away from her. To hurt him for leaving her like he had, for ruining everything. For taking the one thing that made her feel like she wasn't entirely alone away from her.

Thoughts swirled in her head, but the sensation of being sucked through space left her breathless and off-kilter. All the feelings dissipated, leaving nothing but the fear. Not because the creatures had caused fear, as frightening as they (and the things they had shown her) were, but because she was afraid of herself. That she was the monster, not them. The last thing she'd seen before Five had pulled her away from it all was herself - white clothes, white skin, glowing blue eyes.

Which, as she finally opened them, still glowed blue for a brief second before the lab and Five came into focus. They faded back to their normal blue, and Vanya realized where they were, the rain and wind were gone and they were really safe in the lab. Five was really here, something that she still could not fully believe was real despite the fact that it had been a few weeks now.

"I'm so sorry, I'm sorry, oh my God, I'm sorry. Did I - Did I hurt anyone?" She asked, her voice full of fear as she took in her shoes - one full white, the other the same blue it had been, only paler now. Half of her jean pants were white, one of her sleeves, too. "I'm so sorry Five."

"I didn't see anyone else, but I don't know," Five said simply. He didn't see the point in lying, though he certainly wasn't accusing her, either. He didn't know if anyone had been hurt, if anyone was even awake. He couldn't even be sure of the time at the moment as the darkened sky gave little away about the hour. "But no buildings came down. Just some shaking," he assured her.

"Oh." he shifted a little bit on the floor, reaching into his shorts pocket, he pulled out the necklace."This was on the ground." He looked at the necklace in his hand, still wondering how it worked, still wondering if he could figure it out. "I couldn't say how it got there, but it looks intact," he said, looking up. He then held his hand out to her, the necklace resting in his palm.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Lux & OPEN!
[info]luminesced
2019-08-04 08:44 pm UTC (link)
She knew the sun wasn't out, but she was hungry and the shopping he had done with Nat seemed like it was forever ago. She should have gone to the store since then, but Lux didn't really think about meals - all she had were snacks. Which she got just about every time she left the house. Since she was basically starving to death, she decided to brave the outdoors to find herself some breakfast. Specifically, pizza. It was just around the corner and the entity had told them not to panic, right? Everything was fine.

The second she left the villas, she could tell it maybe, kinda, probably wasn't totally fine. The feeling of dread rose up in her, but she pushed it down. Lux was an optimistic sort of person, it was nearly impossible to diminish that line of thinking. "That's okay, if you're going to take away the light like that, I'll just make my own." She said to nothing but the darkened, sunless sky. To whatever was making this happen. Lux pulled her wand out as she walked, a swift and easy movement and several balls of light floated around her. It looked almost as though Lux herself was glowing.

Reassured, she continued on towards the pizza place. Her mood doesn't really take a turn until not one - but two of the creatures showed up. Maybe they were attracted to the light? Either way, they looked like pure shadows and Lux wasn't about to just give up her light like that. Shining brighter, she took a step back and readied herself. With an easy wave of her wand, light shot out at the creatures - attempting to entrap them, but it passed straight through them. The light did seem to bother them, but it didn't ultimately do what she was hoping it would.

"Okay, I see. We'll just have to keep trying!" She told them firmly, making a much more complicated movement with her wand now. Lux was now as bright as a small sun, with a rainbow sheen on the outside - a bubble of protection. It worked well physically, but their attacks weren't physical, and Lux was distracted from the one-sided fight by her thoughts. Or more, what she thought she was seeing - watching as her parents were mercilessly slaughtered for their throne. Her brother, losing in the heat of battle. Jarvan, too... Oh, no, and Galileo crumpled and broken, no longer the ever-lasting guard of Demacia. Lux blinked hard, shaking her head as if she were a wet dog and the horrible thoughts were water clinging to her fur. "Not real, nice try!"

Her eyes prickled with tears, but Lux quickly brought herself back around. "That's enough." She told the creatures as they came closer. Now, even with her naturally optimistic self, the closer the creatures got the harder it was to maintain that feeling. This feeling of dread, of near hopelessness, washed over her in waves and Lux kept retreating, taking more steps back and throwing whatever light spells she could think of straight at the creatures. All it seemed to do was make them hesitate, and then make them irritated.

Then - then she saw Peter. Oh, thank God, Peter was here! She took several steps towards him when one of the two creatures descended on him. The darkness swallowed him whole and Lux had no idea this wasn't real, had no idea it was a hallucination. "PETER NO!" She screeched, all the magic swirling around her curled in on itself and imploded. Lux was thrown back by her own magic, bright red burns on her skin. She slid across the pavement, the force of it throwing her several feet from where she landed and she slid a foot or two more. "SOMEBODY HELP!" She screamed, throwing her arms over her head. Now, Lux didn't glow like the sun, but like a rainbow, her whole body was bright pale light that reflected all the colors the human eye could see, a coat of light-armor as she tried to figure out how to get out of this.

His shield came out of the darkness in a spinning blur. It struck one of those...things...ricocheted off a light pole to return to Cap's arm. He didn't hurt it. He'd learned the best he could hope for was distraction so he could get their victim out of range.

"Hey," he said quickly but as gently as possible so he didn't startle uh..her. Steve had gotten punched once already. It hadn't hurt, but it really did slow things down. He crouched to touch a gloved hand to her shoulder as he kept an eye out for more of those things.

"Can you get up? I'll get you out of here."

She was sure this was it. Those things had just swallowed Peter whole and now they were going to do the same to her. Then - a voice, a real human voice she was pretty sure, said hey and Lux stopped covering her head to look, feeling the warm and gentle hand on her back. She searched his face briefly, taking a moment to comprehend what he said.

