Who: Kate Bishop and Matt Murdock
When: Friday Afternoonish
Where: The infamous orchard of sassy and snarky apples
What: A date An outing that hopefully doesn't end up with more hospital and clinic trips. There are no promises.
Warnings: PUNS. All the puns. No, really. Watch out for them.

There had been warnings. There had been assurances that these trees were not normal.

Which meant that Kate, despite knowing that another outing could prove dangerous given their track record, had given Matt a look. Were they at that point where he could understand looks? Kate had done her best to make it as obvious as possible. The "We should not go out there but we should also definitely go out there because us" look.

A look that was certainly followed with a cheeky "You know what they say: an apple a day..."

It was hard not to have the reaction Kate had at the sight of the orchard. Stretching across the city, Kate stared slightly slack-jawed and eyes wide. It smelled nice, too. Not like those apple-scented candles and body sprays. Fresh and earthy with a sweetness.

"Take a picture, lady! It'll last longer!"

There was a gentle thud not too far away before a particularly dull red apple rolled it's way to stop at Kate's foot. The apple turned and blew a raspberry. "How do you like them apples, toots?"

"Wait, wha--"

First, his comment had caught Kate off guard. Then, Matt literally caught her. People would have been proud of her, though. She hadn't been ready to turn tail and run. Kate was getting better at whatever this was. It was a thing, though, and Kate?

Despite the blush and the brief moment of tension in her shoulders and jaw, this was good. This was okay. It was possible that it would all work out in the end.

She was going to do her best to stay on the positive side. Self-deprecating comments aside, Kate couldn't help her nerves and her own levels of self-doubt. Of just never being good enough. That simple gesture of Matt catching her chin did things to Kate, though. Like his compliments during their dinner date and rescuing her without a second thought.

Kate brushed her fingers against his jaw first before leaning in to kiss him. While not awkward, it was cautious, testing the new waters, before a mini crab apple pegged her in the shoulder.

Rubbing at it, Kate shook her head with a laugh. "I think they're jealous," she teased.

Oh. That was new. And not at all unwelcomed. In fact, Matt might go so far as to say he should have seen it coming. And it was nice. Really nice. And he might have just let it keep going for a bit but then he heard the thump, felt the shift of the fabric of her shirt, and he sighed.

"Whoever said apple picking was romantic has never been to Goodland," he complained in annoyance. Bending, he picked up the offensive little apple. "What do you have to say for yourself?" he asked, trying to pretend he wasn't scolding a fucking apple.

"She's hot!" the apple declared, and Matt couldn't help it. He burst out laughing.

"Okay, fair. I was going to throw it, but well, it's got good taste? Maybe we don't hit people we like from now on?"

"Yeah, why don't you see what Miss Lady over there can offer you." Taking the little apple from Matt, Kate gave it a gentle roll toward the other batch and gave a light snort. "...Did we just set two apples up for a date? Is that what we do now? I mean, they definitely make a decent pair."

Puns. They were doing puns now, too. At least Kate was even if she was exceptionally terrible at them. Or amazingly good at them. It was entirely up to the person on the receiving end, of course.

"I think it's supposed to be one of those quote romantic settings unquote." Kate had raised her hands to, indeed, make air quotes before catching herself. She gave herself a point for that. "I may be more of the sitting on the rooftop listening to the scanner sort of girl, though." Or watching reality television. That was always good to see someone else's dumpster fire on display rather than your own.

"Just as long as we take a break on the killer robots for a while. I can't afford to lose anymore inches off my hair." Kate found his hand again and gave it a light squeeze. Joking aside, it was clear she didn't want Matt getting hurt again to such a serious degree.

Matt was not doing puns. Matt never did puns, and if he did, they were an accident. Honest. "I'm just glad you're the only one witnessing this. Even if I can feel Foggy's judgment despite him not being here." No matter how long he'd been in Goodland, he absolutely still missed his best friend. At least this time they weren't separated because Matt had completely screwed things up between them. He was good at that.

The corners of his lips turned up as she stopped herself from making air quotes. Because he knew that's what she'd been about to do. She really was completely ridiculous and he really was still insanely attracted to her. Probably for the fact that she wanted to sit on rooftops and listen to scanners. "Aww, that was our first date. And honestly, probably many future dates."

It was, after all, her desire to do good in the world around her that had drawn him to her in the first place.

Lightly, his hand reached up, brushing through much shorter hair. "I don't know, I like it this length. Feels softer, even."
