This insomnia thing sucked ass. Maybe it was the sudden reduction in their numbers that triggered it. Maybe it was the humidity in the air. Maybe it was the way the rolled up mattresses in the bunk house seemed to haunt everyone. No matter the cause, sleep was hard to come by for Darcy that night, so when Steve texted her, she jumped at the chance to do something other than lay in her bed and stare at the ceiling.

In between replies, she (quietly) pulled her camp uniform back on, thankful that she'd mastered the whole changing-without-getting-undressed thing in middle school. It was too warm for socks and shoes, though, so she pulled her bright yellow shower flip flops out from under her bed and then slipped outside to join Steve.

It wasn't that sleep ever came easily to him, any more. But he hadn't shared a space with so many people since being in the army. It was amazing how easily you got used to having your own space. And though he'd told Pepper he preferred the warmer weather, in such a crowded space the air just felt a bit too heavy. By the lake he'd managed to find a spot to sit with his feet in the water, and it felt a hell of a lot better.

Steve wasn't too proud to admit he'd messaged Darcy because he was bored. But he'd also known she'd probably still be awake too, so he didn't feel too bad about it. She always seemed up for a chat, even if he couldn't quite keep up with the speed of her texts.

They'd had a rough day, again. No one he'd known all that well had been sent home this time, but it hurt to see a friend so hurt. And relieved as he was to have Bucky back, he wouldn't wish the feeling on anyone else. He sent his last message to her with a quiet laugh, setting his phone aside as he waited for her.
