What: Door-world exploration!
When: Wednesday afternoon
Where: WHO KNOWS
Rating: Low
Status: Incomplete

While the prospects of Starklandia were improving, they were still nowhere close to having all the luxuries that they should have. Jan knew everyone was trying to find as much as they could when they went exploring through the door and really, that was the only place that gave them any sort of entertainment. She'd been fortunate to have all good experiences lately, although she hadn't necessarily walked away with equipment or resources that would be valuable to the cause. Still, when in doubt, another trip through couldn't be the WORST decision. Jan found herself flying that way to see if she could help find some more resources for the new shop, COFFEE, that Clint and Kate had opened. It seemed small, but if anything would help bring about a sort of regularity to the place, coffee was definitely that. Jan had also toyed with the idea of opening something up, some kind of clothing store like she had at the academy, but she was a long way off from finding the right materials and resources as well.

"So really, it's just another day on the job!" she said out loud as she zipped across the courtyard and past the well. She had her goal in mind and just needed to keep searching until she found what she needed.

She saw someone else heading in the same direction and she sped up to catch up. The last time she had met someone and gone on a random adventure with them, it had turned out pretty well. Maybe this was another serendipitous moment to have an adventure and make a new friend. She grew back to her full size when she was just a few feet behind, calling out a greeting.

"Hey! Hi! Are you going through the door?" She jogged a little to catch up. "Can I come too?"

Gwen had been trying to make the most of things after finding herself in an alternate world. That wasn't what was exactly off putting, as she'd been in an alternate world before arriving. It was that she had no way of getting out, and she wasn't sure what to do about it. She'd learned about the door, read about others doing some exploring while going through it, and decided she wanted to take a look for herself. Was it smart to do that without a companion or at least telling anyone about it? Probably not, but she didn't want anyone to tell her no. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission, right? Wasn't that how the saying went?

She'd left her new 'home' in her Spider-suit under her clothes since she didn't know what she was getting into, though she had the hood and mask down around the back of her neck. It didn't seem as pertinent to hide her identity. People were speaking pretty freely about their alter egos for the most part, and it didn't seem like a big deal. Besides, being unmasked was really the least of her worries at this point anyway. There were people far more powerful than her roaming around. That said, wherever she ended up might not be so 'open minded' about that sort of thing so she figured civilian clothes weren't the worst thing in the world.

Honestly, she didn't know what she thought she would find on the other side. Maybe some drums? That'd be nice. Reaching, grasping at straws for something, but still nice. Even some drumsticks would be cool. If not that, then just some new clothes or more coffee -- ooo, ice cream, or cake? she thought -- would be nice. Hell, maybe even by fluke she'd find a way home. Not likely, but maybe not impossible.

She sensed the presence of another just before that person grew to the full size of a human. "Oh, hey," she said. Gwen wasn't too bugged out by the size change, as evidenced by her smile. "Sure. Yeah, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the door. I hear it's kind of a big deal. I'm Gwen. Gwen Stacy." She held out a gloved hand.

Before Gwen even said her name, Jan could respect her for not freaking out over her sudden growth. If she wasn't from universe she was familiar with, at least she was from one where this kind of stuff was fairly normal! But then the name came out and Jan grinned. "Gwen! Gwen, I know you!" She shrunk down and flew in front of her face, studying her. "Not quite the Gwen I remember, but yes! You do look similar!" She grew again, the smile never leaving her face.

"It's Jan!" It was the greeting Jan always gave, in hopes that the person would smile back and go "OMG, Jan!" She'd gotten a few of those responses, but she was beginning to see that a lot of them came from all sorts of different dimensions and worlds. Not like that was anything new or strange, but it made it difficult to keep track of the various backstories and origins. Everyone seemed unique and she felt like she was making a whole new group of friends!

"This is perfect!" She said, turning to walk down the path with her. "I was just thinking of going and then thinking that maybe it wouldn't be safe to go alone? Now we can have each other's back!" She looked over and winked. "It's one of those meant to be moments, you know?"

