Who: Anyone who wants to come by
What: Grand-opening party!
Where: Pancho's Bar
When: Friday Night

The streamers were up (because Jan had insisted), and the bar was as ready as it ever would be. Alcohol was stored in a few make-shift shelves on the back wall and a relatively well-cobbled together bar was freshly polished and ready to go. It wasn't the most well-put-together, place, but Pancho's definitely resembled its namesake in terms of dim lighting, chipped tables and a floor that looked like it should be sticky. All in all, Carol was pretty proud of what they'd made. The minifridge was even a good choice since it allowed them to keep some drinks cold (they were going to have to find a larger one in the future, though).

She had warned Peter that the pizza oven needed to be ready by that evening, but she wasn't sure how on the ball with that he was. She'd been busy doing damage control on some electrical issues they were having with the fridge and double checking to make sure they actually had drinking cups (that took a little bit of maneuvering, but Clint came through with the coffee mugs). Yup, vodka from coffee mugs, a mini-fridge filled with a variety of stolen beers, and mismatched chairs. And, of course, the balloons. The annoying, awful squeaky balloons that had floated into a couple of corners of the room, save for the two that kept dragging on the floor and that Carol dreaded would pop at some point that evening. Definitely professional.

Karaoke was set up in one corner of the room with a make-shift stage and Christmas lights (Yes, more Christmas lights) decorating around it. Old 80s rock music blasted from the speakers for now, and Carol stood behind the bar, ready to serve as needed but more than willing to drag anyone else into the position should they so choose that evening.

Tony had almost felt a little bit like he was getting a hold of the situation, sure maybe he'd spilled his drink all over his hopefully new friend, but like he wasn't going to completely melt down about it, and he had a solution ready just in case and it was all going to be fine. Right up until Steve came along and Tony felt himself go bright red at his comment and was fairly certain he was about to spontaneously combust as Steve disappeared just as quickly as he'd interjected himself into the conversation.

Old Fashioned just seemed confused while Tony dropped his head down to the bar top and groaned, hoping maybe the floor might just open up under him and swallow him whole so he didn't have to go on any more. "It's a long and embarrassing story," He muttered rather than actually tell Old Fashioned about his recent run ins with shirtless Steves.

He did turn his head just a little to glance at the other guy though when he reassured him it was fine, lifting his head again when he mentioned acid. "Someone spilled acid on you before?" He asked aghast, "You're ... I mean you were okay after that?"

"Apparently," Clark replied as he watched the blond young man drift into the crowd. "Boyfriend?" he asked as he motioned toward Steve as he returned his attention back to the young man whose face was about as red as an apple, glaring down at the ground like he was hoping for something to happen. It was an expression he was all too familiar with. High school was a hell of a time. Still, he offered him a smile. "Or just the guy you want to ask out on a date?" If he had a dollar for every time things went wrong when he had wanted to ask Lois out... Well, he would be a rich man not having to live on a reporter's salary.

Oh, right. He needed to stop sharing that story about acid. "I have thick skin," he said carefully with that farm boy smile. "I'd offer to provide proof but that's not exactly my style." It was a joke, of course. It's not Tony had a history of dealing with shirtless farmboys or anything. "So, what's your thing?" he asked as he glanced around the room. "I see some soldier types." He paused. "They have a certain...way they carry themselves, y'know?" "Super hero types," he added as he motioned toward the Peter he'd met before then returned to glance at him. "So, what about you?"

"I-" Tony started and stopped himself, okay maybe he was that obvious, he hoped he wasn't but if Old Fashioned was there asking him if Steve was his boyfriend or just someone he wanted to ask out sometime. "I mean - that is-" He struggled then to actually say what he was feeling and you know not just stumble over himself even more than he already had that night. "That's Steve - he just... we went to school together, he's my friend." And yeah maybe Tony would like to ask him out sometime but like considering how things had been going for him recently he could already picture how that would go. Some new person would arrive right on top of him or something and Steve would have some smart aleck remark about it that was way too clever and perfectly timed to be fair.

"Thick skin," Tony repeated, because sure people had thick skin but regular people didn't just get acid spilled on them and then come away unscathed. But if he didn't want to explain he could keep it to himself, just like he was doing with his name, what was one more little bit of information like that. "Nah it's okay, I wouldn't want you to like... try and find some acid to prove it." He huffed softly, hoping that had actually been a joke.

