Who: Barbara Gordon and John Crichton
Where: Around Town
When: Today
What: Maybe a dose of reality?

Things had been strange this month, first everyone getting sick, and the doors closing the way they had, and then the werewolf? Barbara almost felt like she was back at home again, it was the kind of craziness that she would have expected from Gotham. But not here in this quiet little town she had been stuck in for too long now.

But here she was - in her reality that included more super powered people than she was entirely comfortable with, and magic, and monsters, and so many things that defied explanation that she had stopped trying to quantify it a while back.

Today though, had seemed mostly normal so far, nothing too interesting had happened just yet, but she knew how quickly that could change and so she was ready for something to change if it happened.

The Library was a good place for a mostly normal sort of day though, so Barbara felt like chances were high things would be fine here. She was going through stacks of books when she heard someone come in. They were still working on bulking up the collection and making it what one could look at and agree it was a real library and not just their sad attempts at calling a handful of books a library. But it was a work in progress - which is what was so clearly on display when she heard someone come in. "Hi, lemme put these down." She called out.

"Hi," Say what you would about this place, but it was helping her work on her introduction skills if nothing else. There was always someone new to meet. "I'm Barbara, I don't think we've met yet."

"Oh man, really?" Barbra asked surprised when he told her that DVDs were still new for him. She barely remembered VHS and sure DVDs had been cool, but the world as all blu ray these days. "That's gotta be a trip. So like... did you have CDs yet?" She wondered with an eager grin, because this was kind of great and she'd love to hear a little bit more about where he was from.

"Yeah, yeah we've got DVD players, we've got some portable ones and every now and then we've done movie night and hooked it up to a projector and watched something together." She told him. It was kind of nice, it reminded her of some imagined simpler time, where people could just kind of come together for no other reason than just to hang out - like the sort of idealized version of the 50s you saw in movies minus the racism and sexism - mostly.

"No I get it, it's crazy." She nodded, because it was - she was fully aware that the majority of them had no choice about coming here. "I mean the sort of pocket dimension sort of thing seems right? As right as anything can in our current situation that is." She shrugged. "I haven't really had any experience with a wider dimension than my own, and we've only had really minimal exposure to aliens. Nothing quite like this. So this is all sort of outside my experience." It was probably what was most frustrating, she made plans, she figured things out and made a plan to fix it to set things right, but now - that didn't seem to be in the cards.

"I think it's more than just some little place we all slipped into though, there is some larger force at work, whether that is just some sort of ripple throughout the larger multiverse or a figurehead pulling the strings I'm not sure - but there is something outside our realities that made this happen." Of that much she was certain.

John made a face at the comment about CDs. Geeze, he wasn't that old. Sort of. "Uh...yeah, of course, we have CDs! They've been out like..ten? Fifteen years?" Since he was in college. Okay, maybe he was old Yikes. There was a scary thought.

Movie nights? That didn't sound half-bad. John liked the idea as he continued to browse the collection, though he was trying to figure out what some of these titles could be. Wait, was that a copy of Monty Python? He picked it up with a grin, reading overt he cover- god, he missed this! But as he was doing that, he was also theorizing. "Yeah, I was just thinking about how this place could exist physically- with the air and the water people need to breathe and survive. I noticed how the generator operates- brilliant engineering, actually, but the water system doesn't really make...since I can't figure out the power source."

Multiverse? John put the DCD down and looked at Barbara when she mentioned that bit. "What do you mean multiverse?"

"Oh," She huffed softly when he said they had CDs, "So you're not from the like the time of cassette tapes and 8-tracks?" Like she had pictured. What a let down. Okay that might have been a little dramatic, but she had been curious.

She let him browse for a little bit though, after all this had been the whole point of the library after all? Giving people a small kind of entertainment, even if it wasn't what any of them might have been used to. "I think the water is magic," She admitted, she hadn't looked too closely at it herself, a lot of it had been set up before she arrived, but that one - yeah magic seemed to be the answer there.

What she hadn't expected as his surprise at hearing about the multiverse, if he had gotten some of it she thought maybe he'd heard it all. "Um well we're all from different universes - well not all of us, some of them are from the same universe. But it seems like we've got proof here of the multiverse, alternate universes that exist concurrent with one another - similar but different." She explained. "You said you met Stark right? There are two of him."

