It's all about families

Characters: Harry, Regulus
Summary: Catching up and enjoying the quiet.

Harry appeared in front of Dreams of Egypt close to closing time, hoping to drag Regulus out for dinner and get a tour without disturbing his customers. He hadn't been to the new shop yet, waiting for Regulus to move past the initial opening stresses before dropping in. It was strange still, seeing Regulus at Serenus' house even though it had been a few weeks now, and Harry found himself visiting the family with less frequency, for fear of over-loading the very full household despite Serenus' reassurances. Between Tybalt's mother and grandmother and now Regulus, Serenus had more than enough hands to help with the twins.

Ever since Oliver and Faelan had talked, Harry had been feeling timid in general. Ron had been distant lately, and Hermione was constantly working. Regulus had found solace in Serenus' household and Harry still didn't know how to approach Gaius, who had been busy starting his own business. Now Faelan had his brother back in his life and Harry felt at loose ends. He recognized that he put too much stock in being needed, but a small part of his mind occasionally liked to torture him with doubts of his own existence outside of other people. Occasionally, he thought he needed a steady job, but then he thought about being tied down to a schedule again, like he was in the Voldemort years, and Harry gave that idea up quickly.

"Hello?" he called out, looking around the shop with curiosity and hoping his friend would answer.

"Hello!" Regulus stepped out of the stockroom, recognizing Harry's voice and greeting Harry warmly as he crossed the room. "Come in, come in. It is good to see you." He gestured to the display table with the magical samovar set up and running. "Have a seat. I will make us some tea, and you can tell me how you have been." He paused, giving Harry a questioning look. "Unless this is a business call, not a social call?"

Harry craned his neck around and was reminded of Sirius' loft room in the barn. There were several displays and pieces that echoed Harry's impression of Regulus, instead, but he still didn't feel ready to make any major additions to the house yet.

That feeling alone, made Harry knit his eyebrows in consternation. He should be ready. Even Faelan was moving on. "Social. In fact, I was hoping you were free for dinner after you close. But you can surely tempt me while the clock winds down," he said gamely.

"As it happens, I am indeed free," Regulus replied, moving to fetch a couple of cups and saucers and a stash of biscuits he kept under the counter. "Business is slow at the end of the day, so I let my assistants go a little early." He gestured to the displays before turning his attention to pouring the tea. "What do you think? Gaius did excellent work on the decor, don't you think?" he asked, handing a cup to Harry.

"Really?" Harry looked around again, noting a level of aesthetically pleasing colours and details that he doubted Regulus would have implemented on his own. "It looks great! Who knew the professor had it in him?"

He sipped his tea and hummed in pleasure at the complex blend. "I'm glad you two made it up, you know. I like Gaius." Harry's respect for the youngest Snape brother had increased in the days before Sirius died, and their shared grief secured Gaius' place in Harry's heart.

"So do I," Regulus replied, taking a seat and making himself comfortable. "He has been a good friend to me. One of many," he added, giving Harry a warm look. "I have been quite lucky of late, both in business and in my personal life." He sipped his tea and looked a question at Harry. "What about you? How are you faring these days? I notice you have not come to Azoth House as often lately."

"It's a little busy there these days," he said, ducking his head. "Too many brewers spoil the potion and all that."

Harry gave Regulus a shy, but warm smile of his own. It was good to know his absence had been noticed, but he felt a little guilty for it as well.

"Faelan's kept me busy lately. There's been a huge misunderstanding between us and his brother, Oliver Wood. Faelan thought his family didn't care about him, but Oliver told us that most of the family thought Faelan was dead." Harry paused, running his hand over the back of his neck. "Well, Oliver told us all that after we let him get a word in edge-wise. Before that there was just yelling and duels."

"That sounds familiar," Regulus said dryly, thinking about his childhood. Yelling and dueling had factored heavily into his early interactions with Sirius. "At least now Faelan knows he wasn't abandoned by his entire family. Has he reconciled with his brother or are they still at odds?" he asked. He paused and gave Harry a stern look before adding, "But do not think you are off the hook for that 'too many brewers' remark. We will get back to that."

