WHO: Danny and Kate
WHAT: Hanging out, potential door adventure, who knows
WHERE: Kate's place
WHEN: Today
RATING: PG (?)

Danny knocked lightly on the door. He wasn't so foolish now as to fully expect Kate to be awake. He woke early himself, before sunrise making his trek down to the clearing to practice. The sun had risen now, though, and he was dressed casually in his somewhat ill-fitting clothes. He thought it not unreasonable to expect Kate up now. Maybe eating breakfast. Making coffee. Doing the general little things to imbue this life with something close to normalcy. He knocked again.

"I come bearing gifts," he called. "Or. Well. At least potential gifts. I mean, breakfast? We could - try to get something together if you aren't busy?"

Kate was still in her pajamas, coffee cup clutched between both hands. She sat at the tiny, kitchen table, watching the brown liquid as it slowly dripped down into the carafe in her coffee maker, willing it to drip faster. Drip faster, goddamnit.

Then there came a knock at the door. At first, she wasn't sure if it was really a knock, or just a phantom of her sleep-addled brain. But then there was another knock, and a voice on the other side of the door.

She padded to the door and pulled it open, clad in flannel pajama pants, a hoodie, and a pair of mismatched socks.

"What kind of breakfast?"

Danny paused for a moment as he took in the sight. Sleep-addled Kate, pyjama clad, cagey. For a halting moment he was reminded of breakfasts in bed with Misty. Orange juice and fig newtons, the lazy sound of rain on the windows. Something twisted in his chest; he pushed the thought away and offered her a slightly crooked smile.

"Whatever we can find, that's generally the menu, isn't it?" Danny asked. "And, you know, getting to share it with me is a bonus."

The flirt wasn't exactly skilled, more shy than practiced. He raised his shoulders in a small shrug, and looked past her. Coffee. He could smell coffee.

"Any chance you got some tea?"

Kate gave a little snort at the flirt. She smiled and shook her head a little, then pushed the door the rest of the way open so he could come in, and turned to head back to the coffee machine.

"Tea? Really?" She gave a little sigh and opened the cupboard, setting her coffee mug down so she could dig around for a box. "I might have something. Like, Lipton, or something."

She moved one of the cans of coffee aside and gave a squeaked, "aha!" and pulled out a box of teabags. "I have no idea why this was in there."

Danny padded in after her with a far softer smile. He appreciated the lack of rebuke, the way she searched for tea even while questioning his choice. He felt at home - a rare enough feeling for someone such as himself.

"I didn't wake you up, did I?" He asked as he followed her into the kitchen. He filled the kettle without being asked to, and set it on the burner. He turned then, leaning against the counter to watch her get a mug.

"In K'un Lun one of the earliest things I was taught was to pour tea blindfolded. You can hear the temperature of the water, how full the mug becomes. I probably still remember how..." He raised his shoulder in a small shrug as he cast the memory away. "Coffee just never quite - I drink it with too much cream. Better to stick with tea, and suffer your judgement, Kate."

He nudged her gently, a small tap of his shoe to her calf.

"Even though you wound me with it. So deeply."

"What? Pssh, naw." Kate shook her head a little, though her attire and her bed-head hairdoo told a completely different story. "I've been up for ho-o-ours," she added, yawning half-way through the word.

She held out a second mug to him, thankful both were clean. She only had two of them, and Clint came over sometimes, so she had to wash them fairly frequently.

Her nose crinkled. "Cream." . She gave a little smirk. "You're the one who wounds yourself with the cream in your coffee. No no, I like it black. Black like my soul." . An obvious joke.

Kate reached forward to pour herself some coffee from the machine now it was finished dripping.

Danny raised an eyebrow. She certainly looked as if she hadn't been up long. He wouldn't discount her denial, however. Not quite yet. He wrinkled his nose, but yawned after he did. Contagious, those things. He slowly dragged his fingers through his hair, and took the mug in his other hand.

He hip checked her as he went to pour the water into his mug. Contact came easily to him, was something he sought without thinking about it. He rolled his eyes, and idly dunked the bag into the water as he watched her pour coffee.

"Black as midnight on a moonless night," he quoted with a chuckle. "I know, I know. It's just - bitter. Or too sweet when people add things to it. I don't know. I know some stuff I like others can't stand, so. Though I guess butter tea isn't really popular in Manhattan."

His smile turned small, his gaze warm as he let the tea steep.

"Thank you for having me over, Kate. I really appreciate the company."

"Exactly." Kate finished pouring the coffee and put the carafe back into the machine. She brought her mug to her nose and closed her eyes as she breathed in the scent. It smelled so good. Just the smell was waking her up.

"I dunno what butter tea is but it sounds disgusting." She spoke without opening her eyes, then sipped from her mug and practically burned her mouth, but it was worth it.

