TONY STARK
HAPPY HOGAN
May's arrival in Goodland brought up some things Tony was curious about. First, he was curious about Happy's friendship with the woman. Second, he wanted to know about the events Happy and Peter hinted about post Tony's death. He had the feeling Peter swept it under the rug to spare his feelings, but Tony felt he should know. He didn't want secrets with either his best friend or his kid. Furthermore, he thought it was a conversation better had over drinks so he invited Happy out for the night. They could grab some dinner and have some drinks, just the two of them.

"What do you mean, what am I going to do? I'm not going to do anything." Happy was pretty sure he had blown the whole thing in the aftermath of Peter's talk. Sure, he could have a second chance here, but he would have to play it much cooler than he had before. And what if May got one of those updates that Peter did? There was no reason to look pathetic twice. He took a bite of his dinner.

"But you like her," Tony pointed out. He finally settled down enough to eat some of his steak. Sure, he was being overbearing, but he was doing it because he wanted those he loved most to be as happy in Goodland as he was. "And, get this, she is living with us so you have the perfect excuse to get to know her all over again." He snapped his fingers. "We should bring dessert home for everyone. Come over."

"I don't know, Tony," Happy shook his head. "She just got here. And we're not even from the same point in time. And I don't know what I'm doing here. If I didn't impress her before, I'm certainly not going to cut it when I'm unemployed and living with two middle aged men and an alien who may or may not actually be some kind of god."

Tony held a hand up. "First, you work for me. You are hired. Second, you have no choice in your living arrangements." He leaned over to clamp his hand on Happy's arm. "Come on, are you sure she just wasn't scared maybe? Do we know her history since...ah, Ben?"

"Thanks, boss. But I do actually want to be contributing to something if my name's gonna be on the payroll." He looked down at Tony's hand on his arm and smiled just a little. "I don't think anything scares that woman. Except the usual parent things." Happy shrugged dismissively as if that didn't count.

"You people and wanting to contribute," Tony joked. "Fine, you can be security at SI. How does that sound?" He was determined to get his friend employed and confident enough for a lady friend.

"Hey, I could continue to ride your coattails here, or you could put me to work where we'll both benefit." Happy smiled broader now and returned to his dinner. He wasn't sure if Tony was ready to leave it at that, or if he would continue to press him on May. Or on what he knew about Peter's future.

Tony knew the future was a sensitive subject for people and he understood why; it had to be hard having knowledge others didn't. How much to share? He let them fall into comfortable silence for a few minutes while he took a few bites of his dinner. He washed his food down with his drink and finally said, "Joking aside, I do think you two would be good together. As for everything else...if you want to tell me, I can handle it."

"I'm not going to disagree with you." Happy shrugged, "She might." He wasn't over eager to spill about Quentin Beck and the other disgruntled Stark employees. He knew the guilt the other man would likely feel about the whole situation, and how it had been left to the high schooler to straighten everything out. "You really wanna know, even though there's nothing you can do about it, there or here?"

Tony paused. He was happy. He had his family and his friends and a life in Goodland. Still...

"I do," he admitted. "I want to do what I can for you and Peter."

Happy set down his fork, took a long drink from his glass, and then looked his friend in the eye. "Just let me preface all this with the fact that Peter is alright." Physically speaking anyway. He had yet to talk with him since he'd been outed by that Internet news quack, but the Peter here didn't have those memories yet. "A gang of disgruntled Stark Industries employees used your tech to create interdimensional boogie monsters and a superhero to defeat them. Tried to level a couple cities. Exploited Peter's loss to gain control of E.D.I.T.H. Put the kid through the wringer." There was more, but he stopped there to give Tony the chance to ask questions or drop some expletives.

Disgruntled Stark employees. Tony's jaw clenched. It could be any number of staff, really, but Tony prided himself on one thing - he and Pepper never disciplined or let an employee go without damn good reason. How dare they go after a kid. What the ---

"Who?" Tony demanded. "The fuck - E.D.I.T.H?" Tony guessed he left them to Peter. It made sense. Granted, it made sense for an older Peter and Tony was already chiding himself for it. Then again, without Tony---

His mind was going a million miles. The only thing he knew for sure? He was damn glad Happy was there for the kid when he couldn't be.

"Quentin Beck was the ringleader." That name alone should have cued Tony in to what sort of madness was at work. "Took his holographic framework to a whole new level. I think you'd have been impressed with what they came up with if you didn't want to kill them first."

Happy still wasn't entirely clear on Fury's uselessness during the whole affair. Or why none of the other Avengers had been free to give Peter a hand. For all he knew, it was some sort of test. Some hoops the one-eyed spy was making Peter jump through before he would bring him onto his crew. He could always ask Fury about it, but the guy still scared him a little.

"Peter pulled the plug on the whole thing. In a suit he made in the back of the jet." Happy smiled a little at the memory. In that moment, he had felt like Tony was there, and now thanks to some mysterious entity, he really was. "You'd be proud of him. I know that you are, but..." There was something different about a Peter with Tony and one without.

Happy's small smile calmed Tony down enough to focus on the last of the man's words. "I can see you are proud of him," Tony replied. His jaw slackened, if only because Happy and Peter were both in Goodland and safe. He kept reminding himself that everyone was okay even with fucking Beck and his idiot tribe. "We've come a long way from dodging phone calls, haven't we?" He laughed a little, although his heart was still beating too fast. He had a lot to process.

"He's a good kid," Happy shrugged, as if it was something he was admitting in spite of himself. "Now he's dodging Fury's calls." He wasn't sure if either of them saw it, how similar Tony and Peter were. Their brilliant mind. The urge to protect. The self-doubt. And their big hearts. "I'm glad he gets this time here with you." I hope he remembers it went unspoken.
