CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 17 - Leela_cat!
Your Name: leela_cat in LJ and IJ
Your Team: Phoenix
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
For the most part, I think canon is what is in the seven Harry Potter books. After the books were published, JKR can say what she likes, but I don't consider her comments (no matter how interesting) to be canon.
Since I came from television fandoms -- where canon is not only subject to major interpretation, but also onscreen contradiction -- I am pretty flexible about canon. I find the pieces that are important to my story and work from there.
For some pieces of canon, like that bloody epilogue, I put on my fanfic blinders and write away.
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
I think everything I've read has influenced my writing one way or another. I don't think that there's one story or writer I could point to and say "that one did it".
3. What element(s) about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
The tension that thrums between them, along that fine line between love and hate. In some ways, their backgrounds are so similar and yet they're coming at each other from very different places. Some of their expectations and assumptions about each other are so set and so completely wrong.
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
Aside from the obvious use in the Shrieking Shack? Potions ingredients, I'm sure. Can't you just see him sidling sideways during meetings in Dumbledore's office, scooping up ash from Fawkes' perch after every death/regeneration and checking for feathers during a moult?
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
Characterisation and dialogue, I think, with a minor in plotting. You'd be better off asking someone else though. I'm notoriously bad about pimping my writing.
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
Writing too much or too little. I can't count the number of times that a beta has sent back a draft with a note telling me either to delete the first x number of pages, or to add x number of pages because there wasn't enough information for a plot point to make sense.
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
Yes, but not in HP. I've written fanfic and articles with my partner, especially when we were living in separate countries.
I don't know that we had a specific process. For fanfic, it usually started with a conversation about the characters and then one of us saying "want to write about...". Although one story in XF, started with a horrid weekend we spent in the Motel 6 near SeaTac Airport. It was so awful that we decided the only way to exorcise the experience was to inflict it on our favourite pairing. For that story, we each took sections and responsibility for one character's voice.
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
I didn't start writing HP fanfic until after canon was complete. Then again, I don't have any problems going outside of canon if the story demands it.
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
Everything. Seriously. You can't have enough of a good thing.
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
Somewhere between blitheringly terrified and astoundingly excited. And seriously honoured ... have you seen the list of writers on these teams? They're amazing.
Thank you, leela_cat!
