Severus Snape had never backed down from anything since he was six and his Da had…never mind.

There was no way in hell that he’d let Sirius sodding Black tell him who he was going to be friends with.

He’d deal with the devil or Lucius Malfoy—there was really no difference in Severus’ mind—as long as he could spend time talking to Remus Lupin, just sitting and breathing in that lovely, earthy scent.

“You do know what you’re asking me to do, don’t you?” Lucius asked.

“Yes. I want you to clear a path to Lupin for me.”

Lucius watched his protégé stalk Potter’s sickly friend and grimaced. Neither one was blessed with an abundance of charm or grace, yet there was something exotic about young Snape’s velvety voice and Lupin’s scarred innocence.

If he had his way, he would have made one scream and the other whimper. It didn’t matter much which one it was. Then he turned his head and saw the devil’s bargain he’d made sashaying across the room to simper at Severus and cause the idiot Gryffindor he desired to fade back into the woodwork.

Narcissa’s gambit only served to make Severus step around her.

“Fancy meeting you here, Lupin,” Severus said snidely, even as his eyes devoured Lupin’s seemingly fragile being.

“Trust you to think I was following you, Snape,” Remus said tiredly. He rubbed at his eyes and bit back a groan. “Sirius got an invitation to this and since I fit his robes, well…” He held out his arms. “Here I am.”

“I’d say Black’s absence is a delightful price to pay to have you here,” Severus said in a lower voice, sidling closer. “I would’ve sold my soul to have you to myself.”

Remus’ eyes threatened to roll out of his head.

Cutting Lupin from the common herd was harder than Severus had thought and if it weren’t for Lucius’ manipulations and machinations, he’d have had to work much harder at isolating the werewolf in a secluded corner.

Alone in the crowded Ministry ballroom, Severus pressed closer to Lupin, his nose quivering at the other man’s intoxicating scent.

“What in Merlin’s name are you doing, Snape?” Lupin hunched back into the corner.

“Sealing the pact with my own personal demon,” Severus mumbled as he leaned up to press his lips to Lupin’s.

Lupin’s scent mellowed and warmed as Severus pressed closer.

In a nearby corner, hidden behind a Notice Me Not charm, Lucius watched Severus Snape kiss Lupin and then be held close in Lupin’s arms.

He’d know it was a Faustian bargain, giving Snape what he wanted while it tore at him, but how could he resist that voice when Snape begged and schemed?

Neither one of the other wizards noticed Lucius’ Befuddlement spell cloaking them from the milling crowd. Lucius couldn’t keep his eyes off the two of them. Neither was remarkable, but together they were elemental, wild.

“No matter. Someday you’ll rue the day you dealt with this devil.”