What was most surprising to her was that Jan had actually heard of her before. The one Peter she'd talked to knew of her, possibly her exactly, just from a little ways into her future, but she had yet to talk to the other Peters roaming around to see if they did. It was pretty easy to see that this Jan was energetic and pretty happy. At least, she seemed to be in a good mood right now.

"I know a Janet. And I'm thinking... because you can do the shrinking and growing thing that you must be a version of the Janet Van Dyne I do know." And that was really freaking cool. "She's awesome. She used to be the Wasp, but she retired. Even so, she helped me out a lot. She made my suit." Gwen pulled her shirt up just a little to show part of the Spider-suit she had on underneath her clothes. "And these." She pulled up one of her sleeves to show one of the web shooting devices she had.

"So what I'm saying is, you're awesome, and going through the weird scary door is totally meant to be."

"Yup, that's me! Although I do prefer the Jan to the Janet," she said with a wink. "Maybe I grow into the name as I grow older." A thought she didn't really want to think about right now. "OOoh, but I like the sound of retirement!" She paused, thinking about it. "I guess we're kinda in retirement right now...nothing much to do and making the best of what we've got!" At least there didn't seem to be a demand for heroes and even if there was, there were enough here to answer the call.

She stopped, inspecting the suit that Gwen wore underneath her shirt, her eyes traveling to the web shooters she had up her sleeves. "Whoa, cool! Is this what you use for your spiderweb?" She had always wanted to try it herself, despite the fact that she had wings. The Spider-people always made it look so cool that she wanted to give it a go herself; she might not be a spider, but at least she was in the insect category. "Do you know if I used an elastic property base to start?" Maybe she'd be able to duplicate it if she could figure out the components and formula she had used before. She would just have to keep an eye out in her door travels.

Like now! She smiled at Gwen's compliment, already feeling like they were going to be fast friends. "This is the best start to a friendship as I think you're awesome!" Alright, so it wasn't a competition to see who was the coolest, but she definitely knew what Gwen meant by it being meant to be.

They stood outside the door, looking at it before Jan looked at Gwen. "Have you heard the different stories of what people have found?" She was both excited and nervous to see what was waiting for them on the other side. "At least we came prepared?"

Gwen took note to make sure she called her 'Jan' and left off the second syllable for the time being. Even though she'd been in alternate universes before, it was still kind of wild to her to see the different versions of those she knew from home. Jan was a prime example of that. She was quite a bit younger, and seemed to be very full of life. It was refreshing and kept Gwen's own mood up.

Ever since arriving, she'd been up and down in her moods. Being around someone who appeared to be generally upbeat was a good thing for her. Maybe she needed to insert herself into situations involving Jan more often after this. Especially since the idea of having friends was a good one.

"I don't know exactly what she used," she said. "But they're awesome because I don't ever have to refill them. Whatever it is, so long as there's moisture in the air, they'll form." It certainly made life for her as Spider-Woman far easier knowing she didn't have to worry about running out of it. Unless she went into a totally dry climate, anyway.

"I heard about the coffee, which you know, definitely amazing at least for me," she said. "I bet we'll find something equally as awesome. You ready?" She asked, and held up her fist to bump Jan's.

"Whoa, I never would have thought a water-soluble base would have been the answer!" But then again, the more she thought about it, the more it made sense; to be able to have a never-ending supply, she had to get the resource from somewhere and what better than the water vapor around them? Always there, always available.

"So any hot situations comes up a little lacking?" Hmmm, she'd have to think on that for her. She hoped there wouldn't be a situation like that, but what if they opened the door and found themselves around an active volcano? She wanted to make sure her new friend was taken care of, no matter the situation she found herself in. She had a feeling they'd have to stay on their toes in this place, especially with the various adventures through the doorway.

Jan took a dramatic breath in and out, nodding her head and raising her own hand to bump Gwen's back. "Ready!" Or as ready as she could be with the unknown starring them in the face.