John frowned and shook his head. "No, not exactly. I mean, we had 8-tracks when I was a kid..." Now she was just trying to make him feel old. "I left Earth in 1999. Right before the whole millennium turn around- how'd that go, by the way? No crash?"

He assumed no crash given the technology he'd seen in this place. Then she started talking about magic and he made a face, looking at her like she was crazy. Again, he really shouldn't be questioning things here. This was the guy that talked to voices in his head.

"I mean, I heard, but you're serious?" He hadn't really meant two of the same people yet, either, so it was going to take a lot to make John believe that anything he was seeing was real let alone something like that. "Two of them?" That was definitely going to be a lot to take in. "And they can exist here without something exploding?"

"I can't believe people actually thought there was going to be some kind of crash back then." She said groaning shaking her head with a laugh, "It was all fine, the clocks changed to 2000 and everything was fine and we had a whole lot of let down people who had stocked up on food and water and had no reason to use any of it." It was hard to believe that had been something people were scared of once, Barbara got it from a technical standpoint, but the idea that that kind of fear had somehow made it into the lives of every day people? That was the part that blew her mind.

"So it's been a while since you've been back then." Not that they were actually on earth now, it just kind of looked that way. Barbara knew that didn't mean anything of course.

Barbara got it of course, all of this was more than a little bit crazy, if it hadn't been Dick who explained it to her when she arrived she'd have doubted it all a lot longer than she had. "Well yeah, it's weird, but it's hard to deny the proof of it when it's right in front of you." She shrugged. "Well they were both here before I showed up and no one has exploded yet so I think it's probably okay, and I mean there are the three Peter's too - I don't think any of them have exploded either."

"I think maybe the separation from the larger multiverse makes all of the sort of potential paradox stuff okay? I'll be honest with you, this is not my area of expertise." She said as she shrugged.

John actually chuckled at the idea. "Yeah, that's what DK and I figured would happen. Good to hear it, though. Better than the whole world going to hell over a stupid computer error."

It sounded weird. All of it. Weirder than what he'd seen before, but he was just going to roll with it for now. What else could he do? As far as he could tell, no one was in immediate danger, so that was good.

"Yeah? Me either. Usually. Space travel, physics, real-world math, sure. Got that down." It seemed to be Tony Stark that had a better handle on this whole thing.

"Dunno what I'm supposed to do with myself while I'm here. If I'm not a scientist or surviving on a ship full of escaped convicts, I'm sorta lost." Of course John was joking. Sort of.

"That would have been really embarrassing for all the computer engineers of the world." She agreed with a laugh, but that had been fine and things continued to be fine as far as computers went - well mostly. As long as you didn't look too closely at what they were being used to do now.

She imagined that this whole kind of thing was probably not most people's expertise, there were only a few of them who could really get into the whole nuts and bolts of it all, and Barbara might be smart but she knew herself well enough to know that she was not one of those people.

"Space travel though," She said raising her eyebrows at that, "That's pretty cool." You know if you sort of overlooked the rest of his story and just focused on that one bit. "I always thought I'd be lucky to make it out of Gotham, if I'm being honest, and now here I am. In some other dimension." She huffed as she shrugged, it was a sad strange state of affairs, both the life she'd left as well as what she was doing now.

"I know what you mean," She agreed, "I kind of started helping out here by accident." She admitted, it was weird and not what she had thought she'd do with herself but a library had been a good idea and it gave her something to do. "People just kind of seem to be finding things to keep themselves busy, sometimes that's helping out in a big way, other times it's something smaller."

"Huh." Yeah, he knew a thing or two about keeping busy. Tinkering with technology a lot like Stark did but on a much smaller scale had been his thing back on Moya. Maybe there was something for that.

Then again, this tech was different. Way, way different.

"Yeah? I thought so," he said as he leaned his elbows on the counter, looking a bit distant for a moment then smirking and shaking his head. "Or I can just hold up in my room for a few weeks and binge-watch this library, try to catch up on my pop-culture quips."

That was an option, too. "Gotham? Never heard of it. Small town?"

