Summary: Hermione's thinking and Ron comes to keep her company - only, it's not the sort of company she expected. Loads of tension awaits those who read, but they're well rewarded in the end.
Everyone had settled into bed early, leaving Hermione alone with her thoughts and her journal for company. However, after only ten minutes, she had grown tired and weary of the contents found within the blue book. Here they were, stuck in the middle of a war and completely cut off from all comforts of their former life, and she found it ironic that people were having doodling contests. Of course, she would understand if it was a means to amuse them, but at the same time, it was further angering the Death Eaters and You-Know-Who. The irresponsibility had been grating on her nerves for awhile, but she hadn't made that aggravation public. The very last thing she needed was to argue over a piece of paper with someone about how they should be more mature and not agitate the Death Eaters. It almost seemed like they did want to get killed.
She closed her journal with a definitive sound and pushed it away from her. Pulling her notes and a book closer, however, she added another tally mark to a sheet of paper and below a long list of cities and towns, she added Venice, Italy. Since their very first night of running, she had kept a detailed list of where they had been in invisible ink that only appeared to her. The number grew rapidly at first, but as the war continued to mull on, they stayed at places longer than a night or two until they were eventually comfortable staying for at least a week at a time. Switzerland had been the longest, mostly because Ginny was healing, but also because it had been a place where they could enjoy themselves momentarily. They had even gone for a few swims in the lake behind the house they had occupied, and for a few moments, Hermione was able to distance herself from reality, join them, and pretend that they were on holiday.
Sighing, she rubbed her forehead and closed her eyes for a minute. Briefly, she allowed herself to think of her parents and Crookshanks. The latter she missed terribly on nights when she had nothing to do but read over the notes she had revised over and over for the past four years. At least he would be there to trample on the pieces of parchment and steal her attention for several minutes so she could take a break and talk to someone. He was a good cat and she had no doubt that he was diligently looking after her parents in Australia like she had asked him too. He might be a pain sometimes, especially to Ron (at which though she gave a bit of a smile), but he truly meant well.
Opening her eyes again, she shook her head to clear her thoughts so she wouldn't get upset. Putting the piece of parchment with the invisible ink aside, she read over the notes on the Slytherin Locket, memorising what it looked like again and reading over the plans they had devised so far on how they were going to get into the Ministry. It was definitely going to be a tricky situation and Hermione felt like they couldn't plan enough; no matter what they decided or which way they turned, there was going to be complications and things that would arise that they least expected.
It was impossible.
"No, it's not," she muttered to herself, scribbling a rough sketch of the Atrium and the bits of the Ministry she had seen in the past. It wasn't much and she was going to need Ron and Ginny to help fill in the missing pieces, but at least the diagram would help them visualize just where they were going. The only problem, however, was that they didn't know where they were going - they had no idea where Umbridge's office was.
"This is next to impossible," she muttered again, conceding partial defeat as she stared at the drawing. If only the Marauders had made a map of the Ministry like they had done with Hogwarts. That would have made things infinitely easier.
