------------------------------------------------

Steve liked the fresh air, he hadn't got a chance to enjoy it in Wakanda, hadn't got a chance to do much except what had been done. Then like the dust in his hands it had all slipped away, reality and earth did as well. At first he'd been alone, he'd had time to explore everything by himself, had slept and eaten and there had been days of that kind of echoing quiet. It gave him time to think, this hadn't been part of his plan. He'd cleared out a house, put together a tool kit from things he'd found around. The tools had needed some care but worked well for his basic needs.

Once he'd seen to cleaning, washing windows inside and out, then it was building up firewood. Steve must have spent an entire day taking apart dead trees, carrying the stores into the square. It was good, he didn't think too much then, just that it might get cold, there might be more people.

And there were more people, strangers who appeared much the same as he had and Steve tried to give them space, be welcoming and yet not threatening. He wasn't sure how well it was working. But he'd decided that usually the best way to make peace and the like was through someone's stomach. Which is what had lead him to taking a little walk down to where the trees got closer together and twigs cracked under foot.

He never wanted to kill something, but he also understood foodchains and the like. The large boar hadn't stood much chance against the impact of his shield and it was quick at least. The rest of it took longer and Steve didn't have a lot of experience but it wasn't the first time he'd butchered something so he got there. Steve carried it back to the square, where he'd already lit the fire under the metal rack he'd dragged out from behind a shed was scrubbed clean. A spit would be better, but that kind of machinery wasn't his forte. Coals and what looked to be an old metal gate would do fine.

It was practically a barbecue.

"Fair point," Peter agreed - no tables, no need for manners, it was sound logic as far as he was concerned and well there were more important things to worry about these days than whether or not Peter looked like a dog with a bone while he ate for the first time since he'd shown up here.

He considered the guy for a moment, he could see where he looked like the Clint he'd been familiar with, but he could also see the ways he wasn't. It really would have just been too much good luck for him to have fallen through the portal back to his own life, it had to be this.

"That'd make you Clint, right?" He guessed.

Definitely awkward. But you know that was just a theme for Peter so nothing new here. "Guess I'm not quite what you were expecting when you latched on to Parker then." He wished for the spider gang again, they all had a level of shared experience that got past a lot of the awkward, here there was only Peter and well - there was no hiding all of him from this guy.

Fair point was right. Even Clint managed that at least once a day. Usually. Some days were worse than others. And this one wasn't ranking as great by any means, but there was food, a pretty sweet stranger Captain America and a totally normal Kate Bishop so it wasn't the worst either.

Which might have really said something about his life, actually.

"Clint. Hawkeye. Whatever. Hey, man, don't worry about it. You're kinda what I was expecting. Just say something sorta awkward and hilarious and I think you'll pass just fine. I don't know Steve properly over there, and he just gave me some meat, so." Listen, he could roll with it. It was fine.

Peter raised an eyebrow looking back at the Steve for a moment, then back to Clint, "Didn't think you and him were that close, but maybe that's just my dimension."

This whole place was a mess, it'd be one thing if he'd ended up in some other New York, met some other Spider-kid who was looking to figure out his schtick - Peter had really been able to handle that, you know with three other Spider-people to help him out.

"It'll be fine, we've got this - I've got some experience with things like this, and I can say with absolute certainty that I made it through the last time." He paused and frowned, "Unless I died and this is where you go after, then I didn't make it through, but I probably did. I feel like I did - totally. Yeah. I survived. It's fine."

"Depends on the day," Clint said honestly. Because in his own world he liked Steve plenty. They were friends, and they usually got along just fine. Steve'd taught him how to fight properly. But sometimes weeks passed and they didn't need to talk. It all depended.

Well, there was a story, Clint figured. He rose an eyebrow in question, but didn't actually ask. You couldn't just ask a dude why he thought maybe he was dead. Seemed rude. And maybe a little too close to home. Although this time, not so much. "Yeah, I don't think you're dead. I'm not dead. Totally positive this time. I was just taking my dog for a walk because the Jeff the baby shark with legs was annoying him."

