She rolled her eyes when he suggested the clothes were just a show, that underneath it all he was unchanged. "I think you really do believe that." She said first because that much was obvious, he said it enough, and no doubt heard it often enough about himself. But that didn't mean it was true. If he was nothing but a villain on the inside he never would have saved the Senator, or put himself in harms way for her, or pulled this dinner together. He might not see it yet, but Kitty could see that beneath all of that there was kindness, even if the edges of it were rough.
"It's not the clothes you wear that make you who you are. The uniform was never what made me an X-Man anymore than what you have on now make you anything other than who you are." She told him simply, clothes were unimportant at the end of the day, whether she was in a wedding dress, the X-Men uniform, or just a well fit pair of jeans and a nice top like tonight. That wasn't important, it wasn't who either of them were.
And removing them from those things, from the uniforms and the groups behind them, it made it easier to get to know one another without all of that getting in the way, to see past those things and see if there really was common ground between them. And from where she sat there did seem to be some. It was all a matter of finding more now.
She smiled, "I'm glad you have, I think a second chance is exactly what we can call it. A little like starting over, without so much of the past hanging over you. It's up to you how much of it you want to bring with you." Because other than the X-Men who were left here, these people didn't know John, and they certainly didn't know Pyro. He had a chance to make this a true second chance. "I don't know that I'd call this a vacation from the real world, but it is something different, and I think neither of us has much of a say in whether or not we stay. But I hope we're here for a while longer." As much as she probably needed to get back, there would always be something there that needed her attention, some new problem some new threat. To be in a place without any of that. Well she liked that, and she liked what was happening here with John.
