WHO: Danny and Kate
WHAT: Hanging out, potential door adventure, who knows
WHERE: Kate's place
WHEN: Today
RATING: PG (?)

Danny knocked lightly on the door. He wasn't so foolish now as to fully expect Kate to be awake. He woke early himself, before sunrise making his trek down to the clearing to practice. The sun had risen now, though, and he was dressed casually in his somewhat ill-fitting clothes. He thought it not unreasonable to expect Kate up now. Maybe eating breakfast. Making coffee. Doing the general little things to imbue this life with something close to normalcy. He knocked again.

"I come bearing gifts," he called. "Or. Well. At least potential gifts. I mean, breakfast? We could - try to get something together if you aren't busy?"

"I could fight to the death for a good breakfast," Danny mused as he pushed to his feet. He followed Kate, his gait an easy lope. Relaxed. Content. Hungry as he was, he was enjoying being around Kate and the ease with which the banter came. He hummed as he slid out the door, and began to follow her towards the Doors.

Whatever those Doors were.

"Portals usually have something they emanate from, don't they?" He mused. "I knew of one that held the door to the place I grew up open. Had to destroy it... the guy opening it didn't have the best intentions. Would've been nice to have that now, though." He raised his shoulders in an idle shrug. "Of course, if they need me in K'un Lun I guess they'd be able to find me and bring me there anyway. They've done that before."

Not the most reassuring thought, that at any moment he could be yeeted into another dimension. But there it was.

Kate snorted. "Depends on the day, really. I'm not looking to get my ass kicked today." She could hold her own, for sure, but Kate often came home wrecked. She wasn't looking forward to bandages today.

"I dunno, I'm not all science-y." Kate spoke as they walked. She walked with purpose: get to breakfast asap. The sooner they got to the doors, the sooner they'd be eating. "Sounds like you know a lot more about portals than I do."

She listened and nodded. "Funny how things turn out the way they want them."

"Are you looking for it most days?" Danny asked, eyebrows raised. He pointedly looked her up and down, and gave a small sharp exhale. "Didn't strike me as the type... I'll have to keep an eye on you."

He matched her pace, but still looked overall calm. It was nice, getting the day started as he had. He felt more in tune with his chi and the world at large around him. He cast her a sidelong glance.

"It's not really science-y. More mystical...ly. You know. Magic and stuff. Or something near it." He raised his shoulders in a shrug. "I don't question it too much. And I mean. I agreed to do things the way they wanted them. It's the only way it could've been."

He slid his hands in his pockets all the same.

"I mean, it was destiny. Fate. All that. You don't have much of a say in it. Sometimes your life is kinda chosen for you."

Kate caught him looking her up and down and raised an eyebrow. It didn't feel like a leer she might have had from other kinds of men--it was more appraising than sexual. That was refreshing. She shrugged one shoulder gently. "Some days. I'll make sure to put on a good show, then." She gave him a wink.

"You just mentioned mystical, magic, destiny, and fate in as many breaths." It was interesting. This place breeded that kind of talk, didn't it? "I don't think my life is ever chosen for me."

An appraisal, but not a leer. He'd made no lewd suggestions to her, simply joked in a less than subtle way. His smile was sheepish, a touch self-degrading. A blush lit his cheeks as he looked down at the road before them rather than meet her gaze.

"Not chosen for you?" He asked. On this topic, at least, he felt confident. "I know mine was chosen for me. But. Maybe it's different across cultures. Maybe you make your own destiny? It's a romantic thought, at least. I know everyone has different views on this stuff."

"I dunno I'm pretty stubborn. I'd probably grind my heels into the ground and refuse to budge if someone tried to tell me who to be or what to do." Kate smiled sheepishly. She knew that stubbornness wasn't exactly a virtue, but it meant she could be who she was, and not what other people wanted her to be.

"So, who chose your destiny for you?" She asked, then held open the door so he could enter first. The Doors were down the hall. She motioned for him to lead the way.

That was an interesting question. Who chose his destiny? He couldn't name a single person, it would be like trying to isolate one bit of water in a raging river. He scratched at his chin as he considered, and idly thought that he could also probably use a shave. Hm.

"It isn't so much someone choosing," he finally said. "It's more just- the Way. This is the Way it was. I was always Iron Fist, before the trials, before the dragon, before I even set foot in K'un Lun that was already laid out before me. Before my father... I mean. It's just the way things are." He looked at her sideways. "Which probably doesn't make sense. This uh - this is just... things."

He ducked through the door, and looked at the hallway questioningly. He looked back to her, but then began down the hall. He might as well go first.

"It would be like trying to decide if you were always going to be a hero or if something in particular made that path... open to you. If circumstances had to happen, or if... I don't know. Everything has its place, I guess. Even you and I here - that's part of it."

Kate didn’t understand a lot of what he was talking about. He’d talked a bit about Iron Fist, so she recognized that part. But some of the other stuff was way over her head. She nodded, though. So they had different opinions on destiny and that kind of thing? No big deal.

She stopped in front of the first Door, motioning for him to stop with her.

“You and I, huh?” A smirk crossed her lips as she turned to him. “We’re in the right place? This is destiny?” Okay, maybe she was flirting. A little.

She reached forward and opened the Door. It opened to what looked like a 1950’s diner—maybe the bathroom of the diner? Kate’s smirk turned into a full on smile. “Maybe this is the right place.”