And that there was a sentence that should never have been said out loud.

"Relationships are like that," He agreed solemnly, he and MJ had their good days and their bad of course. And then there was just the bad, and the very bad, and the much worse.

He survived going through the portal, he knew he did, he wouldn't be so tired if he had died - that wouldn't be fair at all if he did die and then spent his afterlife with that dull ache in his back and the hole in his heart where MJ had once been. No he lived through it, "It's complicated - but it's fine, we saved the world. It's what we do." Spider-men-people-girls-whatever. They saved the world together and they survived it.

But then Clint had to bring up a baby shark with legs and well - maybe that was more complicated than his run in with the Spider-gang and the particle accelerator. "Pretty sure you're never supposed to open the door to land sharks, that never ends well."

"Sometimes it be like that," Clint agreed, because yeah, relationships were weird. He was pretty bad at them, generally speaking.

On the other hand, he was pretty great at saving the world, so he got that well enough. "It's probably fine," he agreed. "Different strokes for different .... worlds?" Bad attempt at whatever it was he'd been attempting there, but the point was still made. This was clearly a different world. Peter's was probably still in good shape. Hopefully.

"Yeah. I didn't want to keep it, but you try telling that to whatever the pink girl version of Deadpool is. Jeff is a thing, and I don't think he's going anywhere."

"Yes it do," Peter agreed, sometimes it was exactly like that.

It was just like he'd told Miles, life was a leap of faith, sometimes things went your way, and sometimes they didn't. And in Peter's case they very often didn't - but you know, he did his best and he was trying not to let the realization that things had very much gone not his way this time overwhelm him and instead stay at least a little bit hopeful that they could figure this out. After all it looked like they had a bit more help this time around.

Pink. Girl. Deadpool. None of that sounded like a great combination, and and considering it had somehow landed Clint with a landshark well he imagined that was exactly what it was, not a great combination. "Guess you had no choice but to end up here then, if only to get away from Jeff."

True enough, if nothing else, there was little better in a catastrophic moment than Captain America and Iron Man, and they had both of those things right here. Well, right over there. Talking amongst themselves.

At this point, Clint may as well have just called this weird nonsense a vacation instead of something that actually worried him.

He wasn't there yet, but eventually. Maybe.

"Yeah," Clint said, but tilted his head slightly to the side in consideration. "He did have a pretty cute face though. Like a puppy. But a shark."

"Like a puppy, but a shark." Peter repeated, frowning as he tried to picture what that would look like. "But it was really as shark with legs?" He asked before he shrugged, who was he to judge. He'd just met a pig with spider powers, or was it a spider with pig powers?

It was hard to say, but the thing was there were weirder things in the world than sharks that were like puppies.

"So what do you reckon that we're gonna wake up from this fever dream any time soon?" He asked instead of rambling about pigs and spiders and shark dogs.

This didn't look like the sort of place they were going to have to rely on a goober to plug into a mainframe and get them all home again after they foiled some ultimately misguided plan by some villain, this looked like nothing Peter had ever seen before if he was being honest. And he'd seen a lot. God he was tired.

It was actually a shark with legs. Clint nodded and then shrugged like what can you do?. It sounded nuts, maybe, but he figured Peter'd probably seen some pretty crazy shit before too. This was like, the nice pet-able side of the ... iceberg.

Metaphors were hard today.

"Dunno," he admitted, craning his head a bit to see if there was food left, and also if everyone had gotten some before he went over there and hogged it all. Pun intended. "Coz you took a nap right? I totally took a nap, and I'm still here. So are you, apparently."

"I do still seem to be here, yes." Peter agreed solemnly.

It had been a nice thought, just take a nap because fuck when was the last time he'd been able to do that and when he woke up he'd realize all of this had just been brought on by ... what? A bad burger? That place had been shut down for a reason, MJ had told him as much time and time again but he'd refused to believe it, and he'd had no one but two! burgers from them and now here he was.

It was just plain rude was what it was.

"Did you talk to them?" He asked nodding toward where Steve was talking with someone who could only be Tony Stark, even if he wasn't quite right, just like everyone else seemed to be not quite right. "Any ideas from them where we are or what the next move is?"