As the door swung open, Jan peeked inside and saw...a city. Alright. So far so good. "Let's stake things out first," she said, glancing at her partner in crime. "Last time I ran full-fledged thinking it was a normal city and it...wasn't." The thought of all those weird people, just staring and staring and staring..." She looked at Gwen and grinned, shrinking as her wings grew out. "Let's get a higher look!" She turned and made for one of the tallest buildings, sure Gwen would be right behind her.

Gwen probably should've considered the idea that they might end up somewhere that had no humidity and a super dry climate. That wouldn't bode well for her being able to use her web shooters should she need them for anything. Granted, she'd still have her enhanced abilities but it'd be an inconvenience. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, but if it did, she'd adapt. It might even be that she wouldn't need them at all.

"Let's hope that doesn't happen," she said as they approached the door. Soon, they were stepping inside and looking around. It was probably for the best that they do some scoping before they did any in depth exploration. Much as she was excited to see what they were going to find, Gwen didn't think they should just barge in without any idea of what was going on.

"Right behind you," she said. She looked up at the building and shot a stream of webbing up a ways -- not all the way to the top. She had no idea what might be up there. Jan using her wings and shrunken size to get a view would help her know if she should come all the way up or hold off. She let the momentum of the webbing sling her up high, then stuck herself to the side of the building and climbed a little further up. If nothing else, they ought to be able to get a good view of what was around them from the top.

So far, so good. "I mean, it looks normal." Jan flew back down to sit on her friend's shoulder, looking down at the people below. "But I went to a place where it looked normal, but the people were definitely not normal." She shuddered a little before flying back up. "I think it's worth it to take a look. Maybe we can find that fridge!" Oh man what a surprise that would be!

"Anything you wanna go shopping for?" If they were lucky enough to get a fairly regular shopping experience, Jan could be alright with this. The town could still do with an upgrade, but with nothing better to do, it seemed to be the only source of entertainment around town. People seemed to be bringing things in every day so maybe they could actually make a living out of this.

"Race ya down!" She gave her friend a grin and a salute before falling to the ground below.

Gwen peered around as well, using her enhanced eyesight to look further, and it did seem normal. She'd learned a long time ago not to judge by appearances though, so she hadn't quite let down her guard. For all they knew, normal might flip to abnormal on a whim. They needed to be vigilant.

"Definitely the fridge," she said. "That'd be great. If we can't find anything like that, then, I dunno, maybe just some necessities. Clothes and and toiletries and stuff to take back to everyone. Or maybe some electronic parts that the techy people can use to build things."

It was fun being out. Finally doing something that had some sort of purpose attached to it. Even if they didn't find anything of use, they still tried. "No fair!" She called out when Jan got a head start. The acrobatic part of being Spider-Woman had always been fun for her. Gwen was apparently pretty graceful naturally. She let go of the wall and let herself drop. A good ways down, she fired off one of her shooters so the webbing would catch and she could hold on and not splat on the ground. About ten feet from landing she turned in the air and caught herself upside down, which let her dangle down the rest of the way in a very spider-like way. "Which way first?" She asked, twisting around to step onto the ground and release the webbing.

"It looks SO COOL when you do that!" Jan was already on the pavement, which gave her the optimal view of watching Gwen follow after her. "If I can readjust your web shooters, I'm totally making one for myself so you can teach me!" Was it necessary? Definitely not. But it would give her something to do as well as challenge her on something new! Those two things made a great mix, especially in their current situation.

Jan followed suit and looked both ways as she thought about. "Ummmm...let's go this way!" She pointed to the right, where the traffic seemed to be denser, as well as the buildings. That usually meant the heart of a city was that way and they could probably find anything they wanted. "So you said you could carry things with your webbing, right?" She was beginning to feel more and more hopeful this could be a BIG shopping trip for them!

"I guess the worst case scenario is we could find a couple of shopping carts and bring them back to the village." That might even be fun...they could have races down the hills!

"For sure! I can show you." Gwen certainly didn't mind teaching Jan how to swing from the webs. If Jan lost control of her swing she could catch herself with her wings. She'd probably pick up on it pretty quick. It hadn't taken Gwen all that long to figure it out and now it was as easy as walking. Besides, it'd also be something to do when they got back. God only knew she was trying to do whatever she could to fill up her time and stay busy. At least now she felt like she was gaining a friend. A friend who was really sweet and enthusiastic and had some pretty cool tricks herself. That was going to help her a lot.

