Fic: Strong at the Broken Places
Title:Strong at the Broken Places
Author: [info]joanwilder
Giftee:[info]veridian_dair
Word Count:24,000+
Rating:NC-17
Pairing:Harry/Severus
Warnings:None
Genres:Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Romance
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Summary: After the war, both Snape and Harry have the chance to start over again…more than once. The choice is whether to go it alone or with each other.
Author's Notes:To my recipient: here's a helping of hurt/comfort, angst, Snape saving Harry again, plot, and a few other things you wanted that I'll not mention so you'll be surprised. Some events in this story were inspired by the film, 'An Affair to Remember,' with one dialogue line taken directly from it. My gratitude to my equally anonymous beta reader, who inspires, exhorts, and gently corrects.

I don't understand... I've read this story, before. I loved it. Why didn't I comment? And now I don't remember it well enough to say anything specific.

I loved the story - I remember the movie, An affair to remember, and you made good use of the plot. Excellent work.

It was fun, playing with the movie and making it 'fit.' Thanks for reading, and for taking the time to let me know you did.

Sod the hypothetical. Do you want to share a shell or not?

WAAAH! What a wonderful story! Perfectly titled and just about as heart-stoppingly romantic as anyone could ask for. You have a wonderful ability to draw perfectly clear pictures with your details, and your style, as always, is as clear as glass. Beautiful work! *loves*

Awww, thanks, Veni. I had a bit of help from the movie, but it's such a delicious scenario, I couldn't resist, esp since Veridian wanted h/c.

I stayed up last night to read this so I wouldn't have any interruptions, and I'm so glad I did.
I'm still trying to put all my words together, but just know that this is such a masterfully woven story, and I was so moved by it.
Damaged, pulled apart and woven back together - Snarry at its best.

This might be an odd section to quote, but it touched me, and I'll forever remember this image when I think about this fic in the future:

The place and the pipe and the warmth all combined to fill him with a sudden, intense emotion that lasted long enough to make his eyes burn.
He had no idea how long he sat there, but when he finally stood to leave, he was slightly stiff and sore. Patting the marble that was cool now, he murmured, "I'm back, Albus."

Lovely work, sweetie. Be very proud of this. *hugs*

Awww, I'm so honored that you stayed up and read it, when you have that luscious Mr Dacro to snuggle up to.

Of course, I had the movie to help me, but I really do think that Snape would have some sort of delayed grief issue, and I don't think he would've given in to it until he was free from all responsibility. Strong until no one needed him to be strong, then he'd unravel a bit, is my take on him.

So glad you liked it, and 'Snarry at its best' coming from you means a great deal. * hugs *

heh. I couldn't bear to share my cold/cough germs with him while he was curled up and snoring so nicely in tandem with Shine. :)

I can see Snape like that too. Too may years concealing his emotions to fall apart when he has a job to do. Watching him smoking a pipe, taking care of the bees or tucking pictures away while remembering Albus - it's such a nice private image. Something I'm sure he'd never let us Muggles observe outside of fanfic. :D

Well, I meant every word. I know I will save this and travel away to the sea with Harry and Severus whenever I need a moment of escape in the future. *more hugs*

Lovely story. My favorite lines:
"I've not managed to frighten him in all the years I've known him. And believe me, I tried my best," he said dryly.
=====
"Tell me what you're obsessing over. How you hate what you've lost. Tell me what you lost. Tell me what you cry over. And don't tell me that you don't. I know you too well. I could probably guess at most of this, but you need to tell me."
=====
"I'm looking forward to finally teaching you something useful."
=====
"I guess I'm happy when I don't want to be anywhere else but where I am."
=====
"Would you like to share a shell or not?"

and, apparently, in my excitement, I fail at posting comments.

First of all, I loved the imagery in it. You put together such beautiful scenes...I could see them all playing out in perfect detail.

And, the HC aspect...first Harry caring for Snape and then their roles being reversed. I think you've created a gorgeous story. I was touched by the growth and development, not only in their relationship but in them as individuals.

This story will stay with me for a long time. I wish I had your eloquence so I could express my appreciation properly. Thank you so much for sharing.

Also, randomly, I've been meaning to friend. Do you mind if I do?

Veridian Dair wanted H/C, and the movie association certainly lent itself to that. I'm pleased to hear you found the development of their relationship believable; that's always a concern when writing this pairing. I think you expressed yourself just fine. :)

Sure, and I'll friend you too!

Thank you. I forgot about this story. Strange that it comes up, because I was just thinking about Sue Monk Kidd's book, "The Secret Life of Bees". For this fic I did a lot of bee research (I'm really afraid of them), and her book made me sad that I can't shed that fear of them.
