It wasn't that sleep ever came easily to him, any more. But he hadn't shared a space with so many people since being in the army. It was amazing how easily you got used to having your own space. And though he'd told Pepper he preferred the warmer weather, in such a crowded space the air just felt a bit too heavy. By the lake he'd managed to find a spot to sit with his feet in the water, and it felt a hell of a lot better.
Steve wasn't too proud to admit he'd messaged Darcy because he was bored. But he'd also known she'd probably still be awake too, so he didn't feel too bad about it. She always seemed up for a chat, even if he couldn't quite keep up with the speed of her texts.
They'd had a rough day, again. No one he'd known all that well had been sent home this time, but it hurt to see a friend so hurt. And relieved as he was to have Bucky back, he wouldn't wish the feeling on anyone else. He sent his last message to her with a quiet laugh, setting his phone aside as he waited for her.