Finally, her eyes opened. "Well, I didn't invite you, you know." She teased, breaking into a grin. "You just showed up. Has anyone told you you're like a bad penny?"

"If we ever get back..." Danny gestured vaguely. "And if I can find yak milk, you can try it sometime. It isn't disgusting. Just an acquired taste. Like uh, coffee."

He nodded firmly. Maybe he could convince himself of it if he kept it up. Maybe she'd believe him. He looked at her, one eyebrow rose as she teased. Bad penny? He couldn't hide his confusion from her all that well.

"I - no, nobody's told me that. What does it mean? I thought after the dumplings when you said we could visit, that you might want to again..." His voice trailed off as his cheeks colored. "I - heard that wrong, didn't I?"

Kate almost snorted. Almost. Because yak milk? No, she'd pass. Hard pass. She didn't even like goat cheese. Weird, because drinking cow milk? Yeah, that was normal. Milk from any other lactating animal just felt wrong somehow.

"Danny, relax," Kate said, grinning at his awkwardness. "It's a joke. The bad penny is the one you can't ever get rid of. You've never heard of a bad penny?" She shook her head and set her coffee mug down on the counter, now drained of most of the liquid.

"I did say we should hang out again and I meant it. Just lemme go get dressed and we can figure out what to do."

"I'm relaxed," Danny protested just a bit too loudly. He huffed, but listened as she explained. A bad penny. Why would you want to get rid of a penny? Didn't people want pennies, money of all kinds? He looked at her, confusion there, however hard he tried to hide it.

"I'll wait?" He asked. Definitely a question. He looked back at the tea as he indeed did wait. He moved to sit at the table, pondering over the phrase again. Bad penny. Weird. He was never going to understand this, was he?

Kate couldn't help but smirk a little at his indignant huff. She shook her head as she headed back toward her bedroom, then closed the door behind herself so she could get dressed in privacy.

But she called through the door.

"What's our adventure today? Besides breakfast. You promised me breakfast and I'm holding you to that."

Danny sat and sipped his tea. He let his gaze roam over the kitchen curiously. The place looked lived in, far more like a home than his own place managed. He wondered if she'd gone through the Doors, or if she just had a bit of an eye for making a place her on. It would be inappropriate to ask, he thought. He took another sip, and glanced up at the sound of her voice.

"What would you like?" He replied. "I wasn't - entirely sure what you'd be wanting to do. Just, you know, anything."

He wasn't even certain how much there was to do.

"We could go for a hike?"

Right. Ask the city girl to go on a hike. Great idea.

A hike? Kate frowned a little as she selected one of her t-shirts from the closet. She wasn't sure she wanted to go hiking. She might if it'd make him happy... but maybe they could try something else?

She came out of the bedroom a moment later, wearing jeans and a David Bowie t-shirt. She carried a pair of black, low-top Converse and socks in one hand and reached for her coffee much with the other.

"Have you been through the Doors yet?"

"No." Danny replied truthfully. "I thought that maybe we could get breakfast through them. If that's how they work, I mean. Something... tasty. Would it be a guarantee, or?"

He looked up, blinking for a moment at the sight of her. Casual. Relaxed. His smile grew, and he raised his mug to gently clink against her own. He downed the remainder of his tea, and pushed to his feet.

"So, we go through the Doors and... that's the day?"

"Yeah, we can do that." Kate grinned, clinked her mug against his, and then gulped coffee from it before setting it down. She stole a seat opposite him at the table to put her shoes and socks on. Her hair was up in sloppy ponytail, sunglasses resting on the top of her head.

"So long as you're up for an adventure." She tied her shoes.

"Adventure? Of course." Danny boasted with ease as he relaxed back in his seat. He looked well rested, at least. There was a playful twist to his lips, a certain glint in his blue eyes as he regarded Kate. "I like a challenge, you know. And I need breakfast."

Yes, he had gone there with no idea how he would get breakfast... but lucky him, this seemed to be working out well. He rolled his shoulders back, and dragged his fingers through his curly blond so. He sniffed.

"So, we go through the Doors and... then what?" He asked as he looked at her. "We end up in another dimension? Fight dinosaurs?"

"Well, hopefully, we won't have to fight to the death to get breakfast... but you never know." She finished tying her shoes and climbed to her feet. The coffee was helping, and getting dressed made her feel a little more awake, too.

"Yup. Well, I don't want to fight dinosaurs. I figure we just open and close the door until we see something that looks civilized. Maybe a diner or something." ...paying for said breakfast might be easier said than done, but Kate wasn't really opposed to... y'know. The bad stuff.

Okay, so Kate was moral. Mostly. But she had to survive. People stole from the other dimensions all the time. She didn't have anything to trade, really, so they'd have to figure out something.

