The Iceberg Lounge was bigger than most imagined, even those who could see its spotlights painting the sky and illuminating the magnificent building for all to see. It was not just a lounge. It was a casino, a bar, a resort hotel. It catered to a variety of tastes, and anything could be had for the right price. It was a respectable establishment, there for the enjoyment of those whose power or money could afford them an invitation.
Tonight, the wine was flowing, the music played, and laughter mixed with the din of talking as city officials, business leaders, community activists and the idle rich enjoyed an evening of celebration. No one really cared about the cause, and those who did were free to see the Ridgway’s Hawk, housed in an ornate cage of glass bars and on display in the main atrium.
Adjacent to the atrium was the lounge proper, where drinks were being served on an open bar, and a woman sang on stage of old lovers, sad days and lonely nights, the musical selection a cry for what many viewed as a simpler time. Her black hair and asian features played off a dress that looked as if it was sewn in with white diamonds, and her smile hinted of mystery and danger. She was accompanied by a jazz band, hand picked by Oz from the French Quarter, relocating them and their talents after the storm. Together they were billed in signs hanging about as 'Skylark and the Nightingales Down.'
Others were here to conduct business, maintain connections and network, or to simply drink and have a good time. The fact that both of Bruce Wayne's heirs were present for the evening drew an even larger crowd.
The proprietor of the establishment, Louis Oswald, made his rounds, and there were many rooms, nooks and crannies, all closed off for the party. No one ever doubted that the Oswald Family knew how to throw a party. They'd been doing it in one form or another for three generations.
The Actuary, Oswald's trusted right hand man, watched out of sight from the upper private lounge - Oz called it the 'Duck Blind' - as the crowd mingled, never far from the business at hand. He smiled thoughtfully; this would be a profitable night for Oz, especially if they could make the announcement of a partnership with Wayne Enterprises. The Penguin's star was in ascendance tonight.
Outside, the building's lights sparkled on seawater and crowded out the evening stars for attention. But even as the lounge's night life shone outward, shadows descended upon it.