And hen he was asking about his thing and Tony wasn't entirely sure what he meant, until Old Fashioned started listing off different types and well.... yeah Tony knew exactly what he meant. "Uh... something between the two?" He said finally, Steve was - well he was a soldier through and through, but despite Tony's inability to function when his body was on display he did actually like him for more than his looks. And the way he was every bit the hero that people had always said he was made him like Steve that much more.

"Oh, wow, you're like in love with him," he teased with an amused grin. He glanced in Steve's direction. "Falling for your friend is tough," he said with a knowing nod, "and very complicated." He thought of Lana. Among a whole host of others, but you not forgot the first. "Worried he's going to say no or worried he's going to say yes?" he asked, glancing back at Tony after studying the blond. "Because those are two very different fears, right?"

He nodded and merely repeated: "Thick skin." Clark took in the 'somewhere between the two' comment. Huh. "So, you're like a sidekick?" He tilted his head. There weren't many heroes where he was from. In truth? Until Kara, he had been the only one. Well, him and the Bat. But he liked to lurk in the shadows and stay in crime-ridden bubble. Clark had the luxury of flying off in a flash where he was needed most across the globe. When he was needed, anyway. But he'd read a comic book or two. Growing up, Warrior Angel had been his favorite.

Tony's eyes went with when somehow Old Fashioned had come to the conclusion that he was in love with Steve too-sarcastic-for-his-own-good Rogers. "In love with him? No - no, no, no, No way. He's just - you know... my friend." Yeah that was a totally smooth and great denial of that and not at all more awkward than anything else he might have said to that. But Old Fashioned seemed to feel pretty certain about it, enough to commiserate a little about it, like he had experience with such things. "I mean he's Steve - he wouldn't -" It didn't matter did it? Steve wasn't going to say yes or no because Tony wouldn't ever actually be able to get his foot out of his own mouth long enough to ask, and if he did well, why would Steve ever say yes to him?

This was not how he pictured tonight going, he kind of wished that Old Fashioned would offer to show him his thick skin then, at least he could pretend for a few minutes that he wasn't the most awkward human alive.

"Side-kick?" Now that was unexpected, "No, no Iron Man is no side-kick, I don't have a side-kick and I'm not anyone elses' side-kick." Because he wasn't because he was a hero too, maybe he was more awkward and a little more spastic than the kind of thing that Steve had, but you know he was.... he was his own person and that didn't mean he had to be attached to anyone to do that. "Sometimes Steve and I have worked together, but we're partners when we do, not ... you know."

Clark stared at him with amusement. The young man doth protest too much. But he wasn't going to press the issue. The kid was squirming enough. So, he just said: "He wouldn't?" Well, it sounded more like a question, but just enough to make the young man think that perhaps the unspoken question was: "How did Tony know if he didn't try?" Still, he let it lie. The young man seemed to be dealing with a lot in a short amount of time and Clark didn't want him imploding into a puddle because an investigative reporter was sniffing around and possibly exposing secrets.

"Iron Man?" he asked. "Do you like have your skin turn to metal?" He perked up a bit. "I knew a kid like that once." He paused. "He had to wear a mask, though. And he had a twin brother." But that was not the point. "He called himself Ferro Lad, though." He wore a bit of a sad smile. He wondered how he was. It had been a while since he'd had any contact with his Legion friends.

Yeah he'd definitely convinced him. Tony could tell. But Tony didn't really know what else there was to say because well Steve was Steve, he was good and way too smart and funny and yeah like really ridiculously good looking and why would he ever even entertain the thought of Tony? He sighed, things had gotten a lot more complicated here than they ever were back home. He blamed the other versions of themselves for it.

"Yeah Iron Man, that's me." He could talk about Iron Man though, that was easier and well Old Fashioned had some interesting friends, people who turned into metal. "Now that's clever," He said when he heard the name, it was almost Iron Man just a little different, and well Tony couldn't help but like it. "My skin doesn't turn to metal, but I have a suit - I can fly and you know shoot things if I need to and help people." He shrugged, maybe Old Fashioned's friend should have been called Iron Man instead.

"I know a guy who has a suit." He nodded after a thought. "It's made of Steel." He paused. "Calls himself Steel." He paused. "His creativity is in engineering, obviously." He was pretty straight forward in terms most aspects of his life. He wondered, though, why someone ask young as Tony was busy doning a suit the way he did. Though, he wasn't one to talk.

As nice as this conversation was, though, he was fairly certain that Tony's attention was a bit...divided to say the least. Clark's painfully observant eyes followed Tony's gaze--seeing the young blond in the distance. After the longest of pauses, just to be sure he wasn't going crazy, he soft chuckled and said: "Why aren't you talking to him?"

