SUMMARY: Ostrich Villa residents wake up to an eerie, black sky. Dark ghost-like creatures confront those brave enough to venture out. Those confronted not only feel dread and cold when these creatures approach, but also face their worst fears. The creatures seem invincible; neither magical nor lay means kill them. The sun does not come up while the creatures roam Goodland.

Maya wasn't seeing the buildings around her. As a grown woman, she was tough, willing to face up to threats significantly more powerful than she was, but there was part of her that would always carry the memory of the scared little girl she'd once been. The creature - whatever it had been - had inflicted a psychic attack on her that she had no defense for, stripping away the built up outer layers until only the flayed, raw, centre of her was left.

That core, the traumatised nine year old girl that she'd never fully excised, didn't seem to notice or care that she was shaking, or that the pavement where her cheek was resting was dirty and slightly damp. The only thing in her mind was her father's body, abandoned on the ground like trash no one cared enough about to even tidy up, and the realisation that she was for the first time in her life entirely and thoroughly alone.
