Betty hadn't experienced such a good holiday season since she was a child. Celebrating with Bruce and the kids was just perfect. She enjoyed every minute of shopping, wrapping, and cooking. Still, it was nice to have some time alone with Bruce away from the children. They'd ring in the new year with their family tomorrow with a special meal, but New Year's Eve? Well, that was just for the adults.

"Where are we going?" Betty asked Bruce as they left their apartment hand in hand.

	"Hmmm. If you want to believe that, honey," she teased as she held her hand up, beckoning a cab. "I'll never kick myself over an evening with my handsome man." The cab pulled up and Betty slid in. "I don't know, I kind of miss the kids..." But his smile was playful as he lifted her hand to brush a kiss against her knuckles. "It is nice to have a night on our own, no matter how much I might love them." And in that moment, as he so often did, it was easy to pretend. He could almost pretend that this was the life they'd been meant to live all along. Happy together with a happy family and surrounded by people who loved them.

Bruce, on the other hand, didn't care about being too sappy. They were starting a new year, he had the woman of his dreams, and three incredible kids. Their extended family was large and yet still tight knit, and yeah sometimes the Entity liked to screw with them, but he had learned over the years to hold on to everything good while he had it.

And he knew, in that moment, what he had to do.

"I know things aren't always perfect here, but I wouldn't trade it for anything." They pulled up near the restaurant, or as close as the driver could get them in the holiday traffic, and he offered Betty a hand getting out of the cab.

"I've gotten pretty attached to fake New York. Not quite as many not great memories as real New York, I guess." That didn't mean he was going to wander off into Harlem any time soon. A thought that almost made him second guess what he was about to do. "Quick detour? We still have a few minutes till our reservation." It was no Central Park, but the little area to the side still lit up with holiday lights would make a good backdrop. And for once, his need to be out of a crowd wasn't even a little bit Hulk related.

	At that comment, he tucked her under his arm, walking her towards a little bench with a nice view of everything around them. "I'll do my best," he told her with a little laugh, dropping a kiss to the top of her head before taking a seat. "It's just... 	Betty cuddled close to Bruce, but her guard went up. Was something wrong? “Go on then.” She told herself she was being silly; he didn’t bring her to dinner and talk about their family only to deliver bad news. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

He could almost feel the tension in her - not a Hulk thing, but knowing her for so long, instead. Bruce couldn't help laughing a little. "Nothing bad. At least, I hope you don't think it's bad." Because, despite knowing how much she loved him, there would always be that spark of anxiety. That bit of him that taunted and said he didn't deserve this.

He exhaled slowly and used his free hand to pull the ring out of his pocket. "I bought this almost twenty years ago now. I thought... I had it in my lab coat. That day. You know." Of course she knew. No one who'd been in the general vicinity would likely ever forget it. "I was going to take you out to dinner that night to celebrate and then....you know. The whole planning to spend the rest of my hopefully now superpowered life with you." His laugh was hesitant. Even now he sometimes wondered how it could have all gone so wrong. "I asked the Entity and, well, it came through. Same exact one. Because I think I've always known I'd need it again."

Pulling back enough so that he could see her face, his dark eyes searched hers. "It's been so long and still, there's nothing I want more in the world than to spend my life with you. We can't get all that time back, but we have here and now and I don't want to waste it. So...you know. What I'm saying is... Elizabeth Ross, will you marry me?"

	Betty’s eyes filled with tears. He was going to ask her all those years ago! However, she didn’t dwell on their past. Tears spilled down her cheeks and she leaned in for a kiss. “Yes! He released a breath he didn't know he'd been holding and joined her in laughing. "Confession, I stole one of your rings to get this sized, but that was also in 2003, so..." Still, the ring slipped easily on to her finger and while the style might have been considered a bit old-fashioned, it looked classic on her.

But then, Bruce thought most things looked perfect on her, so he might not have been the best judge. He kissed her again, softly, before looking over her face. "If you hate it, we can always shop for a new one, you know, my feelings won't be hurt any."