"That's why I like you, Reg. You don't let me get away with anything," Harry sat back and tried to look casual, but he was anxious to avoid those particular insecurities for now. "But, yes, Faelan and Oliver are doing better. There's still some weirdness there, though. You wouldn't believe the misconceptions those two had -- until a couple days ago, Oliver thought Faelan was with me!"

Harry laughed, but only to cover the frustrated, confusing thoughts he'd been having since finding out what Oliver had assumed. Harry hadn't been with anyone long-term but Draco, who'd hurt him badly by exiting their relationship with sudden ruthlessness.

Since the alchemical ritual that turned Harry into a roaming spirit for a few months, he had thought he'd put the pain of that break-up behind him. But Oliver reminding Harry that he could be in a relationship only seemed to bring up all of Harry's lingering doubts about himself and romance. He wasn't even sure if Oliver had been approving of the idea of his being with Faelan, and it bothered Harry that it would matter to him either way.

"It is not a surprising assumption, given the two of you live together, although I do not think Faelan is a good match for you," Regulus replied, his tone pragmatic. "Which is not to say I dislike him, mind you," he added, taking a sip of tea. "But I think you need someone with a different temperament." He smiled slightly and raised one eyebrow, amused to find himself being on the opposite end of the type of conversations he'd been having with Serenus and Tybalt lately. "You should go out and find someone interesting. You are alone inside your head too much, if you ask me, and I can attest how problematic that can be."

Harry didn't share the mental math of his years under the cupboard and in training that made him realise he'd spent more time "in his head" than not. Hiding himself away was second nature become reality for him.

"I found someone interesting and he ended up hating me. 'Interesting' is not a temperament I'm willing to suffer through again." He faltered, knowing Regulus was right about him being alone too much, but unsure of what to do about it. "I wouldn't know how to begin seeing anyone. The only thing I really know about myself is that I don't want anyone like Draco, and I find older men incredibly sexy."

He said the last with the most outlandish leer and wink he could muster so that Regulus could be in no doubt of the piss being taken out of him.

Regulus rolled his eyes and smiled. "Frankly, I think you would do well with someone older. If you ask me, you do not need anyone your own age, much less younger. You have experienced too much, and you are more than your chronological age would suggest," he said, leaning back comfortably in his chair. "As for how to meet someone, you might try places where you think you might meet someone who suits you, which means clubs and bars are out of the question."

Then he fixed Harry with a half-wicked, half-haughty look. "I would volunteer, but I am already in love with a much younger man. One who is, in fact, still in diapers. Fortunately, he loves me despite our age and toilet-training differences."

It hadn't even occurred to Harry to go looking for someone. His choices had always been disastrous, and finding someone who wanted to be with just Harry and not Harry Potter always seemed doubtful at best.

"I have a younger woman of my own on the side, but she's out of that dead-sexy diaper stage, so, I agree, it's time to move on."

Harry gave Regulus a frank look and asked, "Where are you looking?"

"Me?" Regulus blinked, surprised by the question, and he shook his head. "I am not looking. Not that Tybalt and Serenus are not encouraging me," he said wryly. "However, I am not quite ready to look yet. I have had - ah - issues with my mojo, as Serenus calls it, that I am still trying to sort out."

Harry laughed. "Is that what they call it? What makes you think my mojo is alive and well?"

Ever since Oliver had made Harry think about seeing someone again, he'd been engulfed by thoughts of Draco. He could think of far better ways to spend his time than brooding over that society-climbing prat. Who'd used him and loved him in equal measure. And then left. And used their magical bond to hurt him by having rough group sex. "What makes you think I'm ready for that again," he moaned out-loud.

"Because whatever you went through with Draco, it does not have to be like that again," Regulus replied firmly. "You can find someone different, and the experience will be different. Better." He leaned his chin in his hand and regarded Harry thoughtfully. "I do understand your reticence. Thanks to Bellatrix, I have issues that I doubt I will ever fully move past, but neither do I intend to let her control me. Are you going to allow Draco to continue controlling you?"