It could be difficult figuring out something to do, especially with a lot of the sort of big things taken care of. She had felt a bit of that, but then the library had kind of fallen in her lap and well she was glad it had. Her other option was to have sat at home and spend her time missing her boys.

And that was pitiful even for her. So the library was a much better option.

"You could do that," She agreed with a laugh, "I think there's probably a limit to the amount of media a person can consume and manage to hang on to any bit of their sanity though." She warned with a teasing grin. Sure maybe it'd be different for him, but she thought even with the deficit he was starting out with he'd get sick of it before too long.

She raised an eyebrow when he mentioned Gotham and shook her head, "Not at all actually." It was a little surprising that he hadn't heard of it, "Maybe a little bit smaller than Metropolis but not much. I'd think the kind of crime we have in Gotham would make it the sort of thing people would know about for that alone."

"Who said I had any sanity to hang onto," he countered with a raise of an eyebrow and a boyish grin. "I'm pretty insane back where I come from. Or so they tell me." It was true. But he didn't want to scare the girl with that piece of information.

Huh. He shook his head at the thought, realizing he probably should know that. This whole different universe thing... "You never heard of the Farscape program, did you? NASA. Big deal. Sent a man up to space to test out a wormhole theory. He didn't come back. That was me." John was testing the waters, seeing what she knew. if anything.

"Well then we've got all eleven seasons of Cheers for you to watch," She said with a laugh because well, if you couldn't laugh at some things what else was there to do? And this was one of those things that probably fell very firmly into the need to laugh realm. "So did a doctor tell you that? Or just people?" She asked, because the distinction was important. Where someone like her brother had been diagnosed there were plenty of people who were called insane just because they were different - like Batgirl for instance.

Farscape wasn't familiar, NASA though, that one she'd heard of - but the rest, wormhole theory and all that. "Ah yeah, I can't say that's something I've heard of. As far as I know the wormholes are all theoretical at this point - we can't even get people to Mars, I don't think congress is gonna worry all that much about some possible wormhole that might or might not even exist." She told him, it was a sad state of affairs really, but you know that was the world she lived in.

"Sounds like the multiverse strikes again." She told him, their words different enough that he could do something like that and she was from a city he'd never heard of.

Crichton actually laughed at the notion, making a face at the idea of watching all of Cheers. Though, he was desperate enough for Earth culture, sooo... "Sure, why not?"

Oh yeah. That was tough. He frowned and shook his head. "Not a doctor. Not officially. But I did have one screwing with my head for a while. They uh...put something in there to drive me batshit crazy. And it worked." He made a face, smirking a bit at the notion. "Though I was going under to get it taken out before I got here...."

Huh. "Okay, probably different universes then. NASA made the mission a pretty big deal in the papers. I mean, not saying I'm famous or anything, but it would have been well known back on my Earth...." That was too bad. But at least she sounded human.

She laughed when he agreed, "Don't do that to yourself, we've got a lot better options than Cheers." Almost anything really, it wasn't the worst show ever, but well - she'd certainly seen better in her time. It was so old. "You need something from this century."

His story got more complicated when he told her that he'd had someone messing in his head, experimenting on him by the sounds of it to make him crazy. "Sooooo you've still got it in your head then? She asked, if he'd been going under to get it removed and then showed up here? Well that didn't bode all that well.

"Yeah, sounds like it." She agreed, it sounded like the sort of thing that'd get talked about a lot. "I can imagine why they'd be eager to show off something like that." She agreed, it made sense, something new and exciting happening, of course NASA would want to talk about it, getting their name out there on something that made people excited was always a good move after all.

"Probably for the best- was never a big fan of that one." He smirked, glad to have options at least, scanning the titles and hoping she wouldn't question the insanity bit too much.

Well, dren. "Uh...not sure, actually." He winced as he said that. "I mean, I haven't seen Harvey since I got here. That's good. Might mean that the procedure was even a success." Which would be amazing. John wasn't pushing his luck just yet, though.

John smirked and nodded. "Yeah, it was a pretty big deal...my uh...dad landed on the moon back where I'm from." He added with a half-shrug. "He was always my hero. Wanted to grow up and be just like him. Or Captain Kirk. Not sure I'm either..." He cleared his throat and changed the subject. "So what about you? What's your story?"

