CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 3 - Iulia Linnea!
Today we counter with Team Phoenix Captain - Iulia Linnea!
Your Name: iulia_linnea

Your Team: Team Phoenix! *\O/*
1. 'Canon compliant' is a hot button topic in Harry Potter fandom (thanks to all the 'After-Book Specials' JKR is hosting). What is your definition?
HP canon begins and ends with the source texts. While I sometimes find it interesting to hear what Rowling has to say about her characters and universe, I don't feel compelled to incorporate her every supplemental comment into the understanding of the Potterverse I've gleaned by reading her series.
In my writing, then, canon compliance primarily takes the form of familiar characterization, but I also allow for reasonable extrapolations from the canonical universe—such as new shops, spells, and the like—and for the logical personal development of the characters as they age.
I'm not a slave to canon; the entire point of writing HP fanfic, for me, is to explore Rowling's universe and expand upon it in ways that interest me and, therefore, I hope, ways that will intrigue the fen who read my stories. Writing fanfic is, in part, my way of responding to the source text, and Rowling has given me much to comment upon; in the case of Severus Snape, she's also given me something to correct: no body, no funeral, no ghost, no portrait, no death—Snape lives!
2. Has fanfic influenced your writing? If yes, was it a particular story you can name for us?
Fanfic has influenced my writing in several ways. The most important one would have to be that it's taught me not to accept the ill-written, self-conscious, soft-core porn which I encountered as a young woman and aped as a beginning writer. Depictions of sex don't have to be soft and pretty; they can be rough and ugly—realistic and imperfect—and still be hot.
I couldn't possibly name all the stories (or authors) who have influenced me, so I won't try. I will say, however, that fanfic has done more than influence my writing: it's had a welcome influence on my personal life, as well, for which I'm profoundly grateful. There is nothing better than being part of an open-minded and welcoming community of writers to improve and broaden one's mind and talent.
3. What element about the relationship between Snape and Harry do you find most intriguing?
They can't help but feel fascination for each other. Canonically, I think this fascination is fueled by Severus' anger and Harry's suspicion, and the interest they take in each other becomes akin to a bond because they have some similar personality traits. In fanon, this bond easily Transfigures itself into unresolved sexual tension. Exploring and resolving that UST in fanfic is hugely compelling to me.
4. How would Severus Snape find your team mascot most useful?
Well, there is the not so little matter of that neck wound in need of Healing for him to consider . . . .
5. What would you consider your greatest strength in writing?
I think I have a decent ear for dialogue.
6. Is there something your beta(s) constantly catch you doing?
I'm a big fan of the long sentence, and my betae continue to tell me that no one speaks with semi-colons.
7. Have you ever collaborated/partnered with another author or artist? If yes, please describe it for us. If no, would you consider it?
In fandom, I've collaborated with other writers by RPing scenes and then putting them together as polished story posts, but I've never set out to "properly" write a fanfic with anyone. I honestly don't think that I'd enjoy doing that because, for me, writing a fanfic is about exploring my own interpretations; while I'm doing that, I'm not interested in anyone else's thoughts but my own. It's after I post a fanfic that I want to discuss the concepts upon which I touched in my story.
8. Now that canon is complete, do you find it more freeing or less when it comes to writing or enjoying fanfic/fanart?
It hasn't affected me either way because I've never rated an adherence to canon higher than my enjoyment of fanon, particularly because I don't believe it's possible for fanfic to be truly canonical.
9. In your opinion, what kind of kink/theme does fandom need more of?
I'd like to see more wall!sex. ;) I'd also enjoy reading about how Hogwarts (and all residing there, particularly the Slytherins, Neville, Luna, and Ginny) fared during Snape's tenure as Headmaster, and I'm desperate for Eileen!fic of any era. Oh! It would be great to see more fic featuring how the prejudices and politics of the wizard world affect goblins and the other, "lesser" races within it. In general, there were a lot of themes of this nature that Rowling touched upon but didn't deeply explore, and I want to read about all of them—especially as they relate to a *coughs* realistic depiction of life in the Potterverse.
But yeah, more wall!sex would be fabu in lieu of any of that serious stuff. ;)
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
I'm just as thrilled but more proud because my team made me captain. It's a privilege and an honor to be Team Phoenix's Chief Cheerleader. *\O/*
Thank you, iulia_linnea!
Stay tuned for more interviews!