Harry nodded reflectively. "No, I suppose not. Although every time I even think about dating, the little blond weasel's face pops up in my head. I still don't know why he left! He didn't even give me a chance-"

Slumping back in his chair after nearly coming out of it, Harry huffed, blowing his overly long bangs out of his face. "I'm done letting him control me, but he still messes with my head."

"Which is another form of control," Regulus pointed out, sipping his tea calmly. It was nice not to be on the receiving end of one of these conversations for once. "You may not be able to move past him completely, but you can put him far enough behind you that you cannot see or hear him any longer. Then you will be able to find someone who will not treat you the same way."

"Guess I'll have to try since you and Faelan are unavailable," he said with a lightness he didn't feel. Draco had been inside his head, forever closing a door just ahead of him for too long.

"I think it is high time you did," Regulus said with a firm nod. "It is also time for you to start visiting Azoth House again as you used to do. You know Serenus considers 'the more the merrier' to be a lifestyle choice rather than a proverb, so you needn't worry about anyone there feeling overcrowded."

"I know, but..." Harry laughed softly. "You guys really click, did you know that? Serenus makes everything look so effortless. And sometimes-"

He swallowed another sip of tea, reconsidering his next words, but deciding he felt safe enough opening up further for Regulus. "As much as I want a family of my own, I don't want anyone to think that I'm trying to steal theirs. Or fit into one where I'm not welcome on that level."

"Granted, I have little experience with a relatively normal, healthy family," Regulus said thoughtfully, "but it seems to me that you needn't worry about such things." He finished his tea and poured himself another cup, thinking about the dynamics of his new living arrangements. "I cannot see anyone in Serenus' family thinking you are attempting to steal their family or that you are not welcome. I realize you do not get on well with Severus, but it isn't as if you are attempting to spend time at the manor. Serenus' household is quite different. He welcomes everyone." He smiled wryly. "Even former Death Eaters who tried to use him as a replacement for his brother."

Harry sat forward suddenly, remembering Serenus talking about his brief flirtation with Regulus. "Serenus is a saint! He never seems to get caught in the middle, even when that's exactly where he is."

Gryffindor that he was, Harry decided he'd better quit worrying about what the others thought of him and just enjoy the hospitality that Serenus so willingly offered. "I guess as long as I don't have to endure Snape, I could come around more often."

"It has been good for me," Regulus said simply. "I think it would be good for you too." He opted to ignore the slur against Severus; it was hardly the first time he had been in a position of liking someone a friend of his disliked, after all.

"I think I'd move in just about anywhere if Faelan wasn't at the Loft." When he finished, Harry blinked, surprised at his own words. "But I couldn't leave him alone. I don't want to," he followed quickly.

"That is very commendable of you," Regulus replied, nodding. "Although if Faelan is reunited with his family, your options may open up. Then again..." He inclined his head, gazing at Harry speculatively. "I imagine it is comforting, too, having two familiar touchstones in both Faelan and Haven's Loft."

"I love the place, but right now-" Harry thought about the house and the hills and fields around them, the wrap-around porch, Starless and the garden outside the back door. "Parts of it are still alive while others- You know. It doesn't feel whole anymore. But I think it will again someday."

"No doubt it will," Regulus agreed. "You could bring in someone of your own and fill the empty spots. It will never be the same, I imagine, but it can be different and better. In the meantime, you have a refuge at Azoth House to tide you over when you need the comfort of people and affection around you."

"My favourite!" he said, and then flicked his wand to check the time. As he bounced up, Harry said, "I'm feeling pretty hungry, too, and it's after closing. Want to show me how you close this place up? I'll help. And come back later to buy something expensive," he promised in all seriousness.

Rising to his feet, Regulus nodded and drew his wand, flicking it at the sign on the door, which flipped to read 'closed'. "Come along, then, and I'll put you to work. It will not take long, and then we can go and let Serenus feed you."

With that, he showed Harry what needed to be straightened and tidied while he took care of the till. He was rather hungry as well, and he was ready to return to Azoth House. To return home.