"It was good for one of those late night shows that came on after everything good was over - you know to tell you it was time for bed." She agreed with a small grin.

Barbara pursed her lips a little when he admitted that he wasn't sure about the procedure he'd been intending to undergo - he might have done it and he could be free of what had been done to him, or maybe it hadn't happened at all. He didn't seem to have an idea one way or the other just yet. "Let's keep our fingers crossed then and hope for the best." Barbara hoped this wasn't the kind of thing she was going to have to know about and then do something about later on. She hated that feeling.

"Your dad landed on the moon?" She asked, "Like Neil Armstrong?" She asked, she wondered how different his world was from her own, if his father had replaced Neil Armstrong. The Multiverse created all sorts of problems. "I can see why you'd be inspired, growing up with a role model like that."

"Me? Oh.... well it's not quite as exciting as your story." She admitted with a small laugh. "My dad is the police commissioner where I'm from, he does his best. I've been going to school, working on my graduate degree." She admitted. "I'd been working with a senator recently, and I was on my way home after work one night when suddenly I was here."

John chuckled and nodded because she'd hit the nail on the head with that description. That was exactly what it was.

Yeah. Hope for the best. "Well, here's to hoping." He let out aside, scratching the back of his head and when she mentioned Neil Armstrong, he actually laughed. "Uh, kinda. But he wasn't the first. My dad landed in the 70s. It was still really cool, though." So Neil Armstrong existed in both their universes. Weird. But cool.

"Really? What were you studying?" Because he was genuinely interested to know. It just felt good having a conversation with a real human woman.

"Oh," Barbara nodded when he told her that his dad hadn't been the first but yeah, definitely still cool, like really cool. "Yeah, I mean of course that's amazing. They don't really do stuff like that anymore these days." She admitted, "We're kinda focused on like.... just totally destroying the planet these days." It was a sad state of affairs that they found themselves in now.

"Uh, library science actually." She admitted with a laugh, "But I dropped out for a while, I was having some health issues." That was putting it mildly, but it had been for the best to put the schooling on hold for a little while so she could sort out things with her implant, and now with her brother. "I'd been thinking of changing my focus for a while before I took a leave. Something a little more environmentally focused."

It was strange, having a normal conversation, she didn't really talk about this sort of stuff often - even back home. And now here she was so very far from home talking to a guy who by all rights was from some place even further.

John frowned, staring at her. Wait, was she serious? He frowned. She was serious. Well....shit. That sucked. Would his Earth even still be there if he found a way back one day? Ugh, he didn't know if he wanted to think about it.....

"Oh, so this is perfect for you, then." He nodded around the library. Though the health issue thing...well, he stared at her for a moment, wanting to ask but not really wanting to intrude anymore on that one.

It was nice. Nice to be normal. "You uh...ever worry about your family? Friends? I mean, are they missing you, do you think?" He only asked because he felt that way about his own family back home. A lot. Funny to actually be talking about this now with somebody else.

"Ah yeah, I mean as close as I could get here in a place like this." She shrugged - the library science stuff had been good, she liked the idea of helping people through something like that, like a real way of doing what she tried to do as Batgirl, you know without the mask. But it had started to feel like the sort of thing that wasn't going to be as helpful as she wanted it to be. It was why she'd been looking into something new, some thing with an environmental focus. Clean energy, like her company.

She sobered a little further when he asked about her family and friends. "Yeah," She said softly, "All the time. I - I should be there with them." But she hadn't been a very good friend recently, she knew, she'd let herself get distracted with everything and had let herself get lost in Batgirl. Frankie had been calling, and Alyisa had been trying to tell her something about the company.

"I hope they're missing me." Well she did and she didn't. She didn't want this to hurt them, her being gone, but she wanted to be missed too.

He could understand the part about wanting to make a difference, to do something to help others. That was why he was doing his own experiments. Sure, there was adventure and glory in it. But there was also the possibility of changing the world and changing space travel. Opening Earth up to the universe.

That part went a little too well, if you asked John.

"I'm sure they miss you." He promised her with a sad shrug. Just like he knew his father and his best friend missed him back home. Just like he missed Aeryn....