"Yeah?" He couldn't help but grin about the the idea another engineer who had gone and made himself a suit and was out there with his own probably super hero identity, well Tony helped he was a hero and not some guy who had gone bad and was wearing a suit and showing off his skills for the wrong reasons. "That sounds pretty cool."

Tony was doing his best okay, he did actually want to talk to Old Fashioned and get to know him a little bit more, he seemed like he had a lot of interesting depth to him that he wasn't sharing a whole lot of just yet. But maybe if he got to know him better? Of course with Steve talking to Bucky though, well Tony couldn't help but check in occasionally, he wasn't totally distracted, but you know.... just a tiny bit. "I -" Yeah definitely discreet, "I mean we're not, not talking?" He suggested unhelpfully.

"I just.... I was kind of a spazz the last time we talked." He added after a moment. "I don't know that he'd be all that interested in talking after that."

Clark merely stared at him in confusing. A silent "I don't get it?" expression written on his face, and propped his head on his hand as he waited for the young man to explain with just a hint of that small, disarming You Can Trust Me Farm Boy Grin etched on his lips. It was the grin Ma used to say was the only thing she couldn't resist when he asked for an extra slice of pie on the farm.

The one thing this conversation was proving to Tony the longer it went on was what an idiot he was. Somehow between the Academy and winding up here he'd forgotten how to talk to people? Or maybe it was just people who weren't Jan? He didn't really know for sure but what he did know was that every conversation he was having these days was leaving him scrambling for the right words and feeling less like the actual genius he was and more like some fumbling weirdo.

"Steve is just.... he can be very serious sometimes," And incredibly sarcastic at others and it left Tony feeling off center when they talked never totally sure if they were teasing one another or if Steve was actually being serious with him and maybe he cared just a little too much about what Steve thought about him to know how to handle that. "We haven't always seen eye to eye on things and so I guess I'm just really aware of how things could go bad again?"

"And I just, would like him to like me. It's all complicated, and I don't know what I'm doing around him. Every time I open my mouth I say something ridiculous." He admitted, this was not the conversation he thought he'd be having with a complete stranger tonight, a complete stranger whose name he still didn't know, but here he was spilling his guts.

Clark merely nodded at him. It sounded like he cared a lot about what Steve thought. He wondered how much of Tony's own denial was a self defense mechanism or if he just needed to keep up an appearance for fear that someone might see past the armor he had built around himself. He didn't want to tell the kid what to do because... Well, mostly because that never worked out well. So, instead, he did what some of his therapist friends did.

He asked Tony: "And how does that make you feel?" Because, ultimately, Tony needed to be able to figure this out on his own. Plus, he was sure there was more going on than just how he was nervous around Steve.

Old Fashioned was incredibly stoic for a guy who was having a stranger tell him way too many things on a first meeting, but he didn't seem to totally hate it either - so maybe that was something. He should probably be saying most of this to Jan, but she was busy for the moment and here he was.

"Like an idiot?" He supplied as he lifted his shoulders with a sigh, "Which is not a thing I feel like often, I know I don't look it, or act it I guess, but I am actually a genius, but I feel like I'm always scrambling to keep up around him." Steve was way too clever for his own good and it always managed to catch Tony off guard.

"Steve is kind of a legend where we're from, so you know you grow up hearing about him your whole life, and then you actually meet him and he's funny and nice and like... look at him." Tony sighed, "I'm just some guy next to all of that," And then there was Bucky too, this one here and also the one back home. "I'd rather not hear it from him that I'm not enough." Better to just tell himself that.

"So, do you think Steve thinks he's better than everyone?" he asked with a furrowed, thoughtful brow. In truth? He felt a bit more sympathy for Steve than he did Tony. As someone who was, well, considered a "legend", he knew just how wrong Tony was. If anything, he was certain Steve didn't think of himself as anything other than just a guy doing what was right. If, of course, he was anything like Tony described. To many, they saw Clark--decked out in his uniform, soaring above the sky, and somehow he was the answer to their prayers. It was...hard. Uncomfortable, even.

He glanced at the waiter coming to take his order and kept it simple, but he offered them a smile in return as he listened the young man speak, glancing occasionally at the young blond. "Is that the only thing you're worried about?" he added.

Tony's eyes went wide at the thought of that and he shook his head, "No, god no. Steve hates that sort of thing," Cause at the end of the day he was just Steve, which really just only made him better too. Legends were nice and all, Tony had heard about Steve plenty as he was growing up, but to actually meet him and get to know him and see the person behind the legend, that was something else entirely. "I mean I know he's not that, that's just the thing I grew up hearing about, all the stories about what he'd done before, a lot of it was sanitized so that regular people didn't really know the whole truth. He's so much more than all of that, better than all of that since you know, he's an actual person."