"Yeah, that shouldn't be a problem. I can probably shape them into bags if we need something like that to carry them in. Might be a little sticky, though. If there's something heavy I can carry it, too." Gwen was small, but she was just as strong as any of the Spider-Man variants. "Carts might be fun though. We can race in them. Or team up and have jousting matches in the square." They'd probably end up getting broken, but it'd be entertaining for a good ten minutes or so, maybe.

"So then, are we in another world? That is, could there be another variation of Jan or Gwen here? Or is this some sort of made up world that doesn't actually exist beyond the door? Does anyone know?"

It was the first time that Jan actually wanted to be back at the village so she could bother either Tony for use of their workshop so she could look more into Gwen's web shooters. She'd have to figure out what different components went into it and then hope to find a door that lead her to the resources she'd need. But then again, with old!Tony's alien tech, maybe she'd be able to develop something even better for Gwen. The sky's the limit! Her excitement grew and she couldn't help but hold her hand up for a high five, glancing into storefronts as they made their way down the street.

"Omigod Gwen, that's a GREAT idea!" She looked at her partner and grinned. "Now we totally need to add shopping carts to the list!" Jan was beginning to accept the shift in her moral compass the longer she stayed in the village. Right now, it was really about the good of Starklandia and all of its current inhabitants; they needed a lot to be able to resume some kind of normalcy and Jan was committed to help out when and where she could. Maybe shopping carts weren't a necessity, but without any working Internet or social media, what else did they have to do to kill time?

Her next set of questions made her pause, thinking on them. Was this some kind of alternate reality? Or was it one of those worlds that was masking itself as Earth but wasn't really Earth? Kinda like Starklandia...

"I dunno," she said with a shrug. "I've heard some people went through the door and wound up in some CRAZY situations. Like...maybe not Earth crazy situations?" She couldn't remember the actual world, but she remembered hearing something about Lord of the Rings and a zombie apocalypse. Maybe...possibly. "If we're in a duplicate Earth, I wonder if we could find ourselves!" She looked at Gwen, perhaps a bit of a crazed look in her eye as she thought about what her alternate self might be like. She had seen a lot of other world friends show up at the Academy but had never met another version of herself. It seemed silly to be jealous that there were those that had other versions of themselves, but Jan wanted to know what else she could have been like.

And then she remembered that Gwen knew a version of her. Right. She'd grill her for more information later. But for now, they had more serious things to look for.

"PERFECT!" Jan stopped outside a large red building that had a large bullseye on it. She was already starting to feel better because she had found a brand! The last time she had ventured in with Sirius, there had only been non-branded stores so that had been a bit weird. Not to mention the creepy people. Maybe this meant they were in a normal world!

"Shopping carts, food, clothes, EVERYTHING WE'VE EVER NEEDED!" Except a fridge, but she would figure that out as soon as they started their shopping experience. "Shall we?" She gave her a mocking bow, causing the automated doors to slide open.

Gwen had yet to meet any other version of herself. In another part of the multi-verse she'd found out that version of her was dead, and in Starklandia she'd come to learn that Alpha Peter knew a version of her. Whether or not that was her from a future encounter or was a different her entirely remained to be seen. There was likely no way to actually figure that out, either. It didn't matter that much, she supposed, but it would be interesting to find out what another Gwen was like. Would she be a drummer, too? Was she Spider-Woman? The dead!Gwen hadn't been, but that didn't mean much. Her Peter hadn't been Spider-Man but there were lots of Peters who were. Time would tell if another Gwen popped up.

"I guess we're gonna find out," she said. At least they were kind of equipped to deal with stuff like that. Bizarre things happening, enemies attacking, all were kind of normal occurrences for Gwen at this point in her life so she wasn't terribly concerned. One way or another she typically could figure out what to do and with Jan there it only upped their chances of managing to deal with anything out of the ordinary. They'd be fine. She assured herself of it.