Really should stop thinking about her. It made his head hurt to even think about.

John sighed, his eyes growing a bit lost in that moment before shaking himself out of it.

"Maybe," She gave him a small smile - he didn't really want to hear all of her problems - he was new in town after all. They didn't really know each other but there was a part of her that wanted to say more.

Something about this place made her want to reach out to people, more than she ever had back home. Maybe it was losing Dick and Jason that did it, they'd felt like safety when she arrived and now that they were gone she couldn't help but want to find something like that again.

"The last time I saw my dad I yelled at him." She admitted when he grew quiet, something about the stillness compelling her to share an ugly truth. "I was so angry with him and now -" She didn't even want to think that she'd never get the chance to see him again, but it certainly felt that way. She'd been here for months now and no one seemed to know what was going to get them back.

Truth was, John liked hearing someone else complain for once. He'd gotten good at it amongst his previous crewmates, and it was...nice Day-to-day problems seemed normal. He was really starting to realize how much he misssd normal.

Poor kid. There was a slow nod at the comment about her father and how she reacted the last time..and he looked down, not really sure how to answer that one. It was tough. He had his own pains, of course, but he wasn't quite as ready to let those out. Not yet.

"I'm sure he knows how you really feel. He knows you love him." John shrugged, smiling at her and hoping it helped. "That's what kids and parents do, right? They fight"

"I hope so," She said trying to return the smile he gave her, she didn't want to start falling apart here, not right now, and not with him. She didn't know him - she wouldn't have even let herself fall to pieces like this around Frankie. Barbara took a slow breath to try and get a hold of herself.

"We haven't really - we haven't fought like this before." She admitted, "I hope he knows that I still love him though." Even after everything, even after the stuff with James, even after his disappointment in Batgirl she would always love her father. She was only ever just trying her best, just like he was.

"I guess I just have to hope that we make it back home eventually, so I can tell him that myself." She stood up a little bit straighter and tried to calm herself just a little bit more, she was fine - everything was fine.

"He knows. I'm sure he knows." John didn't want to act like it was no big deal. He had his own struggles with his father, hoping his dad knew he was okay. Hoping he moved on and was having a good life without him there. Even if it hurt.

"Yeah....I know what you mean." He smiled sadly then cleared his throat and looked at the DVDs, grabbing a handful. "So, I think I'll start with these. You said you had a player? And a TV? Maybe a couch?" He was kidding about the couch. Sort of. "I mean, I can just watch them from my bed."

Honestly, John was looking forward to some time to just...veg out. It would be good for his brain. Maybe he could forget the hell he'd been through over the past few months.

She nodded, it was going to have to do for now, there wasn't much else to do with that sort of thing. She just had to hope things changed one day. And not lose her mind while she was here. She could handle it.

At least John seemed happy to move on and Barbara was glad for it and nodded. "Yeah, yeah definitely take those and let's see about the player. I don't know about a tv, but we've got a portable player that you can use." She said ducking under a counter to find what she was looking for.

She came up laughing when he asked about the couch too and shook her head, "That one I'm afraid I can't help you with, but if you decide to brave a trip through the doors you can probably find one to bring back sometime." She told him as she presented him with the portable DVD player. "Think you can figure this out or do you need a tutorial?" She asked him, if he was as smart as she seemed she had a feeling he could handle it.

He chuckled, taking the player under an arm and nodding. "I can handle it. Finding a TV might be a bit more difficult. Maybe I can ask Tony to rig one up for me," he was kidding. Sort of. He wouldn't be surprised if Stark already had an idea.

"Thanks, Barbara. It was good meeting you face to face." John nodded and turned to leave with that boyish grin of his still planted on his face. Okay, maybe this place wasn't so bad after all. "See you around?"

"Actually," Barbara countered when he mentioned the tv, she reached for the player and opened it up to show him the screen. "We've got that taken care of too. I'm going to trust that you have the rest." She said with a small teasing sort of grin, hopefully the rest would be easy enough to figure out, especially for someone who had done what he had.

"It was really nice to meet you too John." She agreed letting him go with a wave, "Don't feel too bad if you have to come back some time and ask for help." She teased as he headed back out again.