"Let's go. We'll figure it out when we get there." She gave him a smile, and opened the apartment door to let them both out.

"I could fight to the death for a good breakfast," Danny mused as he pushed to his feet. He followed Kate, his gait an easy lope. Relaxed. Content. Hungry as he was, he was enjoying being around Kate and the ease with which the banter came. He hummed as he slid out the door, and began to follow her towards the Doors.

Whatever those Doors were.

"Portals usually have something they emanate from, don't they?" He mused. "I knew of one that held the door to the place I grew up open. Had to destroy it... the guy opening it didn't have the best intentions. Would've been nice to have that now, though." He raised his shoulders in an idle shrug. "Of course, if they need me in K'un Lun I guess they'd be able to find me and bring me there anyway. They've done that before."

Not the most reassuring thought, that at any moment he could be yeeted into another dimension. But there it was.

Kate snorted. "Depends on the day, really. I'm not looking to get my ass kicked today." She could hold her own, for sure, but Kate often came home wrecked. She wasn't looking forward to bandages today.

"I dunno, I'm not all science-y." Kate spoke as they walked. She walked with purpose: get to breakfast asap. The sooner they got to the doors, the sooner they'd be eating. "Sounds like you know a lot more about portals than I do."

She listened and nodded. "Funny how things turn out the way they want them."

"Are you looking for it most days?" Danny asked, eyebrows raised. He pointedly looked her up and down, and gave a small sharp exhale. "Didn't strike me as the type... I'll have to keep an eye on you."

He matched her pace, but still looked overall calm. It was nice, getting the day started as he had. He felt more in tune with his chi and the world at large around him. He cast her a sidelong glance.

"It's not really science-y. More mystical...ly. You know. Magic and stuff. Or something near it." He raised his shoulders in a shrug. "I don't question it too much. And I mean. I agreed to do things the way they wanted them. It's the only way it could've been."

He slid his hands in his pockets all the same.

"I mean, it was destiny. Fate. All that. You don't have much of a say in it. Sometimes your life is kinda chosen for you."

Kate caught him looking her up and down and raised an eyebrow. It didn't feel like a leer she might have had from other kinds of men--it was more appraising than sexual. That was refreshing. She shrugged one shoulder gently. "Some days. I'll make sure to put on a good show, then." She gave him a wink.

"You just mentioned mystical, magic, destiny, and fate in as many breaths." It was interesting. This place breeded that kind of talk, didn't it? "I don't think my life is ever chosen for me."

An appraisal, but not a leer. He'd made no lewd suggestions to her, simply joked in a less than subtle way. His smile was sheepish, a touch self-degrading. A blush lit his cheeks as he looked down at the road before them rather than meet her gaze.

"Not chosen for you?" He asked. On this topic, at least, he felt confident. "I know mine was chosen for me. But. Maybe it's different across cultures. Maybe you make your own destiny? It's a romantic thought, at least. I know everyone has different views on this stuff."

"I dunno I'm pretty stubborn. I'd probably grind my heels into the ground and refuse to budge if someone tried to tell me who to be or what to do." Kate smiled sheepishly. She knew that stubbornness wasn't exactly a virtue, but it meant she could be who she was, and not what other people wanted her to be.

"So, who chose your destiny for you?" She asked, then held open the door so he could enter first. The Doors were down the hall. She motioned for him to lead the way.

That was an interesting question. Who chose his destiny? He couldn't name a single person, it would be like trying to isolate one bit of water in a raging river. He scratched at his chin as he considered, and idly thought that he could also probably use a shave. Hm.

"It isn't so much someone choosing," he finally said. "It's more just- the Way. This is the Way it was. I was always Iron Fist, before the trials, before the dragon, before I even set foot in K'un Lun that was already laid out before me. Before my father... I mean. It's just the way things are." He looked at her sideways. "Which probably doesn't make sense. This uh - this is just... things."

He ducked through the door, and looked at the hallway questioningly. He looked back to her, but then began down the hall. He might as well go first.

"It would be like trying to decide if you were always going to be a hero or if something in particular made that path... open to you. If circumstances had to happen, or if... I don't know. Everything has its place, I guess. Even you and I here - that's part of it."

Kate didn’t understand a lot of what he was talking about. He’d talked a bit about Iron Fist, so she recognized that part. But some of the other stuff was way over her head. She nodded, though. So they had different opinions on destiny and that kind of thing? No big deal.

She stopped in front of the first Door, motioning for him to stop with her.

“You and I, huh?” A smirk crossed her lips as she turned to him. “We’re in the right place? This is destiny?” Okay, maybe she was flirting. A little.

She reached forward and opened the Door. It opened to what looked like a 1950’s diner—maybe the bathroom of the diner? Kate’s smirk turned into a full on smile. “Maybe this is the right place.”