"Y-yeah I think so." She was hurt, but she was sure nothing was broken. "W-what about Peter? I saw - I thought I saw..." She wasn't sure now, as she stood, that she had seen the real Peter. Obviously, her parents hadn't been here, neither had Garen or Jarvan or Galio. Had Peter been a hallucination? "I need to find Peter." She said, singularly focused and forgetting the need to get out of here, to safety.

"I saw one of those things eat Peter."

"I didn't see anyone else," he said as he slipped an arm under her shoulder to help her to her feet. "These things apparently cause hallucinations. Pretty sure you'll find Peter wherever you last saw him."

He didn't let go right away. "Can you walk?" It was asked with a note of how much he wasn't worried if she couldn't. She wouldn't be the first person he'd carried to safety.

"Right, okay. Okay. Good." She was relieved that Peter was alright, but with the creatures still so near putting out that overwhelming feeling of dread, she wasn't entirely reassured. There was still part of her that thought he might be dead.

Once upright, she could feel the ache in her body but she was able to move well enough, and she shook her head at this guy's question. "I can walk, I'm fine. I mean I'm not entirely fine but you get the idea, I'm mobile. I just want to go, I want to go find Peter and get away from these things. I don't like how they make me feel. Oh, I'm Lux by the way. Thanks for saving me. If we're saved, I mean, once we get away from these things and we're like definitely one hundred percent safe, I'll thank you again."

The building shook, pulling Nico di Angelo from whatever attempt at sleep he’d been trying to make.

The building shook, and Nico grabbed his sword, out of bed, on his feet, heart racing, eyes darting for the threat.

The building shook, and the room was a cage, the walls closing in, the air growing thin.

The building shook, and Nico fled, into the shadows as fast as he could, one moment in a room that had somehow become his, the next at an intersection on the other side of town.

Sam had woken that morning with a very bad feeling. Undoubtedly he was not the only one by any stretch of the imagination, but he’d never been one to ignore his gut instinct, and his instincts told him that something akin to ‘his kind of trouble’ was going down outside. It hadn’t been a hard decision to get some supplies together and head out to investigate, fleetingly wishing his brother was here to back him up before posting on the network to state his intention. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t a little glad Jake had offered to partner up. There was strength in numbers after all, and Jake was a good guy. Sam was certain if they found anything that they’d have each other’s backs.

He threw a couple of knives and a handgun into a small black hold all he’d bought on his first day here, along with some salt and holy water he’d made using a rosary he’d gotten in fake Paris. After checking in briefly with Maya he’d headed out to meet Jake. He found him at the entrance to the building where they’d agreed to meet. “Hey, man, sorry. That took a little longer than expected.” He said as he shouldered the bag. “You ready?” He asked as he tried his best to ignore the growing sense of dread, that seemed to have increased tenfold the closer they got to actually going outside.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Sam and Jake

Jake had kept a back pack by the door to his room just in case. Hot knowing where he really was, because Goodland and Fake New York were all good and well but didn't really tell him much, he wanted to be prepared for anything. He'd collected a few essentials, flashlight and batteries, a thin but effective travel blanket, protein snacks, water. He had tape, plastic bags, rope, a couple bobby pins because those damn things were meant for so much more than hair. He had a utility knife, as well as a dagger stashed in the bag too.

He had the pack on the floor when Sam came down. he heaved it up to his shoulders. "No worries," Jake said. "I've just been trying to assess the situation out there. Can't really tell much from in here," he said. He hadn't ventured out. He wanted to be there when Sam came down so it didn't appear that he'd ditched him.

Sam threw Jake a rueful smile. “Looks like there’s nothing else for it but to actually get out there.” He said with a sigh. Sam pulled a small torch from his jacket pocket and pushed open the door. Outside it felt unseasonably cold, the kind of cold Sam associated with ghosts, and it chilled him right down to his bones almost from the moment he stepped out of the apartment building.

He glanced up the street to the left. “Guess this is as good a way to start as any.” He told Jake and motioned for him to follow as he started to head in that direction.

"Right behind you," Jake told him. And he was. He was used to taking point and leading the way, but it was kind of nice to fall in line and let someone else forge the path. Following in no way meant Jake wasn't 100% active and alert, he wasn't just along for the ride.

He knew what was at stake here, more or less. The darkness was more than just a lack of sunlight. There was something sinister in the air, it made his skin crawl, and it was unlike anything Jake had ever felt before. He was content to let Sam lead because he had no idea, really, what they were walking into.

CREATURE CONFRONTATIONS: Veronica & OPEN

Veronica heard some kind of chatter about the boogy-man being outside waiting to getcha. Ok, sure it was exceptionally dark outside. Could be an eclipse. A really, really ambitious eclipse. Whatever. She didn't believe in hocus pocus and there was shit she wanted to do.

She got two blocks from the building before it felt like she'd walked into the middle of PCHer territory without a dog, a taser or a gun. Experienced with being in potentially dangerous areas, Veronica kept walking at the same pace. But then everything went to hell.

The explosion in the air made her stop in her tracks with a jolt. Her father was on the plane. Panic, grief and fear took hold of her. "DAD! No! Nononono!" A second explosion across the street from her made her jump in place. A car had exploded. Veronica screamed. "NOOO!!" Not again! NOT AGAIN!

Something drew her attention away, and she whirled around. What she saw defied all forms of logic she found comfortable. Some ghost...thing...complete with a shroud with a gaping empty maw where a face should be was right there. Reaching for her. Veronica shrieked before falling to the ground in a ball.