He sighed glancing at Steve for a moment, "I'm not good at this sort of thing. I uh - I like to flirt and stuff, I had this hot tub back home, at the top of my tower and it was easy to just you know invite someone back, to ask for a dance but Steve is..." He frowned looking for the right words, "I don't want to just flirt with him."

"So, what do you want?" he asked. Sometimes? You just had to say it out loud. It didn't mean that it would come true. Clark wasn't a complete believer in self-actualization, but knowing what you wanted and being able to say it was always the start of any process. Lois often said as she did it, so you, well, didn't often get a chance to a) disagree with her or b) stop her or c) tell her no. Though, just from what little Tony was telling him--he wasn't used to being told no, either.

Clark studied him for a little longer before he finally said: "You got two options: ignore it and hope that it eventually goes away or you face it and see what happens." He glanced at the young blond man one more time before turning back to Tony. "The worst thing he can say is no. But just because he says no doesn't mean he'll stop being your friend." He nodded his head in Steve's direction. "Does he seem like the kind of guy who would do that?"

What did Tony want? That was probably a really good question. He hadn't actually gotten far enough to put it into words yet. It was one of those sort of amorphous sort of feelings that welled up inside him every time he saw Steve and he didn't exactly know what to do with it. But it was something, "I -" He started and stopped because he probably should have a better answer if he was going to do anything about it.

He pursed his lips a little when Old Fashioned laid out his options for him, either ignore it - which honestly felt impossible at this point, sure he could go around and embarrass the hell out of himself every time he was around Steve, but he'd do that regardless, and never know if Steve felt anything else. Or he could embarrass himself in front of Steve and take his shot.

Glancing at Steve for a moment, Tony considered it, Steve wasn't cruel or heartless. And even when he teased he was still someone Tony considered a friend, and he'd embarrassed himself in front of Steve plenty up to now and he hadn't decided to drop Tony all together yet so that was something. "No, I don't think he is the kind of guy who would do that."

"Okay then," he said, "then you can relax." He offered him a warm smile. "Steve's your friend. No matter what direction this goes," he began, "you know you can count on that, so stress less about what you're going to say and just..." He shrugged. "Be." He slapped the young man on the shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze before taking a swig of his drink.

Glancing in Steve's direction, though, he smirked. "Just be careful about the jealousy thing. It's never a good look on anyone." Not that he was saying Tony was the jealous type, of course. He was just imparting some words of wisdom.

Surprisingly, Tony did actually feel a little bit like he could relax. It was a feeling that he hadn't expected, but then he hadn't expected to have any real talks about his feelings for Steve tonight either, so everything was going a little differently than he'd planned it seemed. "Yeah that's - that's good advice," He agreed taking a breath out and finishing off his own drink. "Thanks for, you know letting me embarrass myself in front of you." Even without knowing his name Tony had felt comfortable enough in the moment to be honest about what he was thinking and feeling.

And then he'd mentioned jealousy and Tony frowned for a moment looking over to Steve once more and seeing him with Bucky and well... it had never really been jealousy there, it was something else, complicated, but not jealousy.

He nodded though, because he was right, jealousy wasn't a great look, he'd seen it on others, Enchantress and Natasha even briefly, they were all better than that though, he knew. So yeah, this had been a good talk, it gave him something to work toward, instead of just spazzing out all the time. "Um.... so okay, I really need to know your name, because otherwise I'm going to go around calling you Old Fashioned from here on out and I feel like you probably have a real name?" Sure he'd spilled a lot of feelings onto this guy already, how much more embarrassed did he have to be about asking his name at this point?

Clark shrugged. "Most people feel better after talking," he replied, "don't let the stoic tendencies give way. Bottling things up just make you crazy." Or worse. There were quite a few people he knew who could use a little bit of unloading to lighten their soul. However, that was neither here nor there.

Clark was, actually, quite amused. "I kind of like the sound of Old Fashioned," he replied. Some might find it offensive, but Clark often wore that title like a badge of honor. There were some old fashioned values that never went out of style. He downed his drink and raised his brows. "I don't know about you, but I love a good mystery," he began, "it's why I became a reporter." He clasped his hand on the young man's shoulder and gave it a squeeze before leaning to say in his ear: "And in a small town like this, fun little mysteries are the spice of life. See you around, Tony."