"Oh wow," she said. "Jackpot." A grin tugged at the side of her lips as she passed through the sliding doors. "We shall." Once inside, she felt the urge to shop. "I don't even think I need my Spider Senses to tell me that we're going to start looking for essentials and end up with a bunch of crap we didn't realize we'd even picked up."

Jan laughed, immediately feeling at ease as she pulled a shopping cart out and handed it to Gwen, pulling another for herself. "Perfect, one each should be able to handle it!" She frowned, thinking about the most important item that'd need to find. "Target doesn't sell fridges, do they?" Well, they'd have to stop off somewhere else to grab something there. She was determined to get one for Tony, because who knew when she might get lucky enough to find another world that had everything they needed? She felt like 3/3 was too lucky and she wasn't going to ruin her chances.

"We definitely have to grab all the snackies," she said, following the path that took them to the women's fashion. She had already brought back a lot of clothes with Sirius, but you could never have too many options; especially since she wasn't able to make anything herself. She passed a display of mannequins and stopped, staring at one of them. Had one of them...moved? She stood standing there for a moment, just watching. "Did...did that thing just move?" She pointed at the mannequin she thought she had seen move, looking at Gwen. She was hoping she was just going a bit crazy and credited that to the lack of normal, processed food she usually ate.

"I don't think so," she said. "But if there's a Target, there's probably an appliance store somewhere nearby." It sounded logical, even if it didn't turn out that way. Gwen was going to hope for the best. A fridge would be a fantastic item to bring back. But so would two heaping carts full of crap courtesy of Target. They'd have to be at least a little strategic. Raiding the market section with non-perishable food would be a smart move. "Yes, and--"

Even before Jan asked her, Gwen knew something was off. Her Spider Sense alerted her to the point of her actually pausing in her steps to look to the side at the mannequin in question just before Jan inquired if it had moved. She stared it down for a good ten or fifteen seconds. Damn, she was glad she wore her suit and shooters under her clothes today. "That would be crazy, wouldn't it? And by crazy I mean horrifying." Her gaze drifted to the other mannequins. They seemed still for now. Though she hadn't really answered verbally, Gwen gave a subtle nod that yes, it did move. And yes, they needed to probably be alert because of it.

Jan's eyes moved from Gwen to the mannequin, but it seemed to be fairly immobile now. She made a 'yikes' face at Gwen, almost relaying that they would continue, but be a bit more aware of their surroundings. "Probably best to get what we can and get out," she said, pushing the cart down the aisle. The thought of shopping around for a little bit was pushed from her mind as she now concentrated on the necessities that they'd want to bring people back in Starklandia.

"Shoes!" Jan's thoughts of the mannequin's disappeared when she thought about what had been asked for that she didn't have a large supply of. "And sunglasses!" Maybe they could even toss in a few jewelry options; just because they were trapped in a weird, medieval type town didn't mean they had to live that way! "The last time I went shopping, I found the best practice was just dumping everything in." She swept her hand across a table lined with tee shirts and dumped them all in her cart.

"Not how I usually go shopping, but we have a whole village to provide for!" Thank goodness they each had a cart. "Anything you've been wanting?"

"Definitely shoes," she agreed. Gwen had been walking around in her strappy flats since before she'd arrived and while they were comfortable she was ready to wear something else. Like Jan, she started to sweep as much into her cart as she could. She swept in some leggings. "We should get guy stuff, too." They ventured into the men's section and did the same thing, swiping in men's clothing and some shoes. Gwen made sure to keep an eye out on the mannequins because she was not about to want to engage in a fight with one. That was creepy as hell. That said, she definitely would. And when one looked like it was about to take a step, she shot a stream of webbing around its ankles. Not today. Nope.

"We should get some non-perishable food. Let's sweep the market, then get the hell out of here. Those things are giving me the creeps." Gwen scrunched her nose, then steered her cart over to the market section. She started tossing cans into the cart. "Jack pot!" She grabbed a few boxes of pop tarts and tossed them into the cart as well. "Still wish we could find a fridge. But maybe next time." She threw some spaghetti noodles and cans of sauce into the cart. "What about shampoo and stuff? Toiletries?" They were running out of space in their carts but they may not get another chance like this to bring back so much for everyone. "We could circle back, grab some things like backpacks or luggage and fill those up too."

