Remus Lupin’s trunk was packed and ready for the house-elves to move out of his rooms. He looked around, hoping he’d left something, anything that he could return for later. There was nothing, and he had so little to lose anyway.

“Professor Lupin?” Ron Weasley stood just outside his open door, shifting from foot to foot. “Eh, we’d like you come to the Burrow. Mum said it was all right, you know.” His earnest brown eyes stared into Remus’. When had the boy grown so tall?

“Weasley, Mr. Lupin has a home. Thank your parents.” Remus glared at Severus. “Please.”

Ron backed away, ears red. “Sorry, Sna—Professor. Mum offered is all,” he mumbled. “I’ll go now.” He turned away and disappeared into the darkness of the hall.

“Severus, that was not kind. He was just doing his mother’s bidding.” Remus stepped closer to his one-time lover and waited for his response.

“That boy has hormones and he was trying to get you into the perfidious clutches of the Weasley web.” Snape’s mouth twisted like he was sucking on a lemon. “I’ll not have it.”

Remus laughed, bitter at the irony of being wanted and driven away. Severus never changed.

Standing on the steps of Grimmauld Place, Remus rolled his shoulders, trying to ease the tense set of them. His shrunken trunk seemed to weigh a tonne even though he knew the magic made it lighter than a shoe.

“Open the door, Lupin.” Severus’ unexpected voice shocked Remus so that he almost fell off the stoop as he turned.

“Ronald Weasley may want you, but damned if I’ll let a pup have you.” Severus pushed past him and entered the house.

“You got me sacked.”

“I saved your hide. Now I want to stroke your ego.” Severus opened his arms.