Clint spread his fingers wide as if to say that was Peter's answer then -- they were apparently here and here to stay until someone figured out that wasn't as simple as just having a nap about it. It was a shame, absolutely, but clearly they'd both tried their hardest.

Well, not really. But they could say they had.

"A little," he said. He'd chatted Steve up anyway, a little, and Tony (who, yeah, was a little wrong - certainly a little shorter than he should have been) didn't seem to have any answers yet either. "No plans on the next move angle but they're thinking Thanos. Did you have him in your world?"

They'd put in a good effort, it had been a while since Peter had to save the world - well you know forgetting that whole business with Miles. He'd kind of hung up the mask, at least that's what he told himself, and yet here he was now finding himself for the second time in a place that he needed to figure out how to get his way out of and find his way back home.

A nap really would have been the best solution to all of this. He deserved that after everything, didn't he?

Maybe not, but he wished he did.

"Thanos? What? Now?" Peter asked surprised to hear that name again. It had been a while. "I kinda thought he'd been taken care of. Now he's out here ruining perfectly good trips home?"

Naps always felt well deserved, Clint figured. No matter when he took them -- after saving the world or after having achieved the hard task of waking up, showering and having coffee. Didn't matter which, some days. Naps were as good as it got.

But apparently they weren't like -- saving the day good. Not for everyone. Figured.

"Yeah, I dunno," Clint admitted. "We'd dealt with him what feels like forever ago. He had a crappy girlfriend and wanted to show off. It was this whole thing. Not fun. Apparently it's kinda more recent for those dudes." He thumbed over at the Not Quite Stark and Friendly Enough to Feed Everyone Rogers. He wasn't saying so because it wouldn't be very fair or nice, but this was probably somehow their fault. Well, not theirs. Just their universe. Still. "Bad timing," he decided. "Also, the toilet in the house I picked didn't flush very well, so that's gonna be a problem later."

"Yeah, I was more on the sidelines when all of that went down where I'm from, but like... that was ages ago." Peter agreed, he wasn't necessarily right there in the midst of it, but he knew enough to know that he shouldn't have to be dealing with this now.

There was a limit for things like this, wasn't there? You had to deal with a mad man once and then he was finished, it was those lower level villains that you had to deal with again and again, but Thanos - he was something else.

"Pretty sure we don't actually have plumbing here, man." Peter said frowning, he hadn't been able to find any amount of solace in the shower since they arrived, and man that was like his safe space, and here he was being deprived of it. The hits just kept on coming.

"I'd like to avoid it again? But. Who knows. I think it's a matter of figuring this place out more than him? Because I'm prettyyyy sure Thanos wasn't like Hey, fuck you guys, go live in little European style cottages!"

Yeah. Seemed pretty unlikely. So this was. What? A mistake, maybe? That seemed about right. Like the exact kind of trouble that Clint would get into.

"...No? That explains a lot, actually." He paused, awkward. "Aw. No. This is gonna be like camping, but with houses, isn't it."

"He'd be a lot more petty than I remember him being if that's what his big plan was." And well Peter couldn't imagine any version of Thanos being quite that ridiculous, no that was more the style of one of his run of the mill bad guys and well - he was pretty sure none of them had the ability to pull versions of them from many different dimensions together into one place like this all to see them trying to figure out how to live in a place like this.

Peter nodded at the assessment of their current predicament, "Yeah, that's exactly what this is gonna be like, and let me tell you a city boy like me was not built for that camp life. I need a solid diet of smog inhalation and pizza by the slice and I've got a feeling I'm not going to get any of that here."

Clint slouched somewhat and looked around them thoughtfully. Yeah. That was exactly what it was going to be like. A bunch of almost strangers trying their very hardest to live however they could while hoping someone figured out a way to get home. And complaining about not having pizza.

"Okay," he said, vaguely resigned. "When you get too homesick, you come find me and we'll burn weird garbage and inhale the flames. That'll at least take the edge off for a while."