Jan shot a few mannequin's down, laughing as she followed after Gwen. Alright, this was weird, but she was having a good time watching Gwen's back and assisting with any mannequin's that needed to be taken down. It almost felt like a game show! OMG, what if they were ON a gameshow? Jan looked around, squinting and wondering if they were being videotaped through the cameras.

She shook herself as she heard Gwen talking to her, asking about...toilets? Oh, toilettries! "Yeah, let's just grab-" She stopped as a family of mannequins started to make their way towards them. "Uh, on second thought, I think the clothes and the food is good for now, I think we should probably head back now!" She glanced at Gwen. "How do you feel about long term borrowing these things?" She didn't think they'd have time to pay for these things and to cement that idea, she heard a scream behind her.

Her blasters were up as she aimed them towards the noise, but stopped, a look of disbelief on her face. One of the mannequins had touched one of the other shoppers and...

"Oh my god, are we in some kinda bad movie?!" Jan watched as the shopper slowly turned into a mannequin themselves, completely lifeless but moving with some sorta weird magic. "Alright, we're outta here." She turned her cart towards the exit and started to make a run for it. "At least they're slow, right?"

"Oh no, nope. Asbo-freaking-lutely not!" Gwen called out when she saw that there were more mannequins just popping up and people were actually turning into them. She was not about to let herself or Jan be turned into some sort of mindless mannequin. Hell no. That was terrifying. How on Earth would she ever be able to play drums again? Or swing around? Those things looked stiff and they were faceless. No way. Terrifying. The thought that a world like this existed and it was happening at a freaking Target was unbelievable. And frankly, Gwen didn't want to stick around to find out if this was some sort of sorcery spell on these people or if there was some sort of mega ultra powerful mannequin because seriously? Yikes.

"I think we're on the same wave length," Gwen said. "Pretty sure Target's profit margins are high enough that they won't miss any of this. Time to go!" Her Spider-Senses were pinging pretty much non-stop which wasn't a good sign. Jan was right; thank goodness they were moving slowly. Otherwise this might get a lot messier. She just wanted to get this stuff and go. She turned her head and shot off a series of webs that wove around the legs of a few of the mannequins that were closing in on them. "Door!" She ran with her partner in long-term-borrowing-crime toward the automatic doors, pushing the carts along the way. "These are so gross! Ugh!" She shot more webbing to completely wrap around the body of one who was coming at them from the side. "Don't stop until we're back. Who knows if there are more of these things out in the parking lot!"

This was why Jan liked Gwen best; she was sensible and was a go with the flow kinda gal. They were both out in the open, Jan taking a moment to catch her breath when Gwen's frantic warning reached her. She tensed, glancing around as she kept running, pushing the cart in front of her. "Alright, we can't be that far from the door, right?" Jan heard a crash behind them and glanced behind her, a few of the mannequin's now spilling out of the store. "SHOOT!" She sent a repulsor blast past Gwen, blowing up the front of the store. "Sorry, thought we needed the distraction! C'mon!" She really needed to get on those shrink discs, it would have made this a lot easier if they didn't need to push their full carts through the city streets.

They received a lot of glances as they passed by people, but Jan tried to keep her eye on the prize: the door was just up ahead. "Almost there!" She called out, glancing around to see where Gwen had gotten to. She figured she had been right behind her the entire time, hoping she hadn't had to deal with too many things in the back. She really hoped there were no more mannequin's rushing after them with the fear of being turned into one. While Jan was all about people stopping to look at her, it was more in the sense that she would be able to interact back with them.

Thank goodness they had left the door open. Jan didn't even think that that might not have been the safest bet as anything could then get into the village, but she pushed her cart through, stopping once her feet hit the wooden floor and glancing back to help Gwen get through with her cart of treasures.
