Hugo & Colin
WHO: Colin Creevey & Hugo Weasley
WHAT: Watching the HP films.
WHERE: Hugo's bedroom
WHEN: Sunday
WARNINGS: Will mention character death
STATUS: Threading

Hugo, on one level, found it odd that he merely existed as a fictional character in some worlds. However, part of him also found it fitting that his role was nothing more than a footnote in his uncle's story. Hadn't that always been the way? He almost found the whole thing amusing. He did, after all, feel real. He breathed like everyone else. He was a real boy! Still, watching the films felt surreal, like he was watching some version of his family's lives. They got some things wrong, but the spirit of the story definitely remained. They were also infinitely more entertaining than the SparkNotes he forced himself to read. Bloody hell, he hated reading.

Colin watching with him proved a little problematic. He wasn't exactly in all the films, but there was a character based on him. Hugo was worried he'd have questions. Still, he wasn't going to tell him he couldn't watch with him. He turned to him when they finally reached the end of the final film. "So...what did you think?"

Colin wasn't one hundred percent sure that they were fictional, this could have been a muggleborn made documentary attempting to bridge the gap between worlds.  Or maybe it was a situation like Goodland where someone had gotten to meet Harry and somehow retained the information. Maybe they even thought they had created it themselves. Colin refused to think of himself as fictional when he was there, when his whole family existed outside of the scope of this movie. It didn't make sense that they would exist if they were all fictional.

At first, watching the movies had been nostalgic. He remembered all the silly, crazy things he'd done in his first year. He remembered taking Harry's picture and testing experiments for the Weasley twins so he would have coin to buy candy from the older students who went to Hogsmeade. He had been confused when Dennis never showed up, or when his name changed but it was a movie and they were actors. Movies were like that sometimes.

But as the story went on, Colin grew anxious. When the fights started and the muggleborn started getting rounded up, he remembered the nights in the tent-- hungry and cold and too scared to sleep. He fidgeted more and more as the movie played.

Honestly, Colin almost missed the shot of the dead teenager, Nigel, the Not-him-him. Colin's breath caught in his throat as he tried to process what that meant. He was just an actor. This was just a movie. He was shaking by the time he found his voice.

"But my brother, he's okay, right?" He wanted to ask if it was true, but he couldn't squeeze that part out. He knew that Nigel had seemed to be a composite of the two of them, and he had to make sure that at the end of the day, Dennis would be okay.

Hugo was so not comfortable with the conversation, but he was the only one there. He knew it would come up when he agreed for Colin to watch with him. "Dennis is fine," Hugo replied. He didn't know the man well, but his family kept in touch enough for him to know that much.

"Oh." Colin paused. If he hadn't died, if he had been fine, surely Hugo would have cleared this up. He would have said something reassuring about cinematic poetry, or the director bending the truth for a better shot, but the things left unsaid spoke volumes.

He couldn't help the gasp of breath that left his trembling lips as tears began to fall. He felt everything and he felt numb at the same time. "So, I've died?" He just... need the confirmation, even though he already knew it.

Hugo shifted his weight so he was cuddled next to Colin. He wrapped an arm around the boy's shoulders. "I'm sorry," he said softly. "Really sorry." It wasn't enough; Hugo knew that, but how did you comfort someone about his own death? "You were brave," he added. "My dad always says that. You wanted to fight."

Colin didn't know what else to do, and when Hugo put his arms around his shoulder, he leaned into him. Colin buried his head into Hugo's shoulder, taking a deep breath. He was trying to steady himself.

"I don't know what to say." Colin blurted out between tears. I just..." he wanted to pretend that he wouldn't change his mind knowing what he knew, he wanted to say that he would do it again. But would be? Colin didn't want to die. He thought about that DA coin that say on his dresser in his room, what would he do if it went off now?

It sunk in that he would never go home again. Never see his parents. Never go to Hogsmeade for a Butterbeer. He tried to stick in a breath to calm himself, but it just came out as a sob.

"I don't want to die."

Hugos' eyes filled with tears too. Damn. He hugged Colin tightly. He didn't know the boy well, but he knew the stories and he liked him from his short stint in the village too. "I know," he whispered. "But you've got here," he promised. "You can live here."

"Until I go home." Colin pouted. "Because everyone eventually goes home. Don't they?" He sighed. What sort of life would it be, without his family? He'd never wanted his mother so badly in his life.

"I should... be thankful I guess. But I just... I can't feel it."

"You don't have to feel any one way right now," Hugo reassured. "It is a lot to take in and this place is crazy to start..." He shrugged. "Some people have been here over a year. I've been here for months." He wasn't sure how many since he wasn't keeping track, but he knew it had definitely been months.

Colin was torn. On one hand, what was the point of doing anything if he were just going to die when he got home... but at the same time, if he was going to die when he got home, why wouldn't he do as much living while he could. He wanted to crawl into bed, and do everything all at once.

He pushed his palms across his face to push away his tears as he let out a breath. "I just.." Colin was struggling with the words, "I don't know how to deal with this. But... thanks, for being here with me."

Hugo nodded. He didn't know how to deal with it, either. "Sure," he agreed. "For as long as you need."
